Eyes on with the Loewe AirSpeaker, premium Airplay speaker with a premium price to match

Posted: 22 Apr 2013 05:29 PM PDT

Loewe AirSpeaker ID

The Loewe AirSpeaker has been on the market for a little while now, but at the recent IFA Global Press Conference in Sardinia, the German manufacturer was on hand to show it off. Airplay compatible speakers aren't uncommon, but Loewe is a premium brand in the world of home electronics, and the AirSpeaker is no exception.

As you might expect from a premium product, good design is at the forefront. The AirSpeaker is supposed to look good in the home, as well as provide killer sound. There's no docking solution either, as the name implies, the AirSpeaker relies solely on Airplay. There's actually very little in the way of anything at all on the exterior. The rear of the unit houses the only 4 buttons along side the power cable which sits at the bottom, slightly recessed. Otherwise, it's all speaker.

Sadly, it wasn't possible on the show floor to get a good demonstration of the sound quality, so it remains an eyes on only. As a premium product, it also comes with a premium price. In the UK one of these will set you back a pretty hefty £499.99. That's a lot, whichever way you look at it, but then the AirSpeaker is a high end product.

The AirSpeaker wasn't the only thing at the event of note from Loewe, though. During their press briefing they teased a forthcoming portable speaker system -- the Loewe Speaker 2go -- that will have Airplay as one of its streaming options. A release timeframe wasn't provided, but since the event was linked to the annual IFA show in Berlin, it's not unreasonable to think we might see it there in September.

Loewe 2Go

It's a lot of money to spend on a speaker, but these sit nicely at the high end of the market alongside the offerings from Bowers & Wilkins. So, anyone interested by either of these? Be sure to share your thoughts with us in the comments below.

Netflix for iOS updated with new subtitle and episode selector

Posted: 22 Apr 2013 02:26 PM PDT

Netflix

The Netflix app for iOS was recently updated to 4.0, which includes a few new features - namely, a brand new episode selector for iPad, and a redesigned audio and subtitle selector for both iPad and iPhone.

The last big update we saw for Netflix was last fall, for their Just For Kids section. These additions aren't insanely groundbreaking, but they're better than a kick in the teeth. Plus, hey, bug fixes are always good.

As a side-note, Netflix announced their quarterly results today, which included a $1 billion in revenue and are on track to hit 30 million subscribers. Well done, Netflix.

Apple adds "Download Later" option to iTunes in the Cloud

Apple adds "Download Later" option to iTunes in the Cloud

Apple has added a new option for iTunes in the Cloud users, allowing them to defer large downloads of movies, TV shows, and music box sets for a later time. Currently, this new option does not work for apps, and is available only in places where iTunes in the Cloud is live. This option is available on iOS 6 and in iTunes 11, and can be used on things like whole seasons of television shows.

Clicking the Later button will not download any episodes. You'll be able to download your episodes at any time from iTunes in the Cloud.

When you purchase a television show or movie, you will be presented with three options for movie sets and TV seasons: Later, Download, and Download All. For individual episodes and movies, as well as music box sets, the Download All option is not present. This option is great if you find a TV season or collection of movies you want to buy, but you don't want to use up the space on your current device, or are on a cellular network with a data cap to worry about. You will find any items that you choose to download later in the Purchased section of the iTunes 11 store and the Purchased tab of the iOS 6 store.

Volkswagen announces iBeetle, a car with deep iPhone integration

Volkswagen announces iBeetle, a car with deep iPhone integration

There have been previous rumors about Apple building an iCar, but it now seems that instead of building the vehicle themselves, they have partnered with Volkswagen to help create the iBeetle. The car, which Volkswagen says was designed in coordination with Apple, boasts integration with the iPhone through Volkswagens iBeetle app, which provides access to entertainment and diagnostic functions.

When the app is launched, it can either connect the iPhone to the Beetle ("docked"), or not ("undocked") – the driver or front passenger decides that. As soon as the iPhone connects to the data network of the Beetle via the app and the docking station ("docked"), it all begins.

The app provides access to Spotify, oil and coolant temperature gauges, compares a comprehensive set of data for different routes to a particular destination, and a photo function. While other manufacturers allow you to connect your iPhone to the car through Bluetooth or connecting cable, Volkswagen plans to provide the first truly integrated experience between iPhone and vehicle. Volkswagen also claims that this car was designed with the iPhone 5 in mind, though it seems likely that the iPhone 5S will have been released by the time the iBeelte ships to customers in early 2014.

Habit List for iPhone review: Keep track of your habits and set attainable goals

Habit List for iPhone review: Keep track of your habits and set attainable goals

All of us have bad habits we'd like to break and replace with good ones. Habit List for iPhone allows you to add goals that you'd like to achieve either on daily, weekly, or unscheduled intervals. Once you've completed a goal you've set for yourself, you can swipe to mark it off. As you start doing things every day, you'll notice that you obtain streaks within Habit List. If you forget to do things or fall off schedule, you'll see a negative streak for the days you haven't met your goals for accomplishing certain habits.

Habit List makes it easy to start using it and adding things. Once you've launched the app you'll be automatically taken to today's date. Just start tapping the "+" sign in the upper right hand corner to add new habits you'd like to make for yourself. The cool thing about Habits list is that there are several options as far as notifications and intervals. You can set habits to repeat every day, every few days, or just set them loosely so you set a goal to do them so many days a week.

Next to each habit, you'll see a number off to the left. This number represents your streak and how many times you've completed that habit in a row when it's scheduled. If you see a red number with a negative sign in front of it, that means you've missed performing that habit for that many days. Completing it will bring the count back to 1 and you'll start over on your streak.

Tapping on any habit within a list will show you statistics on that habit in weekly breakdowns. You can see a calendar view that'll show you how many times you've completed a particular habit followed by a completion rate percentage based on how many times you've achieved it and missed it. Along the top you can toggle between calendar view and stat view. Stat view will show bar graph representations that'll break down how many times you completed that habit in any particular week. At the bottom you'll also be reminded how many times you've chosen to do that habit.

From the Today screen you can tap on today or tap on the lower left icon in the bottom menu to pull out the submenu. Here you can jump to different days so if you forget to mark off a habit from yesterday, you can always jump back in and mark it at any time. To mark something as complete, just swipe across the title of it and you'll see a line appear through it which marks it as complete for the day. You can also tap on the repeating items icon in the bottom navigation in order to view what habits you've set to repeat. Here you can also reorder how they show up in your lists.

The good

  • Absolutely gorgeous interface
  • Streaks make you more aware of where you stand at a quick glance
  • Notification support makes it easy to remember to do repeating items every day
  • Passcode lock support

The bad

  • Would be nice to see support for monthly tasks but it's not a deal breaker

The bottom line

We've all got bad habits we want to replace, but in order to do that we typically have to put better ones in their place. Habit List can easily help you do this. With the ability to create rigorous habits or looser ones, it's got options for any kind of habit you'd like to form.

If you're looking to make some changes in your daily routine, Habit List make be just what you're looking for.

How to download individual podcast episodes with the Podcasts app for iPhone and iPad

If you follow certain video or audio podcasts regularly, you can use Apple's Podcasts app to do so. For podcasts you listen to or watch on a regular basis, it's typically better to just subscribe to them. If there's ever a time when you want to download a single podcast episode without subscribing, you have the option to easily do so.

Here's how:

  1. Launch the Podcasts app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on the Store icon in the upper left-hand corner.
  3. Search for the podcast that you'd like to download an episode of.
  4. You can either tap the download button next to the single item you'd like to download under the Episodes section or tap on the actual podcast under the Podcasts section.
  5. If you're in the actual podcast screen, you can scroll through and view descriptions and summaries of each episode and tap the Download button next to only the ones you'd like to download without subscribing.

Survey Says: iPad Still the Runaway Leader in Tablet Usage

Posted: 22 Apr 2013 10:01 AM PDT

March 13 Tablet Usage

The latest report from the Chitika online advertising group shows that the iPad is till the runaway leader in tablet usage share. The report is based on web traffic share – and the iPad's lead actually increased during March – to 81.9% of US and Canadian tablet web traffic.

Just to repeat, that's 81.9% for all iPads, and less than 20% for all other tablets. The closest rival? Amazon's Kindle Fire at below 8%, followed by Samsung tablets at less than 5%.

The worst news on here is for Microsoft. Just months after the launches of their Surface RT and Surface Pro tablets, and the enormous promotional spend on them, their share is well below 1%. They're running neck and neck with the Motorola Xoom, which was a major flop and was axed years ago.

Impressive numbers for the iPad.

Logitech adds gaming keyboards and mice for Mac users

Logitech adds gaming keyboards and mice for Mac users

Peripheral maker Logitech has long sold gaming products for PC gamers - mice, keyboards, game controllers and headphones - and recently grouped the products more formally under the "Logitech G" brand. Logitech's new G lineup includes six redesigned mice and keyboards which hit store shelves later this month. Now Logitech has announced Mac support for them.

The products covered so far include Logitech's complete line of G-branded mice and keyboards. All of them sport features optimized for gamers - mice with specialized buttons for gaming functions, precision electronics within, durable materials, wired and wireless designs. The keyboards feature adjustable backlighting and special programmable "G" keys, built-in LCD displays that show you in-game information, multi-key rollover and anti-ghosting circuitry to make sure you're as precise as you can be.

The Mac support comes from Logitech Gaming Software, which can be downloaded from the company's support pages for each of the new G products.

Logitech's G line also includes surround-sound headsets and game controllers like joysticks and gamepads, but those remain Windows-specific at this point. The company won't say if those products will be getting the Mac treatment any time soon, but this is a good start for Mac gamers looking to outfit their rigs with some sweet gaming gear.

Need a Big, Honking Telephoto Lens for Your iPad? Here’s One

Posted: 22 Apr 2013 08:44 AM PDT

iPad Telephoto Lens

Well here's a category of iPad accessory I have to admit I just don't ever think about – add-on lenses for the iPad camera. In this case a big, slightly silly looking, telephoto lens. It's The iPad Telephoto Lens, from Photojojo.

I got a PR approach about this one this morning, and I really like the product page for it. It does a good job of getting across what's good about the telephoto lens, but also has a good sense of humor about the nature of this beast, and even about the act of taking photos with an iPad.

Photojojo acknowledges that you may look a bit silly 'in this get-up' but promises that you'll end up with some 'seriously super' photos as the reward for using it.

So here are some of the promised benefits of using this lens on the iPad or iPad mini:

This lens adds 10-12 times telephoto power to your iPad.

It gets you closer to your subject without...
