Turn your iPhone into a thermal imaging device with the IR-Blue Kickstarter project

Turn your iPhone into a thermal imaging device with the IR-Blue Kickstarter projectIf you have ever had the need for a thermal imaging device then you know how expensive they can be. Well this latest Kickstarter project looks to change all of that by utilizing your iPhone and a new clip on thermal imaging camera. The project which is currently running on Kickstarter, was developed over a need to find leaks in a home owners property to curtail spiraling energy costs.

I have a 100 year old house that can be drafty and hard to heat in the winter. I have been wanting a thermal imaging camera to help find leaks ever since we bought this house. The cheapest one I could find was $1,500 so I finally just made my own. This is the IR-Blue.

The IR-Blue lets you see the temperature of things around you. It uses a 64 zone non-contact InfraRed sensor array to read the temperature of what you are viewing. The IR-Blue connects using Bluetooth to your iPhone or Android device to show the temperature readings as colors on the screen.

The IR-Blue has already smashed its funding target of $20,000 and currently sits at over $112k. Thankfully it is not too late to grab a piece of the early action. You can make a pledge starting at $145 for a self-assembly kit or $165 for an IR-Blue fully assembled.

This is certainly an accessory that I would be interested in, I have an old stone built house that leaks energy like a sieve. With one of these attached to my iPhone I could pin point all of the problematic areas with ease. What do you think of the IR-Blue?

How to flag an email message on iPhone and iPad

Sometimes you get an email that you want to easily find again later, maybe to follow up, maybe just to keep handy. Luckily, your iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad Mail app comes with this functionality built right in. All you have to do to keep special track of a message is flag it. Then you can read, reply, or refer to again quickly and easily, whenever you need to.

  1. Launch the Mail app from the Home screen of your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad.
  2. Tap on the Inbox or other mail box that contains the message you'd like to flag.
  3. Tap the Edit button in the upper right hand corner.
  4. Tap on the message or messages you'd like to flag. They'll get highlighted.
  5. Tap on the Mark button in the lower right hand corner.
  6. Tap Flag.
  7. An icon will appear next to the message so you'll know it's flagged.

Once you have a message (or messages) flagged, a special Flagged mailbox will appear in your Mail account list. Tap on it to see a list of all your flagged messages.

If you ever want to unflag a message, you'll repeat the same steps as above and choose Unflag the second time around.

Best New Year's 2013 celebration apps for iPhone

As we head into the year 2013, you're probably finalizing your plans for New Year's Eve, but have you considered how you're going to use your iPhone during the celebration? Whether you're going out for a night on the town, attending a house party, or staying home, we have rounded up some iPhone apps that will help you ring in the new year.

New Year's Live

New Year's Live an app by EarthCam that present exclusive webcams of New Year's 2014 celebrations live around the world, including Time Square in New York City. The cameras include audio so you can hear countdowns from the crowd and cheers and noise as the clock strikes midnight. New Year's Live also includes a photo booth that lets you have fun taking pictures with New Year's Eve costume pieces, a Party Box for making noise at midnight, and more.

Uber

New Year's Eve and alcohol go hand-in-hand, but driving does not fit into that equation -- and that's where Uber comes in. With Uber, you can request a taxi, classic black sedan, or SUV to pick you and your friends up. The app is super easy to use, even in a drunken state, and the fare will automatically be charged to your credit card at the end of the ride so that you have one less thing to think about.

Mixology/Mixologist Drink & Cocktail Recipes

Staying home and hosting a party instead hitting the town? Then Mixology or Mixologist will help you be the best bartender ever. It features thousands of recipes and a liquor cabinet feature that filters drinks that you can make based on the ingredients you have on hand. The difference between the free version, Mixology, and the paid version, Mixologist, is that Mixologist also includes a custom drinks feature, more ways to choose random drinks, and no ads.

2012 QUIZ

2012 QUIZ is a trivia game about this past year including topics ranging from the Grammy Award, the Olympics, hurricane Sandy, Music, Movies, and more. The free version includes a smaller set of questions as a way to allow you to try before you buy, and the $2.99 upgrade unlocks more than 200 questions, a score sheet, and strips away the ads. 2012 Quiz is a great way to have some fun during a New Year's party... you could even turn it into a drinking game!

Times Square Official New Year's Eve Ball App - 2013

In America, the place to be on New Year's Eve is Times Square in New York City, but very few of us actually get to be there and instead watched the yearly Ball Drop on our televisions. Well, now you can watch from your iPhone as well! With the Times Square Official New Year's Eve Ball App - 2013 you can participate in the festivities by submitting your own photos (that may be featured on the Toshiba Vision screen atop Times Square, directly below the Ball), send New Years Eve ecards, and watch live streaming of the evens in Times Square.

Your favorite New Year's Eve celebration app?

Are there any other apps you plan to use this New Year's Eve? We want to know about them! If you pick any of these ones up, let us know what you think!

Happy New Year!

Review — Lili for iPad

Posted: 30 Dec 2012 12:02 PM PST

When it comes to games with female protagonists, the iPad is sorely lacking. Ever since I started reviewing iPad games, I've been on the hunt for ones with female leads, and have sadly come up short. Most of the games I've found were "girly," with topics and themes only women (particularly teens and tweens) would [...]

Editor's desk: The iMore hall of fame

Editor's desk: The iMore hall of fame

I've always been of the mindset that halls of fame should matter. It should take time to qualify, so impact and importance can be weighed with the full context and clarity of history. It should also be limited, so that those who change the way we think and feel, who inspire and innovate, who challenge and redefine, get the recognition they deserve, rather than simply getting lost in yet another list.

It takes 25 years after the release of a debut recording to qualify for the rock and roll hall of fame. It takes 5 years after retirement to qualify for the baseball hall of fame. And in most cases, only a handful are inducted each year. Given that, we figured it should take 5 years after the release of an app to qualify for the iMore hall of fame, and that we'd likewise restrict ourselves to only a handful of inductees each year.

Of course, since we're starting the iMore hall of fame in 2012, that means the first season of eligibility begins with the release of the original iPhone in June of 2007, and that means pre-App Store. And that's fitting.

Apple didn't initially support third-party apps or third-party app makers. That took until June of 2008 and iOS 2.0 (iPhone OS 2.0). Yet during that time, truly groundbreaking and trendsetting work was done by ingenious developers and designers. Using reverse engineering and jailbroken devices, they paved the way for much of what has come since, both from Apple and from the App Store.

We first started talking about an iMore hall of fame back in 2010, but we decided to wait and I'm glad we did. The people involved in the earliest of iOS apps did historic work, and they deserve historic recognition.

Starting tomorrow we'll be announcing our first inductees. If you were around at the beginning and marveled at (or even helped make) those first, pre-App Store apps, let me know what your favorites were, and who you would choose to honor, and why.

We're keeping the list really, really short, but we want to get it right.

Weekend iPad Wallpapers: Apple Logos

Posted: 30 Dec 2012 10:10 AM PST

This weekend's iPad wallpaper choices are from one of my favorite categories – Apple logos. Many of the iPad wallpapers that I've kept the longest on my home screens have been from this category. First up today is the pile of 3D sliver Apple logos on a deep blue background shown above. This one, and [...]

iPad 5 Renderings – Too Soon?

Shown above is what a thinner, more iPad mini-like iPad 5 might look like, based on the latest rumors on the iPad 5th gen. The render was created by Martin Hajek, who created a set of iPad mini renders that proved to be not far off at all when the iPad mini was unveiled. I [...]
