Pebble E-Paper watch to start shipping later this month

Posted: 10 Jan 2013 12:35 AM PST

Pebble E-Paper watch to start shipping later this monthThe Pebble E-Paper watch will start shipping on January 23 for those that were part of its phenomenal Kickstarter success. Pebble made the announcement at its CES 2013 press event where it also confirmed that the Pebble would have a magnetic charging port, magnetometer and ambient light sensors. In case you forgot, the Pebble E-Paper watch will connect to your iPhone (or Android Phone) over Bluetooth and runs apps that let you use GPS, control music and media playback, read notifications and see who is calling you.

Without any further ado, the moment you have all been waiting for has arrived – we're thrilled to announce that we'll begin shipping Pebble on January 23rd. We've been working very hard for the past year to deliver something that we're truly proud of...and we know that we would not have been able to do it without the support of our Backers. So thank you!

We're planning to continue our aggressive update cycle and ship new software updates every 2-3 weeks. Notably missing from our launch release is support for Runkeeper. We're working closely with RK and estimate that it should be enabled by the beginning of March. Sorry about that!

You can see the complete press event video below; but be warned, if you didn't take part in the original Kickstarter campaign then you are going to be really upset seeing the watch in action. It looks totally awesome and will certainly up your geek profile should you manage to get one.

Apple removes anytime screenshot updates to combat scam apps

Posted: 09 Jan 2013 08:54 PM PST

Time was you could create any simple app you wanted, get it approved, then sneak back in and change the screenshots displayed in the App Store to make it look like your scam app was Minecraft or Pokemon or any damn thing you pleased. That time's over. Apple today announced that when an app is approved with a certain set of screenshots, it stays with those screenshots unless and until a developer submits an update for approval.

Beginning January 9, app screenshots will be locked in iTunes Connect once your app has been approved. New screenshots may be uploaded when you submit a binary for an update to an existing app or a new app. For more information on capturing and using screenshots, read the Xcode User Guide.

Of course, this is a huge loss of convenience for legitimate developers who might have wanted to update screenshots to better showcase a certain feature, or explain what their app does. So once again, the abuse of the unethical results in a restriction for everyone. Well done, jackasses.

For customers, it's pure win. No more bait and switch. Assuming due diligence by Apple's reviewers, from now on, what's on the box has to match what's in the box.

At least until the next scam mechanism becomes popular...

How to disable an email account on your iPhone and iPad

How to disable an email account on your iPhone and iPad

If there's ever a time you are lucky enough to not have to check all your emails, perhaps over a family vacation, your iPhone and iPad gives you an easy way to temporarily disable them without actually having to remove them completely. This makes for a great way to selectively choose what emails you want to receive without having to tweak all of your notification settings.

This is how.

  1. Launch the Settings app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
  3. Tap on the name of the account you'd like to temporarily disable.
  4. Tick the Mail option to the Off position.

That's it. The mailbox you just disabled will no longer show up in your Inbox but it's still set up on your iPhone or iPad and ready to be re-enabled whenever you'd like.

Tweetdeck for Mac brings 90+ fixes and updates

Posted: 09 Jan 2013 10:57 AM PST

Twitter has released Tweetdeck for Mac 2.3.1 which brings "90+ fixes and updates" to the popular Mac Twitter client. Some of these changes include a performance upgrade for displaying multiple high-velocity columns, the ability to embed a tweet from the tweet itself (great for bloggers), a new search box with Typeahead and People Search, and the ability to reduce the app window to 2 columns.

I'll admit to never really being a big fan of Tweetdeck, but I'm going to give it another try. It seems like a great, free alternative to Tweetbot for Mac, the Twitter app that I currently use on my Mac.

What do you think of the new changes made to Tweetdeck for Mac? What are some of your favorite features of Tweetdeck for Mac?

Russian university unveils Steve Jobs memorial

Russian university unveils Steve Jobs memorial

A Russian university has installed a memorial to Steve Jobs. Standing in the courtyard of the St. Petersburg National Research University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics, the monument takes the shape of a large-scale iPhone. A large screen in front displays a photo and video presentation of Jobs' life and career. The back of the monument features a QR code which, when scanned, directs people to a memorial website.

The monument is called "Sunny QR code", and is the work of St. Petersburg native Gleb Tarasov. A competition was held last year to create the memorial, with Tarasov's design being selected from over other 200 submissions. A small but pleasant tribute, the monument will serve as a constant reminder of a man whose work meant so much to so many, and who continue to touch our lives for many years to come.

Mobile Nations 2013 CES Experience Day 3: CES + BlackBerry CEO = 1 Amazing Day!

Posted: 09 Jan 2013 10:52 AM PST

The Mobile Nations 2013 CES Experience

After a night of good times, good friends and a few (maybe more) good drinks, today was the BIG day… CES baby! Our crew was raring to get down to the Las Vegas Convention Center, and even though a few had later starts than others… all made it down to the LVCC to check out the goodness (and craziness) that is CES.

The LVCC
Heading into the LVCC

Of course, once our passes were in-hand, the first stop was a private tour of the @NVIDIA booth...

From there, the team 'fanned out' across the show floor...

Later on in the evening, we got together one last time with the Mobile Nations team for some food and drink at the Palazzo… and the icing on the cake was a visit from a certain CEO… you may have heard of him...

Thorsten Heins joined us!
RIM CEO Thorsten Heins (far right) paid us a visit!

With all the amazing experiences now behind us, it's sadly time to wrap things up. I'd like to personally thank Robert, Michael, TJ, Marques, Rich and Martin (and Tegra Champ Kevin O'Quinn) for coming out and for being such solid dudes. It was really something to see the passion and love you have for mobile technology. Your opinions, beliefs and ideas were all extremely well informed and thought provoking to say the very least. I sincerely hope you share your experiences with the rest of the Mobile Nations communities by leaving comments, starting new threads, and interacting with other members … and be sure to let everyone know how EASY it was to win… and how FUN this experience was!

Of course, I'd be remiss if I didn't also give thanks to our pals @NVIDIA… with a super special thanks to @WillPark for being our go-to man during the experience. He went above and beyond, and I think it's fair to say he deserves a *tip of the cap* and a firm handshake for a job well done.

I now declare the Mobile Nations 2013 CES Experience… CLOSED!

Griffin draws at a distance with Crayola Light Marker for iPad

Posted: 09 Jan 2013 10:26 AM PST

iPads are great for kids -- intuitive, interactive, and engaging -- and Griffin continues to expand the possibilities, and the fun, with peripherals like the Crayola Light Marker. With a large crayon stylus that's easy to grip and easy to use, you pair with Griffin's free app and then paint and play to your heart's content with a variety of modes and tools.

It's meant to use in the dark and at a distance, almost like a pointer driven light show. The crayon sends light to your iPad camera, and the camera interprets that and makes it into magic. Check out their CES 2013, and if you have kids, or just like drawing in the dark, let me know what you think.

Dropping steel balls on Gorilla Glass 3

Posted: 09 Jan 2013 10:34 AM PST

When it comes to chemically-hardened glass, we smartphone types are definitely fans. When it comes to making our glass-fronted smartphones more durable, Corning has always been at the forefront, and their latest revelation in the form of Gorilla Glass 3 will prove to be even more of a protective force between our LCDs and the harsh world we live in.

We dropped in on Corning to check out their new Gorilla Glass 3, and in their demonstrations it lived up to the pre-show announcement hype. Gorilla Glass 3 is tougher in all forms when compared to its competition and even its predecessor in the form of Gorilla Glass 2. It can withstand greater impact force, is harder to scratch, and can stand up to forces that are capable of denting equally-thick steel. It's tough stuff, folks.

Now, Apple has admitted to using Gorilla Glass in the iPhone, but as always, they never mention specifics. If we get an iPhone 5S sometime this year, what are the odds it'll be fronted by Gorilla Glass 3?

Update: New and better video!

Ten One Design shows off the Pogo Connect Bluetooth 4.0 pressure-sensitive stylus

Posted: 09 Jan 2013 10:08 AM PST

Ten One Design released their Pogo Connect Bluetooth 4.0 pressure sensitive stylus before CES 2013 -- and we have a full review on the way -- but they still showed up to show it off at the show. (Isn't English fun?)

Thanks to BT 4.0's low energy requirement and fast connection ability, the Pogo Connect gets found and setup by apps that support it nearly instantly, and a single battery can power it through weeks and weeks of stylus fun.

So, rather than build in a digitizer like Samsung did with the Galaxy Note series or Wacom does with their device, Apple has left the iPhone minimal for those who don't need more, and let smart people make smart accessories for those that do. Pressure sensitivity gets offloaded from the tablet to the stylus.

As an artist, and someone who used Wacom for a long time in the design world, I'm all over this. Anyone else?

Verizon sold 9.8 million smartphones in Q4 2012, including higher mix of iPhones

Verizon sold 9.8 million smartphones in Q4 2012, including higher mix of iPhones

AT&T teased their Q4 2012 smartphone activation numbers yesterday, and now, in an 8-K SEC filing, Verizon has done the same, reporting 9.8 million activations, including a higher mix of iPhones.

We should get more precise numbers when Verizon releases their full results. Last year, Verizon reported 4.2 million iPhone activation, accounting for roughly 55% of all their smartphone activations. With the iPhone 5 launch during the quarter, and the higher mix of iPhones Verizon is reporting, the obvious question becomes -- how much higher was the iPhone mix this quarter?

NPD Forecast Says Tablet Market Will Overtake Notebook PCs This Year

Posted: 09 Jan 2013 08:45 AM PST

Well here's some good news for Apple and other leading tablet vendors, and some bad news for Steve Ballmer and everyone else who's still in denial about the Post-PC era. As Apple Insider reports, a new NPD DisplaySearch report forecasts that shipments of tablets in 2013 will far outstrip shipments of notebook PCs. And that [...]

Griffin MicConnect lets your XLR microphone make sweet music on your iPhone or iPad

Posted: 09 Jan 2013 08:09 AM PST

Let's say you have an amazing XLR mic on your big, beefy studio or home recording rig, but you also have an iPad or iPhone and you really want to get that same XLR quality on your way more mobile recording rig, what do you do? Griffin's answer, shown off at CES 2013, is the XLR MicConnect.

The MicConnect supplies phantom power, thanks to AA batteries, and connects via the 3.5mm headphone jack on your iPad or iPad.

I really like the idea of these kinds of accessories, and being able to get the quality on the go that I'm used to at home. If you use an XLR mic, let me know if you're also interested in trying this out.
