Updated Apple TV taken apart, reveals tiny A5 system-on-a-chip

Latest Apple TV taken apart, shows tiny A5 system-on-a-chip

Earlier this year Apple updated the Apple TV with new internals. There was no press release and no public statement of any kind, just a slightly updated model trickling its way into inventory. Well, MacRumors got their hands on one, took it apart and found what looks to be an even smaller version of the Apple A5 system-on-a-chip. Eric Slivka reports:

The original A5 chip introduced in 2011 for the iPad 2 was built on a 45-nanometer process, measuring 10.09 mm by 12.15 mm, while the first die-shrunk A5 introduced in 2012 for the third-generation Apple TV and the tweaked iPad 2 measured 41% smaller at 8.19 mm by 8.68 mm.

This new A5 found in the tweaked third-generation Apple TV is considerably smaller still, with our measurements putting the chip at just 6 mm by 6 mm.

Chipsets are primarily named for marketing reasons, not for technology identification purposes (that's what part numbers of for). Brian Klug of AnandTech pointed out on Twitter that Apple can screen any label they want on the chipset, and that it'll take a Chipworks-level look inside the package to really know what's going on in there.

Why does it matter? It may not. Typically smaller dies save power and better fit limited size casings. They're invaluable for mobile devices like the iPhone and iPad, but for something like the Apple TV that's relatively large and always plugged in?

Speculation has included a test run for a new, non-Samsung foundry, to a test for a new, smaller process, or for something destined for lower-end, next-generation mobile devices. Given the hobby-status of the Apple TV, maybe that makes sense. We'll only know for sure when the chip gets the once-over, and next-generation mobile devices ship.

iMore show. Tonight. 6pm PDT. 9pm EDT. Be here!

The iMore show returns tonight with special guest Brian Klug of Anandtech, and we're going to discuss all the week's news. And science! Keep an eye on the time as well, because some of us shifted to daylight savings time, which means things could be shifted an hour in your part of the world. (Thankfully smartphones and tablets have clock apps for that, right?)

Comparing iPad calendar apps at a glance

Comparing iPad calendar apps at a glance

Earlier this week, I compared the default views of 12 popular iPhone calendar apps, and since sometimes good things also come in bigger packages, now it's time for the iPad. No surprise here, but as with the 5 iPad podcast apps, 18 iPad weather apps, and 9 iPad Twitter apps, not all iPhone calendar apps have versions or interfaces for the iPad. We get 10 this time.

And.. they're a mixed bag. A few of them bring iPad style and grace to their calendar interfaces. Most are pretty good. One looks like no designer really cared to do much design. As with the iPhone versions, that might be because there's a split between apps designed for iOS users, and for users who prefer functionality over form in the best old Windows Mobile sense of the word...

Here they are, in order:

iPad calendar app screens

Those are just the default view, one of many offered by each app. Most offer a combination of year, month, day, and list view, as well as a host of other, sometimes distinct features. For a more in-depth look, check out our full reviews.

Meanwhile, check out the screenshots above and let me know if any of the calendar apps jump out at you. Any of them look good enough that you'd consider switching to them?

New Star Trek into Darkness teaser shows JJ Abrams is already making Star Wars

Posted: 10 Mar 2013 11:09 AM PDT

What you see above is the exclusive Star Trek Into Darkness teaser attached to Oz: The Great and Powerful, and posted online by avindustries13. It's the second Star Trek movie from director JJ Abrams, who has most recently been signed to direct the first of the Star Wars sequels. One look at this teaser, however, shows Abrams has already been doing just that. At the very least, he's bringing the grit dynamism of Star Wars to Star Trek. And hey, Spock does a pretty good job filling the Chewy seat.

Star Trek: Into Darkness hits theaters in May but you can already grab the official companion app from the app store:

You can also grab previous Star Trek TV shows and Movies from iTunes, including Abrams' first movie, the one that launched the re-imagining.

And if you thirst for the non-re-imagined Star Trek Universe, the one of Picard and Sisko and Janeway, Mobile Nations' own Derek Kessler has just released Star Trek: Aldrin, his vision for the future of the Federation, Dominion, and galaxy in general. I read the first book, Sic Semper Tyrannis, and it was great. Get your ablative armor up, load the transphasic torpedoes, and fire away at while you're waiting! (And man can Kessler model some amazing looking Star Ships!)

Screen Time 28: Kings of the Keynote

Screen Time 28: Kings of the Keynote

I joined Moisés Chiullan on his 5by5 show, Screen Time last week to talk about how companies communicate with their stakeholders, including investors, developers, and customers/end users. Or in Sony's case with the PS4 event, how they failed to. As Moisés put it:

In this sibling episode to Critical Path 74, Rene Ritchie joins Moisés to discuss keynote culture, why and how Sony's PS4 event was a bust, and whether keynotes as we know them are a dying breed.

If you're interested in technology beyond Apple, though compared and contrasted with Apple, give it a listen. And don't miss the After Dark companion show.

Weekend iPad Wallpapers: Penguins

Penguins iPad Wallpaper

This weekend's iPad wallpaper selection is Penguins, those two cute fellas (or lasses) shown above.

Selection this week was a bit of a no-brainer for me. My daughter is a huge animal lover. She's been fascinated with animals of all types ever since she was tiny, she wants to be a vet when she grows up, and right now penguins are right around the top of her list of favorite animals.

And … today is her 10th birthday. So these are not just iPad wallpaper penguins – they're also doubling as Birthday Tribute Penguins.

Birthday Penguins

Happy Birthday Zoe.

Great Coffee App adds prep video for your caffeine fixes

Posted: 10 Mar 2013 08:01 AM PDT

The Great Coffee App launched a while back with great design, gorgeous music, but limited content. Now that they've presumably knocked back a dozen or more twenty-shots, developers Baglan Dosmagambetov and Alexander Nogay are back for a second cup, and it's filled to the brim with video.

That's right, the Great Coffee App has now added videos to show you how each and every one of the coffee-based beverages are prepared. If you're curious, that's Espresso, Espresso Ristretto, Espresso Lungo, Espresso Macchiato, Espresso Con Panna, Espresso Romano, Espresso Doppio, Latte, Americano, Cappuccino, Marocchino, Latte Macchiato, Caffe Mocha, Irish coffee, Cafeccino, Vienna coffee.

There's a huge intersection of geeks who love gadgets, geeks who love apps, and geeks who love coffee, so if you're one of us, and you're looking for a way to learn and enjoy more about coffee on your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, check out the Great Coffee App. Now with video.

I tend to get my fancy beverage fix from latte and cappuccino. What are you drinking?

The Magazine updated with ability to send letters to the editor, more

The Magazine updated with ability to send letters to the editor, more

The Magazine, created by Marco Arment and executive edited by Glenn Fleishman, has been updated to version 1.2.2, but don't let the small increase in numbering fool you -- there are a couple of great new features contained within it (and not just the story kind).

First and foremost, with the new version of The Magazine you can now "Write Letter to Editor". Similar to the traditional newspaper and magazine system, Arment and Fleishman say:

We'd love to hear from you, and we may publish your letters in future issues.

Also added is support for Gmail and Sparrow, so you can use them to send your letters, or share via email, if your prefer.

Since iOS doesn't currently support anything like intents or contracts, or provide the ability to set third party apps as default, it's up to developers to work that out on an app by app basis. And it's great to see Arment doing just that.

The Magazine remains one of our favorite reading apps for iOS. If you haven't already, it's free to try and, if the subject matter interests you, easy to subscribe to.

Sony targets potential iPhone converts with its updated Xperia Transfer software

Posted: 10 Mar 2013 01:54 AM PST

Sony targets potential iPhone converts with its updated Xperia Transfer softwareSony has released an update to its Xperia Transfer software suit that it offers free of charge to users of its Xperia branded handsets. The latest update looks to seamlessly ease iPhone users over to the Xperia's Android platform by helping them transfer their content from their iPhone. The software claims to be able to transfer an iPhone's contacts, messages, calendar entries, notes, bookmarks, and iTunes music.

Is your current phone an iPhone? Use Xperia Transfer in PC Companion or Sony Bridge for Mac to easily transfer your content and contacts to your new Sony device. Note: Xperia Transfer supports the following Sony devices: Xperia V (LT25), Xperia VC, Xperia TX (LT29), Xperia T (LT30), Xperia TL (LT30), Xperia T (LT30), Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZQ.

In order to use the software, you first have to sync your iPhone using iTunes. The Xperia Transfer suite can then presumably access the iPhone's backup file to extract the relevant information before converting it and transferring it to a format that Sony's Xperia range of handsets can understand.

HTC updated its Sync Manager software last month to offer the same services as this Sony software and that worked by accessing the iPhone's backup file. It will be very interesting to see how long it takes Apple to close off this loophole and prevent HTC and Sony from releasing software to entice iPhone users away from the platform.
