Amazer shows off their screen protector... by taking a drill to it

Posted: 09 Jan 2013 12:45 AM PST

Amazer decided to put their iPhones where their mouths were at CES 2013, showing off their military grade screen protectors by taking drills and sanders to them. Sure, it's overly dramatic and power tool related iPhone scuffs probably aren't a threat most of us face every day, but if your screen protector can survive that, maybe it's got a shot at surviving kids, pets, and everyday life?

T-Mobile activating 100,000 iPhones per month, now supports 1.9 million devices

T-Mobile activating 100,000 iPhones per month, now supporting 1.9 million iPhones so farAccording to T-Mobile CEO John Legere, the company is seeing a huge intake of new iPhone customers and this is before it actually officially has the phone on its network. Speaking at their 2013 Citi Global Conference in Las Vegas today, Mr Legere claimed that T-Mobile was seeing around 100,000 iPhone activations every month. He also claimed that T-Mobile serves around 1.9 million iPhones on its network.

T-Mobile should be officially launching the iPhone later this year after it was revealed in an investors day meeting that T-Mobile USA will be launching Apple products in 2013, and speculation is heavy that that will include the iPhone.

T-Mobile certainly seems to be preparing for that launch as it is currently rolling out iPhone friendly 3G support. It also announced yesterday that it would soon be rolling out its first LTE service, starting co-incidentally in Las Vegas. The aggressive rollout will continue throughout the year with 100 million potential customers by the middle of this year and double that amount by the end of the year.

It sounds to me like T-Mobile is doing all the ground work in anticipation of the iPhone 5 arriving officially on its network in the not too distant future!

iPhone 5 comes to Walmart and Straight Talk

iPhone 5 comes to Walmart and Straight Talk

Walmart and Straight Talk Wireless will soon be carrying the iPhone 5 starting January 11. It will only be offered at its full, contract-free price, however, Straight Talk is offering an unlimited talk, text, and data plan for $45 per month, significantly cheaper than the plans available from the major US carriers.

In addition to Straight Talk's plan, Walmart will be offering customers with a Walmart Credit Card a financing plan that will allow customers to pay $25 per month to avoid the large up front cost. According to a statement Walmart representative, the total cost of the plan will be lower than most plans from one of the major national carriers:

"We believe customers shouldn't have to choose between saving money and having the latest technology," said Seong Ohm, senior vice president of Entertainment for Walmart U.S. "Now customers can have the coveted iPhone with unlimited talk, text and data without a contract for $70 a month thanks to our exclusive Straight Talk plan and industry first financing offer."

This is just the latest in the expansion of the iPhone to a variety of US carriers. While carriers like Straight Talk and Virgin Mobile use the networks of the major carriers, they are able to offer customers lower prices on plans while usually charging full price for the handset. The Straight Talk/Walmart deal is unique in offering customers the ability to pay for the cost of the iPhone over time without requiring a contract. Straight Talk Wireless uses AT&T's network, and at this time it isn't clear whether or not customers on this plan will be able to access AT&T's LTE network.

Cycloramic automatically rotates your iPhone 5 to capture handsfree 360 degree video

Posted: 08 Jan 2013 05:32 PM PST

Cycloramic is a really fun video recording app that will automatically spin your iPhone 5 around and record a video. As long as your iPhone 5 is placed on a smooth, flat surface, Cycloramic will use the vibrator in the iPhone 5 to make it spin 360 degrees. Not only is this impressive and just a lot of fun to watch, but Cycloramic is a great way to capture video of everyone sitting at a table during a dinner party or family gathering.

To use Cycloramic, you must make sure your iPhone 5 is set to vibrate on silent and to vibrate on ring, remove any case that may be on your iPhone 5, place it upright on a smooth flat surface, and hit Go! It'll countdown from 3 and start the spinning and recording. Check out the video below for an example video made with Cycloramic.

As of right now, Cycloramic only supports the iPhone 5 and video recording, but the folks at Egos Ventures promises that that next version will support the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S as well as panoramic photos. Make sure to check out the video below for a sneak peek at Cycloramic 2.0.

Cycloramic is one of those "you have to see it to believe it" apps and guaranteed to draw some crowds at your next social gathering.

Rumors say Apple could be working on a less expensive iPhone

Rumors say Apple could be working on a less expensive iPhone

It looks as if rumors are surfacing, once again, that Apple could be working on a cheaper iPhone that could hit the market as early as the end of this year. According to sources familiar with the matter, Apple has toyed with the idea in the past but ideas of producing an iPhone with a cheaper build are actually progressing this time.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, a cheaper iPhone variant could potentially have a cheaper polycarbonate body and recycled or refurbished iPhone parts, therefore lowering the entry cost.

The cheaper phone could resemble the standard iPhone, with a different, less-expensive body, one of the people said. One possibility Apple has considered is lowering the cost of the device by using a different shell made of polycarbonate plastic; in contrast, the iPhone 5 currently has an aluminum housing. Many other parts could remain the same or be recycled from older iPhone models.

We did get a cheaper iPad variant in the form of the iPad mini this year but iPads are different. The entry level cost of an iPad was $500 for the most current model. The $329 entry price of the iPad mini allows Apple to gain more market share in tablets.

Where the iPhone is concerned, we'd take these rumors with a huge grain of salt. Mainly because there already is a cheaper model iPhone available. Two actually. They're called the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. They're great alternatives to the iPhone 5 for those that don't want to dish out the money.

While nothing is impossible, we don't think Apple would skimp on design or build quality when they already offer iPhones at price points that pretty much everyone can afford.

iPhone DIY repair: Ultimate guide to fixing broken or unresponsive Home buttons

iPhone DIY repair: Ultimate guide to fixing broken or unresponsive Home buttons

Everything you need to know to DIY (do-it-yourself) repair a stuck or unresponsive Home button on your iPhone.

If you've owned iPhones over the years, you're probably familiar with Home button quirks. Since the Home button is the most used button on the device, and the only one you use for actual operation, it's typically the quickest to wear down and cause you problems. And no, WD-40 is not the answer. Regardless what iPhone model you have, it is possible to fix a malfunctioning Home button the right way.

We can walk you through not only how to replace the components that are causing the issue, but where to get quality parts and tools from the suppliers we trust. If you're not quite ready to give up your current iPhone and you're up to the challenge, follow along and we'll help you get your Home button back in working order in no time.

How to fix Home button issues in an AT&T/GSM iPhone 4

The GSM variant of the iPhone 4 is notorious for Home button issues. It's probably the most affected iPhone model when it comes to Home button crankiness. The flex cable assembly that sits underneath the actual button itself wears over time and after so many depressions. This means that the cable isn't making complete contact anymore which can result is mishits and issues such as double taps registering as single taps.

If this sounds like an issue you're having, the Home button flex probably needs to be replaced. While it isn't the easiest repair to perform, it's a super cheap fix as long as you have some good patience and steady hands.

How to fix Home button issues in a Verizon or Sprint iPhone 4

Just like it's older GSM brother, the Verizon and Sprint (CDMA) variant of the iPhone 4 uses the exact same Home button flex cable. This means that it can be just as prone to giving out over time. The reason we probably see more GSM iPhone 4 Home button repairs is because it's been available longer than the CDMA variant.

As the CDMA version of the iPhone 4 starts to show its age, you may exhibit Home button issues. While the Home button flex is the exact same part in both the GSM and CDMA iPhone 4, the actual repair process is quite different. So if you've got a Verizon or Sprint iPhone 4 with an angry Home button, you'll want to follow this guide instead.

How to fix Home button issues in an iPhone 4S

The iPhone 4S Home button assembly changed design from its iPhone 4 predecessor but it doesn't mean it's completely immune from Home button issues. It comes down to the fact that the Home button and power button are the two most used buttons on any iPhone model. The more presses, the faster a component wears down. It's just inevitable.

Unfortunately, even though Apple switched up the iPhone 4S Home button slightly in order to provide a little more support and contact with the flex cable, the actual cable assembly is still the same. Which means it's just as prone to wear down over time. Again, it's not the easiest repair in the world, but just like the iPhone 4, it can be done for extremely cheap.

If you're experiencing issues with your iPhone 4S and you just can't see getting a new iPhone just yet, a Home button replacement may be a great option.

How to fix Home button issues in an iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS

The iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS are nowhere near as prone to Home button issues as the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S but it doesn't mean it can't happen. If you've got an older iPhone 3G or 3GS that you just don't want to part with, whether that's due to sentimental reasons, or you just want your kids to have an iPod substitute, it's still a great device to keep laying around.

While the Home button isn't super simple to replace, the front digitizer assembly is. And it just so happens to contain the Home button assembly. You'll not only get a new Home button assembly, you'll get a brand new piece of glass and the labor is super simple. And did we mention it's also an extremely cheap fix?

Tim Cook makes second trip to China in 10 months

Tim Cook makes second trip to China in 10 months

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, is making is second trip to China in 10 months. While many details of his visit were not disclosed by Apple, it is known that he met with the head of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology to discuss, among other things, Apple's business in China, which is growing rapidly. As Bloomberg reports, Apple has almost doubled the number of stores they have in China after Cook's last visit to the country in March, where he said that Apple would make larger investments in the country:

The Apple chief had visited China in March and pledged "greater investment" in the world's largest market for computers and mobile phones. Since then, the Cupertino, California-based company has almost doubled its number of stores in China and Hong Kong to 11, from six at the time of Cook's last visit.

China is an increasingly important part of Apple's business. Apple sold two million iPhone 5 handsets in China during the device's launch weekend last month, and they can barely keep the iPad mini stocked to meet demand. There is no doubt that Apple has more retail locations planned for China, as the stores have long been seen as one of the keys to Apple's success in other parts of the world. There is massive potential for growth in China and Apple will do everything in their power to make sure that they reach as many customers as possible.

AT&T announces record Q4 smartphone sales, if history is any indicator, iPhone 5 says they're welcome

AT&T announces record Q4 smartphone sales, if history is any indicator, iPhone 5 says they're welcome

While AT&T won't be announcing their Q4 2012 financial results until January 24, they just couldn't help but slip out a teaser regarding record smartphone sales in the quarter. How record? 10 million devices, up from 9.4 million in Q4 2011. That includes iPhone, Android, and Windows Phone, but based on previous quarters, that's likely to skew hugely towards Apple and the iPhone 5 launch. Ralph de la Vega, president and chief executive officer for AT&T Mobility, said:

We had another incredible quarter of smartphone sales as the mobile Internet continues to drive strong growth in wireless. These are the industry's most valuable postpaid subscribers with average revenues twice that of non-smartphone subscribers. During the quarter, we averaged more than 110,000 smartphone sales a day as customers flocked to our leading portfolio of the latest Android, Apple and Windows devices. Combine that with the nation's largest 4G network and lightning-fast LTE network that now reaches more than 170 million people and you'll understand why customers continue to choose AT&T in record numbers.

Last year 7.6 million of those 9.4 million activations were iPhones. That's 80%. This year, the iPhone 5 launched during Q4. AT&T mentions Android before Apple in their statement (maybe alphabetically?), but it'll be interesting to see how the ratio shakes out this year.

What's your bet? Will Apple's share of AT&T activations be up or down?

The second day of the Mobile Nations 2013 CES Experience started out with a lot of sightseeing. After leaving the accommodations at the Rio, our team made it to Paris, Planet Hollywood, the Bellagio, the Cosmopolitan and Caesar's Palace…Eyes were wide and a great time was had by all.

Hit the link below for some cool photos from the day, along with a wrap up on the evening of day 2!

Some shopping was done as well. Who needs new blinged-out headphones???

The evening kicked off with a great dinner at the Eiffel Tower Restaurant at the Paris Hotel. Unbelievable food and drink was had, but that was only the start. To follow, we made our way over to the Marquee nightclub at the Cosmopolitan for some late night drinks and camaraderie within some amazing surroundings.

Tomorrow morning means business time (I suspect I'll see a lot of jaw dropping and giggling from the crew), as it'll be opening day for CES. We will be down at registration bright and early to get passes, and then onward to explore the NVIDIA booth with our good friends. I know there's much excitement in the air, and I honestly can't wait to see the crew's faces when they cross the threshold onto one of the show floors for the very first time. It's going to be great stuff!

Once again, a HUGE thanks to our amazing friends at @NVIDIATegra. The good times are just getting started!

Did your Do Not Disturb bug fix itself yesterday as Apple said it would?

Posted: 08 Jan 2013 01:37 AM PST

Did your Do Not Disturb bug fix itself yesterday as Apple said it would? As we all know, the Do Not Disturb feature of iOS 6 that lets you mute Notification Center alerts during specified periods. Apple told us that the problem would fix itself on January 7; we want to know if it is now working again for you?

Do Not Disturb is a feature that I was using every day to stop annoying notifications coming through at night waking me up unnecessarily. Of course you could still use the Do Not Disturb feature, the only area that was problematic for some reason was the scheduling of turning it on and off automatically at set times. This failed on January 1 2013 and Do Not Disturb had to be used in a manual mode.

I can report that my Do Not Disturb scheduling is back to normal now; it came on last night and automatically switched itself off again at 7am this morning. How are you finding it? Has your Do Not Disturb scheduling gone back to normal now as Apple said it would?
