CES day minus one: Unveiled

Posted: 07 Jan 2013 01:10 AM PST

The CES 2013 show floor doesn't open until Tuesday but Sunday saw CES Unveiled. There was an incredibly diverse range of product, which is great, but unfortunately that also means there wasn't too much iOS specific. Still, iMore was on hand to take a look. Tomorrow brings Mobile Focus, so hopefully there'll be more iPhone and iPad goodness around the corner.

Mint.com Personal Finance

Money, you love and hate it, and this is the year you're going to get your finances on track and learn to better budget your spending. Mint.com Personal Finance is an excellent app to help you reach your goal. Available on the iPhone, iPad, and web, Mint.com allows you to track, budget, and manage your money from anywhere. Simply add your bank, credit, loan, and retirement accounts and Mint will categorize your transactions, produce graphical representations of your spending, send you reminders when bills are due, and more.

BillMinder

Another great app to help you with your finances is BillMinder for iPad. Paying bills is one of the most annoying aspects of every adult's life and it's all to easy to forget to make a payment resulting in late fees and bad credit scores. With BillMinder, you'll never miss a bill payment again! It brings all your bills into one manageable place so that you can glance at which ones need your attention and track your expenses with detail charts and graphs. You can also grab the iPhone version for you and your spouse that you're both reminded about when bills are due and all the information will stay in sync.

Things

If there's one thing that almost everyone could learn to get better at, it's organization. Things for iPhone, iPad, and Mac is an easy to use task manager that will take your life by the reins and help you manage your tasks and lists. With things, you can stay organized with separate task lists for work, family, your hobby, an upcoming vacation, or whatever you wish, by creating Projects and Areas of Responsibility. You can also focus on what's needs to get done today, what's coming up next, and even move tasks to be done "Someday" for the not-so-important tasks you want to eventually get to. And if you get all three versions of Things for iPhone, iPad, and Mac, everything will be seamlessly kept in sync with Things Cloud.

Now, I'm not going to lie, the trio of Things apps for iPhone, iPad, and Mac do add up to be a little pricey, but if you want to get serious about organizing your life, it might be a good idea to consider picking them up. Cultured Code does offer a free trial for the Mac version, so go grab it and see if Things is right for you.

Evernote

Evernote has been a favorite of organizers and note-takers for ages. With Evernote, you can take notes, save photos, create to-do lists, record voice reminders, and make them all completely searchable and accessible from any device. Many other apps and products also integrate Evernote so that you can easily share data and information from other places into Evernote. Evernote is accessible from just about any mobile device, including the iPhone and iPad, and the web.

30/30

If managing your time more efficiently is a goal of yours for 2013, 30/30 is an excellent time manager for your iPad (and iPhone). You simply set up a list of tasks and a length of time for each of them. When you start the time, 30/30 will tell you when to move on to the next task. This is especially awesome if you're self-employed.

Day One - Journal

Day One is a journalling app for the iPhone, iPad, and Mac that will help you save your memories, ideas, events, and photos, and keep them synced using iCloud or Dropbox. Long are the days of keeping handwritten journals that can be lost, stolen, or destroyed -- with Day One, your journal is safe in the cloud, easily searchable and sharable, and very beautiful.

We admit that this is just a small list of all the amazing apps out there that can assist with keeping your goals this year, so please let us know what we missed and what you're using on your iPad to ring in the new year. What are your resolutions for 2013?

Use your iPhone as a proximity sensor to lock your Mac when you step away from your desk with Keycard for Mac

Posted: 06 Jan 2013 07:20 PM PST

Keycard is a new Mac app that pairs to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with Bluetooth, and when it detects that you've stepped away from your Mac (assuming you have your device with you), it locks your Mac. Once you return, or enter in the 4 digit code, your Mac unlocks.

To use Keycard, simply make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your iPhone or iPad, confirm it's connected to Keycard on your Mac, and enter in a four digit password. Keycard also includes options to open at startup and hide from your dock.

The four digit password may seem like an odd feature of the app, since it's all about your proximity to your computer, but this feature is actually very important. Suppose your iPhone's battery dies when you're away from your desk or even worse, it gets stolen. Without the 4 digit pin, you would be locked out of your Mac until you got your iPhone back.

I've tested out Keycard at home and it works great. I love how it unlocks before you're actually at your desk because it doesn't slow you down at all and disrupt your workflow. However, it would be nice to adjust what distance you need to be from your Mac in order for it to lock and unlock as some people may want to shrink that distance to only a few feet.

If you've been known to have your social networks "hacked" by your friends when you step away from your computer, you may not want to pass this one up.

How to delete an email account from your iPhone and iPad

There's lots of reasons you may choose to delete an email account from your iPhone or iPad. Perhaps you got a new email address, or just don't use one of your email accounts that much anymore. Whatever the reason may be, iOS makes it just as easy to remove an email account as it was to add it in the first place.

Haven't had to delete an email account before and not sure how? Follow along and we'll show you.

  1. Launch the Settings app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
  3. You'll see a list of the accounts you currently have set up on your iPhone or iPad. Tap on the one you want to delete.
  4. Scroll all the way down and tap on the red Delete Account button.
  5. Your iPhone or iPad will ask you to confirm that you want to delete the account. Once again, tap on the red Delete Account button.
  6. That's all there is to it. That email account will be removed from your iPhone or iPad. Just repeat this process on any iPhone or iPad you don't want that specific email linked to anymore.

This weekend's iPad wallpaper choices are two misty, peaceful background images. The first one, shown above, is titled Blue Fog, by datamakarna. I think it's a hugely powerful image and its colors are perfect for the iPad home screen. I spotted it in the excellent Backdrops Retina Wallpaper app. Hit the break for one more [...]

Editor's desk: CES 2013

Posted: 06 Jan 2013 04:00 AM PST

I'm sitting at Montreal's Trudeau (formerly Dorval) Airport at Air Canada gate C74 waiting for my flight to Las Vegas. It's the new year, and that means it's time for the Consumer Electronic Show (CES), one of the largest, most insane trade shows in North America. I'll be there along with our how-to editor, Ally Kazmucha, and our Mobile Nations cohorts, Kevin Michaluk and Remik Szul of CrackBerry, Daniel Rubino of Windows Phone, Derek Kessler of webOS Nation, and Phil Nickinson, Alex Dobie, Anndrew Vacca, and Andrew Martonik of Android Central. We'll also have Simon Sage, our games editor, Ashley Esqueda of the Monday Brief, James Falconer, our community manager, our good friend Mickey Papillon of The Cell Phone Junkie, Chris Kingree and Joel Martin from our accessories stores, and Marcus Adolfsson and Andrew Carton, our publishers along for the ride.

Yeah, we're rolling smart deep.

Apple, of course, doesn't do CES, and nor does Google, the company formerly known as Palm, or even Microsoft anymore. I' not sure if RIM will even have a formal presence. Like most years, the big news for iOS will be accessories and peripherals, and Ally, Simon, Ashley and I'll check out as many as we can for you. With Macworld|iWorld less than a month away, however, it'll strictly be the highlights for us at CES.

You can check out the podcast up top for a preview of what we're expecting (and not expecting) at the show (sorry again for the video quality, we had a major technical failure during the show!). And if you want to catch all the behind-the-scenses shenanigans of Mobile Nations gone wild, your best bet is to follow us all on Twitter.

Break in at Microsoft’s research office sees only iPads stolen

Posted: 06 Jan 2013 01:13 AM PST

Break in at Microsoft's research office sees only iPads stolenAccording to a report in a Palo Alto newspaper, a break in took place at Microsoft's office in Mountain View and the only things that were taken from the property were iPads. The Break in supposedly happened over the Christmas period at one of Microsoft's research offices and the thief got away with two iPad 2 models, two iPad third generation models and one of the latest iPad 4th generation models. Apparently no Microsoft products were stolen in the burglary.

Police Sgt Sean Thompson said there are no suspects and no sign of forced entry. The iPads were taken from three offices in Microsoft Building 5 on the campus at 1075 La Avenida Street, according to Thompson, the theft was reported on Wednesday.

Thompson said, all employees have access to the building through their electronic key cards. The company told police it was closed for two days on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Thompson said he assumes Microsoft has some sort of video surveillance and will be reviewing who entered and exited the building during the time frame of the theft. So far police do not have any suspect information.

Now before you to start to laugh, there could be a really simple explanation for all this. Maybe the offices didn't have any Microsoft Surface's or Laptops lying around. Maybe the only things available in those particular offices were Apple's products. Ok, it's a long shot I agree, go on, laugh if you want!
