1Password 4 for iPhone and iPad updated with improved sync, security, search, and more

Posted: 12 Jan 2013 12:51 AM PST

1Password 4 for iPhone and iPad has received its first significant update since its release and includes many improvements for sync, security, vault and web modes, search, secure notes, and more.

Dropbox and iCloud syncing have been improved in the new 1Password 4.1 and there also also been new support for USB sync utility added. There has also been a few changes made in the Security Settings and a new Display Settings section has been added that allows users to choose from four different fonts for passwords and toggle whether you wan to conceal your passwords or show rich icons for each of your logins.

The new Vault Mode in 1Password 4 has also been improved with new gestures and navigation. Now you don't need to tap-and-hold on rows in the item detail view to display the menu (you just simply tap, instead) and on the iPad, tapping the tab icon twice will take you to the root view.

Agiles Bits have also squashed some of the bugs in Web Mode and added an option to copy the current URL. Additionally, search has been improved by always showing the search bar and on the iPad, you can search for items in portrait orientation. Attachments will now also be shown in Secure Notes.

What do you think of this update to 1Password 4? Was something you were hoping for overlooked?

TetherCell makes your AA batteries Bluetooth-ready and app-friendly

Posted: 11 Jan 2013 03:37 PM PST

Another little goodie from CES 2013 was Tethercell. This Indiegogo project wraps a connectivity layer around a AAA battery to make it AA-sized, but makes it able to communicate to your iPhone over Bluetooth 4.0. With their iOS app, you'll be able to get notifications when a battery is about to die, set schedules for activation, and remotely activate and deactivate the device. It's a pretty neat idea, and the devs are open to the possibility of providing an API for other app developers.

Tethercell is still very much in its early stages, but even just a few days into the launch of their Indiegogo campaign, they're about a quarter of the way to their goal. You can snag one for $35, or a pack of two for $63, but the developer promises that once it reaches retail, prices should be lower. It's an interesting idea overall, and combined with a system like IFTTT, you could make your various battery-powered gadgets significantly more smart. Any takers? How would you like to use a system like Tethercell?

Element Case at CES 2013 gallery: From Sector to Ronin to what's next

Posted: 11 Jan 2013 03:33 PM PST

Element Case puts the high in high-end iPhone and iPad cases and accessories. The team behind Element are hard core gear heads, with a decidedly race-driven, military operator inspired aesthetic, and that's what their designs reflect. In addition to the existing iPhone case lines like Sector and Ronin, and the Joule stand for iPad, they've got some new case designs for both iPad and iPhone heading our way, and you can see them all in Derek Kessler's photos from CES 2013.

OtterBox announces waterproof case, battery case, and their first app for iPhone

Posted: 11 Jan 2013 03:08 PM PST

At CES 2013, OtterBox announced the Armor Series for the iPhone 4, 4S and 5, their first waterproof case in a long time. It's got plenty of padding for impact protection, including plugs for headphone and dock/Lightning port, and a non-permeable film around the speakers that can let sound out without the device getting wet. Once the tough metal clamps are in place, you can submerge your iPhone over 6 feet for half an hour, drop it from 10 feet, and blast as much dust as you want at it without any worries.

The arguably more interesting product OtterBox was showing off at the show was the Defender Series with iOn Intelligence - a new variant with an integrated backup battery and a dedicated iOS application for monitoring how much juice is left in the pack and in your iPhone. In addition to have the three layers of protection we're used to, there's also a microUSB plug to keep everything charged. There's no data pass-through, so you'll still need to take your iPhone out if you ever want to sync, but for the convenience of extra power and protection, I'd say it's worth the compromise.

The only downside is that you'll be paying a steep premium of $130 for the Defender Series with iOn Intelligence. No word on release date just yet, but it should be out sometime this spring. The Armor series OtterBox for iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, and iPhone 5 will be available February 22 for $99.95 online and at AT&T stores. Any takers? You can get a closer look at the Armor series over here.

The Fitbit Flex made an appearance at CES 2013 and we were there to check it out first-hand. If you're looking for a way to integrate your iPhone into your fitness and health routine, the Fitbit flex is a perfect option. It'll not only track your steps but your distance traveled, calories burned, and more.

Once you've put on and set up the Fitbit Flex, you're good to go. It'll track all of your data and then beam it wirelessly via Bluetooth to your iPhone or Android device. Fitbit Flex also includes a built in alarm system as well.

VivoPlay watch to allow parents to track down and call their kids on iPhone

Posted: 11 Jan 2013 01:47 PM PST

A helpful accessory for parents made its debut at CES 2013 called the VivoPlay by Evado Filip. In addition to GPS and Wi-Fi location-tracking, the VivoPlay has a built-in SIM card and service which allows parents to call their kids directly or vice versa right from the device. The companion iPhone app includes live tracking information, proximity alerts so you know when the little rascal is getting too far, and a secure management system so parents can dictate who exactly can make calls to and from the VivoPlay unit. The watch will require some kind of subscription to pay for voice and data service, and of course an initial cost for the device itself, though hard numbers have yet to be nailed down. Since kids will be wearing these things, they've been built especially rugged and water resistant, so the VivoPlay can survive inevitable mishaps.

For more information, be sure to hit up Evado Filip. VivoPlay should be available by the middle of the year with pilot programs launching at the end of the quarter. Personally, I think this system looks fantastic - even the best parents can always use a bit of back-up, if only for peace of mind. Any parents tempted to get something like this? How do you keep track of your kids?

iTunes match not syncing playlists

Posted: 11 Jan 2013 01:48 PM PST

We're getting pelted by messages today from readers using iTunes Match, Apple's music locker service, who either can no longer find, or no longer sync their playlists from, to, or with iCloud. Apple's System Status isn't currently reporting any problems, which in and of itself seems problematic, given the sudden influx of complaints.

I use iTunes Match but I don't use playlists, though I'm making some now to test out. In the meantime, there's no indication turning iTunes Match off and on again fixes anything, so absent word or a fix from Apple, we'll just keep troubleshooting and see what we can find.

If you're currently having trouble finding or syncing your iTunes Match playlists, let me know in the comments below, and if it starts working again, let me know that too.

Olloclip previews mountable Photo Dock case for iPhone 5

Posted: 11 Jan 2013 01:00 PM PST

Mobile photography fans will already be familiar with Olloclip's iPhone 5 lens which provides excellent macro, wide-angle, and fisheye capbailities. At CES 2013, they began showing off a new case to go along with it called the Photo Dock. It offers a flip-up section which doubles as an access point for an Olloclip as well as a more prominent shutter button. Along the bottom of the case is a removable section that has tripod mounts in both vertical and horizontal orientations, as well as a shoe mount if you want to get fancy with LED lighting or an external microphone.

I'm really digging how this case stands to offer a lot of functionality and a moderate amount of protection without getting too unwieldly. The only other real competitor in the integrated photography space is Diff, but being able to pare everything down to a slim, simple case may give Olloclip the edge. Expect the Photo Dock case to become available by the end of this quarter for around $50. Any takers?

Armortech drops hammers on iPhones at CES 2013

Posted: 11 Jan 2013 12:39 PM PST

Armortech is here at CES 2013 demonstrating their new screen protection technology. To us, that means lots of cool demonstrations including hitting iPhones with hammers and shooting at them. If you are the type that tends to have mishaps with your iPhone, Armortech might be worth checking out.

Armortech isn't available just yet but will be in the first quarter of this year. Depending on what product you choose, price will range from $39 to $69 for complete coverage. If you aren't a fan of wet application, you'll also be glad to know that Armortech products are dry applications.

Anyone think this will actually save your iPhone from drops?

iPad Education Apps: Leo’s Pad 2

Leo's Pad 2 is a great looking educational app for the iPad aimed at pre-schoolers and early learners. Reading things like this about [...]

Delta Air Lines adds iPad app, updates iPhone app with redesign, Passbook support

Posted: 11 Jan 2013 07:01 AM PST

FlyDelta app Delta Air Lines today finally released a proper iPad application and its iPhone app to Version 2.0, bringing with it a much-needed redesign and, perhaps most important -- the ability to use Passbook for boarding passes. The iPad version of the app also gets a particularly cool "Glass-bottom jet" feature that shows information about what's under your plane as you fly overhead.

You're also able to purchase Economy Comfort seats and trip extras (such as Wifi and priority boarding) straight from the app, and managing your Sky Miles account is much easier now. That said, while the application itself is much easier on the eyes, it's also pretty quick to dump you back into a browser view for some features -- the difference is readily noticeable. But we're not going to turn our nose up at this update at all. Check out the iPad demo video below.
