Triage for iPhone review: Quickly curate your email inbox

Triage for iPhone review: Quickly curate your email inbox

Triage: Email First Aid is an email client for iPhone by Southgate Labs that makes it easy to to quickly sort through your inbox and remove the noise. Triage is not intended to be a complete client, but rather a simple one with the sole purpose of helping you to quickly curate your inbox in your downtime.

The idea is simple: Triage displays your messages as a stack of cards. Each card shows who the message is from, the subject line, and up to 10 lines from the email. If you swipe the card up, Triage will archive the message, and if you swipe down, it will be marked as unread and remain in your inbox, but never again appear in Triage. Tapping the card will display its full contents.

Although the main purpose of Triage is to either accept or reject emails from your inbox, you can also reply to messages. Unfortunately, it does not offers support for signatures. I understand that Triage is meant to be simple, but if I'm going to be responding to messages, I at least want a signature.

The good

  • Support for Gmail, Yahoo!, iCloud, and most IMAP
  • Messages displayed as a stack of cards with no indication of how many there are
  • Flick message up to archive or flip down to keep
  • Support for replying to messages

The bad

  • No signature support
  • No unified inbox

The bottom line

It's a constant battle for me to stay on top of my inbox and Triage is helping me better manage my seemingly continuous flow of messages. Seeing just a small excerpt of just one email at a time makes my inbox seem less daunting and it's easy to quickly make a decision on whether to keep a message for later or to send it straight to the archives. When I have time, I get to sit down and address a much smaller, less stressful inbox.

Triage for iPhone is a great little email client for people who get tons of email. It's simple, clean, fast, and one of my new favorite apps.

Facebook wants to set up Home - or something - on iOS.

Posted: 15 Apr 2013 05:48 PM PDT

Facebook wants to get Facebook Home on iOS. This should come as absolutely no surprise to anyone familiar with Facebook, their business model, the realities of the smartphone market, and global plans for world domination by anyone, anywhere. Specifically in this case, however, it's Facebook's product director, Adam Mosseri, who's talking it up. According to Bloomberg:

"We've shown them what we've built and we're just in an ongoing conversation," Mosseri said, referring to discussions with Apple and Microsoft.

"It may or may not be Home," he said. "We could also just bring some of the design values to the iOS app. That might be how it ends up. Or we could build just the lock screen. Maybe then it's not called Home, it's called something else."

Anyone who thinks Apple will surrender control of any of the Lock screen or Home screen experience to Facebook or anyone else is nuts. I've already written and said a ton about why I think Facebook Home is nicely done but wrongly focused, and if anything it's different not better -- solving some problems by creating some different ones.

Facebook could make a better iOS app. If Apple ever opens up inter-app communications and actionable notification, perhaps they could even build a Facebook island with ChatHeads-like functionality throughout it within whatever very specific, very limited frameworks.

But Facebook Home on iOS? I'll expect it only when, and if, I ever see it.

"There are no ads on [Facebook Home] yet," [Mark] Zuckerberg said. "I'm sure at some point there will be."

YouTube for iOS update with support for live events

YouTube for iPhone and iPad has been updated with a new features and enhancements, including support for live events. Events like Coachella have often been streamed live on YouTube in the past, but users could not view them on iOS devices. iOS users can now view live events through the app, and YouTube has added a feed called "Live" to the "From YouTube" section of the guide which lists the live events that are currently available.

Additionally, users can now quickly access just the new videos from their subscriptions through the "My subscriptions" section in the channel guide. Additionally, channels that use the "One Channel" branding on YouTube will now have a specialized header for their feed in the iPhone and iPad app. People using the "Send to TV" feature can now queue videos in a playlist. Finally, the update also has the usual performance enhancements and bug fixes.

What do you think of the update? Are you excited to be able to watch live streams on your iPhone and iPad?

Wonderful Saigon Electrics of Binh Duong hopefully not providing 12mp cameras for iPhone 5S

Wonderful Saigon Electrics of Binh Duong rumored to be providing 12mp cameras for iPhone 5S

Apple is rumored to be sourcing 12mp camera parts from Wonderful Saigon Electrics of Binh Duong -- love that name -- for use with the next generation iPhone 5S. That's according to Tinte.vn (translated by Google):

X has revealed to me that Apple's next generation iPhone will have a camera 12MP resolution, together with many new features such as camera HDR and night photography better. Be able to take pictures in low-light conditions of the new iPhone is not pulling with Nokia PureView, but popular iPhone camera interface is simple and fast, so the user will not be disappointed with the upgrade This small level.

Tinte has had access to prototype and pre-release iOS hardware in the past, though there doesn't appear to be any hardware in any hands at this point, so it shouldn't be considered anything more than a rumor.

I've only heard that there'll be a "better camera", not that there'd be a higher megapixel camera. Personally, I hope that's the case. Apple doesn't chase the megapixels this time around. The iPhone 5 megapixel count is fine. What we need next are things like sensors with bigger microns, and optical stabilization, and anything that helps take in more photons so we get better images in a wider variety of conditions, from low light to high motion.

We don't need to print posters from our poor quality mobile photos. We need to have our eyes amazed and delighted by all the incredible moments we can "just capture".

To date, Apple has had the right focus on their optics. In an age of Nokia Lumia 920 and HTC One shooters, does anyone really think we need another megapixel war?

Mailbox for iPhone updated with smarter snooze options, faster swiping options, and more

Mailbox for iPhone updated with smarter snooze options, faster swiping options, and more

Mailbox for iPhone just received an update that adds smarter snooze controls, faster swiping, and general UI improvements throughout Mailbox that should make the interface more fluid.

Smarter snooze controls within Mailbox are now available via the Settings panel of the app and allow you to adjust time and date settings for alarms tailored to your day. You can set when you wake up, when your day ends, and how much later you really want a later item to go off.

The update also includes the ability to swipe faster and as many items as you'd like at the same time. If you were experiencing a bug when using the swipe to open feature, that should also be taken care of in this update as well. If you've already installed the update, have you noticed anything else new?

Dwellable for iPhone and iPad review: find rentals at all the top vacation spots in the US

Dwellable for iPhone and iPad review: find rentals at all the top vacation spots in the US

Dwellable for iPhone and iPad is a vacation rental app that aggregates rentals from several different sources and companies to give you a comprehensive list of what's available at many popular vacation destinations. The usual suspects are included such as Hawaii and Florida as well as many more.

If you're looking to book a vacation and hotels just aren't your thing, Dwellable for iPhone and iPad may be able to help.

Once you've downloaded Dwellable to your iPhone or iPad, launching it will take you to the Where are you going? screen that allows you to choose from different vacation spots. These include places such as several areas in Hawaii, Disney/Orlando, Cape Cod, Lake Tahoe, Palm Springs, San Diego, Vail, and more. After you've selected an area you can normally narrow them down by more specific locations if you'd like or choose to view all rentals together.

The general search result screen will show you one photo, the title of the rental, how many bedrooms and baths, and what rental company or resort it belongs to if applicable. Dwellable also allows you to favorite rentals by adding a star next to the listing for easy access later. Tapping into a vacation listing will give you even more information including contact information for booking, a full feature listing, and in most cases, lots of photos to browse through.

After you are within search results in Dwellable, you'll notice that you will now see a bottom navigation menu that includes a few different views. The list view is the default view and shows the names of properties and a brief description of each. The next option is photos which gives you one large picture with information overlaid. You can then swipe left and right through search results and tap into any that interest you. Map view does exactly what you would expect it to do and gives you a map view of where each property is located.

The date board is an especially cool feature and allows you to view when properties are available. You can filter and set date ranges accordingly. This is nice if you know exactly when you'd like to travel but don't want to get your heart set on a property that may or may not be available for that specified time frame.

The good

  • Gorgeous interface with tons of high quality imagery
  • A large amount of rentals for all areas supported
  • The date board feature makes it easy to see what properties are available at a quick glance

The bad

  • Not an actual booking system so you'll need to do that by calling the property owner
  • The app seems dependent on owners updating their booking information and blocked out dates on their own, this could cause inaccuracies in availability if owners don't do this regularly

The bottom line

For anyone who plans on traveling to any of the supported vacation destinations and doesn't fancy staying in hotels, Dwellable for iPhone and iPad is a great way to find rentals you may have not even known about otherwise. Everything from the imagery to the features lists make it easy to browse properties and narrow down options.

Before booking your next trip through one of the typical travel websites, I'd highly recommend checking out Dwellable and you may be surprised at what you find.

How to disable access to certain areas of the screen with Guided Access for iPhone and iPad

How to disable access to certain areas of the screen with Guided Access for iPhone and iPad

If you've got an iPhone or iPad running iOS 6 or higher, you've got Guided Access. This feature is especially great to use with small children that you don't want to have access to certain apps. Once you've launched them into the app they are allowed to be in, you can take it one step further by disabling touch for certain areas of the screen you may not want them having access to.

Follow along and we'll show you how.

  1. Open the app you do want them to be able to access.
  2. Triple tap the Home button to launch Guided Access. If nothing happens, make sure you have Guided Access enabled within Settings first.
  3. You can now circle areas on the screen that you don't want them to have access to. Once you've circled areas you can use the anchors in the corners of each box to refine exactly where you don't want them to be able to tap.
  4. Now tap the Start button in the upper right hand corner to enter Guided Access mode.

That's all there is to it. Whoever is using the iPhone or iPad will not be able to exit that app or tap on the areas of the screen that you've specified during setup.

DISH Network makes bid to buy Sprint out from under SoftBank

DISH Network makes bid to buy Sprint out from under SoftBank

DISH Network has launched a $25.5 billion bid to merge with Sprint. Although Japanese carrier SoftBank is currently preparing to purchase Sprint, shareholders for the third-place U.S. carrier would have the opportunity to reject that bid in favor of DISH Network's. DISH Chairman Charles Ergen says that this deal hopes to create a first-of-its-kind nation-wide integrated bundle of home and mobile broadband services:

A transformative DISH/Sprint merger will create the only company that can offer customers a convenient, fully-integrated, nationwide bundle of in- and out-of-home video, broadband and voice services. Additionally, the combined national footprints and scale will allow DISH/Sprint to bring improved broadband services to millions of homes with inferior or no access to competitive broadband services.

DISH is confident that it can raise the money necessary to make this deal. If their bid is successful, they will need to pay fee for derailing the SoftBank purchase. DISH also expects that a merger with Sprint will result in growth opportunities of $37 billion, with $11 billion in cost-saving measures. DISH been looking to expand into wireless broadband recently, securing permission from the FCC in December to build its own LTE network. If they are successful in purchasing Sprint, they'll no longer need to build out their own network, instead moving resources to aid in the expansion of Sprint's LTE, which currently offers coverage to a smaller number of customers than Verizon and AT&T. Sprint's shareholders will make the decision on the proposal in the coming months.

Candy Crush Saga: It's Bejeweled for ruining your life

Candy Crush Saga: It's bejeweled for ruining your life

Candy Crush Saga is a match-three game for iPhone and iPad that is rapidly growing in popularity. It is extremely addicting and great fun, but potentially very expensive.

The actual gameplay is almost identical to Bejeweled (swap pairs of fruit to match three or more of the same fruit), but different levels have different goals like getting all the fruit to the bottom of the board and clearing away jelly. There are also traditional goals like reaching a certain score in a given amount of time. Just like most match-three games, Candy Crush is very addicting and will easily suck away hours of your life at a time… for a price.

For most of the goals in Candy Crush, you are given a specific number of moves to complete them. If you are unsuccessful, you are given an option to buy more moves or start over. There are also options to buy boosters at the start of each level. These boosts will increase your chances at beating the level. From the "Yeti Shop" you can also buy charms that permanently give you boosts for $16.99, $39.99, and $24.99.

There are also lives in Candy Crush. But you don't know this until you run out of them for the first time. And when you do, you are presented with a lovely message informing you that you can either pay to keep playing, spam your Facebook friends for help, or wait up to 30 minutes to continue.

When I learned of Candy Crush and made the decision to start playing, I made it my personal goal to not spend a dime on the game. I've succeeded, but now I've reached my first required paywall. After passing the 35th level, you are required to either spam your Facebook friends (which I refuse to do), or pay $0.99 for more levels. Considering the game is free to download and a lot of fun, I'm more than happy to pay the buck for more levels.

What about you? Do you play Candy Crush? Have you dropped any cash on it yet? What level are you on?

The Spideo Instant Movie Discovery iPad app was updated towards the end of last week, to Version 1.2.

The update is all about the addition of Netflix:

You can now discover and watch Netflix movies and TV shows instantly with Spideo.

I featured Spideo as our pick for Best Free iPad App of the Week recently and I like the app a lot. It offers a unique way of discovering movies and a nicely curated selection. It's good to see Netflix support added.

Led Zeppelin Sound and Fury iBook

Led Zeppelin: Sound and Fury is a new iBook that should prove to be a big hit with Led Zepp fans and rock fans in general. Here's a little of its App Store introduction:

Led Zeppelin: Sound and Fury by Neal Preston is an in-depth, illustrated digital coffee-table book created and designed especially for iBooks. It provides an unprecedented and comprehensive glimpse into the world of Led Zeppelin through the lens of famed photographer Neal Preston. Blending images, interviews, and information to allow readers inside access into some of the greatest moments in rock history …

Preston had unparalleled access to Led Zeppelin and the photos and multimedia elements in this book are spectacular proof of that.

I love the fact that Preston's introduction begins with a line with just one word: Swagger. That's one of the big themes in the book – the sheer swagger and supreme...

iPad at Work: London Powered by the iPad

iPads in London

London's Evening Standard ran a recent article focused on how the iPad is 'powering London'.

From barmen to doctors, Apple's tablet is being used as a working tool rather than just another tech vice.

The article runs down how the iPad is being put to work in all sorts of areas in London, from the music and fashion industries to education and medicine. It details how London restaurants and bars are using the iPad for a variety of purposes – from serving up the wine list to assisting with childcare.

It notes that 31% of doctors in the UK now own an iPad, and quotes the IT director at The Great Ormond Steet childrens' hospital:

"They can make a real difference," says Mark Large, IT director at the hospital. "If an urgent case conference is called to discuss treatment for a sick child, clinicians can join it no matter where they are and access information."

Foxconn reportedly ramping up for iPhone 5S production

Foxconn reportedly ramping up for iPhone 5S production

iMore previously learned that Apple was targeting an August time frame for the next-generation iPhone 5S, and while that may or may not include more recently rumored software scheduling issues, it does sound like the general time frame is still accurate enough for Foxconn to start ramping up for production. Lorraine Luk of the Wall Street Journal writes:

[Foxconn] said Monday it has added about 10,000 assembly-line workers per week in Zhengzhou, its major production facility for iPhones, since the last week of March.

"We have been very busy recently as we will start mass-producing the new iPhone soon," said a Zhengzhou-based executive who has direct knowledge of production plans.

If Apple sticks to its 2009 and 2011 pattern of keeping the same casing two years in a row and releasing an S-class update, then presumably it'll be an easier ramp up than last year where the manufacturing technology needed to produce the insanely redesigned iPhone 5 led to the usual transitional hiccups and supply constraints.

If that's the case, then software and services, namely iOS 7, and iCloud could be the major factors in determining the final release window for Apple next iPhone.

To date, every new iPhone has shipped with a new version of iOS, and the iPhone 4S shipped with iCloud. That coupling makes for greater product impact, but also greater dependency.

Hopefully, if hardware is ramping up, that's a sign everything else is also starting to line back up.
