Evasi0n jailbreak tool updated to version 1.3, now supports iOS 6.0, 6.1 and 6.1.1

Evasi0n jailbreak tool updated to version 1.3, now supports iOS 6.0, 6.1 and 6.1.1The evad3rs team have wasted no time at all in updating their hugely popular evasi0n jailbreak tool to support the just released iOS 6.1.1 firmware. The new evasi0n release, which is now up to version 1.3, fully supports iOS 6.0, 6.1 and 6.1.1. iOS 6.1.1 was released yesterday solely for iPhone 4S devices after widespread reports of poor 3G connectivity and Exchange account problems after the iOS 6.1 update.

evasi0n 1.3 with support for iOS 6.1.1 on iPhone 4S has been released on

evasi0n 1.3 should now correctly support OSX 10.5 and we also lowered the linux glibc requirement to 2.3

The evad3rs team stress that if you are planning on updating to iOS 6.1.1 on your iPhone 4S and want to re-jailbreak then there is a certain way that it has to be done. They warn that doing an OTA update should be avoided and the correct way of doing it would be to make a backup of your device in iTunes and then do a full restore.

How's your battery life on iOS 6.1? [Poll]

Posted: 11 Feb 2013 08:40 PM PST

iOS 6.1 has been out for a while now -- and iOS 6.1.1 just hit for the iPhone 4S -- so we're wondering how your battery life is doing? It seems every time Apple pushed out an update, some people get better battery life, others get worse battery life, and many just stay the same.

Part of this good be fresh starts with fresh versions cleaning out cruft that has built up for a while, or it could be bit-rot from old installs backed up and restored far too often. If your battery life is horrible, we have a bunch of really useful iOS 6 battery life fixes for you to try out. Either way, we want to know what you're experiencing!

Let us know how your battery life is doing, whether you set up as a new iPhone or iPad, whether you're jailbroken, and whether or not you have tons of push notifications going off all the time, or if you're running with almost none.

iCookbook dishes up CROCK-POT recipes at Macworld|iWorld 2013

Posted: 11 Feb 2013 03:10 PM PST

This year we went straight from Macworld|iWorld 2013 to Mobile Nations Fitness Month, but who says we can't have some overlap? iCookbook was on the show floor with their new CROCK-POT app, and while not everything you slow cook may be healthy, it will come from home, and that means you can choose to make it healthy! Just pick great ingredients and let the flavors do the work.

Su Bermingham showed us the CROCK-POT app, which includes over 250 recipes, and features like voice-command, so you don't have to get your iPhone or iPad dirty, easier-to-see Prepare Mode for when you're working, handy kitchen tools like timers, and the ability to not only favorite any of the included recipes so they're always easy to find, but the ability to add your own as well.

Some might call CROCK-POT cooking easy -- or lazy -- but when you're in a time crunch, it's also a great way to make sure you and your family can enjoy a homemade meal, and not have to rely on junky takeout all the time.

CROCK-POT is a universal app for both iPhone and iPad. Grab it now and get slow cooking!

Apple releases iOS 6.1.1 for iPhone 4S, addresses cellular problems

Apple releases iOS 6.1.1 for iPhone 4S, addresses cellular problems

Apple has released iOS 6.1.1 but only for the iPhone 4S, at least for now. The update comes amid reports of cellular data issues preventing proper use of the device, originally released in 2011. Apple's release notes include mention of just specifically that:

This update fixes an issue that could impact cellular performance and reliability for iPhone 4S.

The update is available over-the-air (OTA) via Settings > General > Software update, or through iTunes via USB tether.

No word yet on a release of iOS 6.1.1 for other versions of the iPhone, or for the iPod touch or iPad and iPad mini. Apple did issue it in beta form recently, but likely expedited a limited version to fix the iPhone 4S-specific problems as quickly as possible. Whether that means the other versions are coming, or the next beta will be filliped to iOS 6.1.2 and proceed according to their original schedule is unknown.

If you've been experiencing cellular data problems with the iPhone 4S, once you've updated, let us know if they're really, truly fixed.

Comparing iPhone Twitter app timeline views

Posted: 11 Feb 2013 11:44 AM PST

It's often been said that we enjoy an embarrassment of riches when it comes to Twitter apps for iPhone. Some of the best developers and designers have spent months and years crafting, and in some cases continually re-crafting, app for Twitter, striving for their versions of perfection. And this in spite of Twitter's recent proclamations encouraging third party clients to walk out onto ice flows or sand dunes and die already. Over the weekend, Phil Nickinson compared 17 Twitter app timelines for Android, and he promptly challenged me to do the same for iPhone. I one-upped him with 18, though admittedly I cheated by including 3 discontinued Twitter apps in the comparison.

It's interesting to see them all gridded up, to see the juxtaposition of consistency vs. creativity, readability vs. information density. I used the exact same feed point for each client, with the exception of the legacy apps at the bottom. It includes an @mention so that we can see how, if at all, a client highlights or otherwise distinguishes that type of post. I also got rid of ads, wherever possible, to keep things clean, and made sure basic controls were in a visible state.

Here then, in order, from top left to bottom right, are:

  1. Twitter, Twitterrific, Tweetbot
  2. Flurry, Twittelator Neue, Twittelator Pro
  3. Watercooler, Tweetlist, Tweetcaster
  4. Tweetlogix, Echofon Pro, Tweetings
  5. Tweetdeck, UberSocial, Osfoora
  6. Birdfeed, Tweetie, Reportage (discontinued)

Of course, the timeline view is only one aspect of a Twitter app, and can't properly address features and flourishes like gestures, notifications and filters, parallax image embeds, sorting, and other ways some of the clients have innovative and provided extra enjoyment and value.

Consider this comparison, then, just a start.

(Yes, the hero shot above is Ollie and Twitterrific 1.0, the original iPhone app that started it all, and one of the first inductees into our Hall of Fame.)

And if you want DVD-style extras, and a peak behind the scenes of your favorite Twitter apps, check out:

Meanwhile, look over the designs above and let me know what you think. Which Twitter apps do you use, and are they the same ones that appeal to you most in the comparison above? Any of the timelines attractive enough they encourage you check out an alternative app? And how do you think they compare to the best and brightest of the Android Twitter app timelines Phil looked at?

iPad at Work: for BMW Showroom Geniuses

Posted: 11 Feb 2013 09:43 AM PST

BMW Geniuses with iPads

We've seen a number of case studies of the iPad in use in retail stores to enhance the customer experience and increase sales. Now the iPad is set to feature in another blue-chip retail environment: BMW showrooms – as Advertising Age reports:

Inspired by Apple retail stores, BMW is requiring dealers to hire young, tech-savvy employees to handle questions about its vehicles on the showroom floor.

The "BMW Genius Everywhere" program is slated to go nationwide in about a year, with specially trained employees — many of them college students — patrolling dealerships with iPads in hand. The BMW "geniuses" will be available to inform shoppers about vehicles and features, but they will not sell cars.

The BMW Geniuses are not salesman, and are paid a salary only – no commission on sales. Instead their approach is said to be similar to that of...

How to delete lists in the Reminders app on iPhone and iPad

How to delete lists in the Reminders app on iPhone and iPad

Once you've started creating reminders and lists to put them in, there may come a time when you don't need one of those lists anymore. Perhaps you set up a list for a specific project that is now over or you don't need a shared list with a colleague anymore. Instead of leaving a list you don't intend on using anymore within the Reminders app, you can just as easily delete it.

  1. Launch the Reminders app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on the Menu button in the upper left hand corner on your iPhone. If you have an iPad, tap the Edit button in the upper left hand corner.
  3. On the iPhone, now tap on the Edit button in the upper right hand corner. On the iPad, you'll already be in the edit menu.
  4. You'll now see a **delete button ** appear to the left of each list name. Tap on the one next to the list you'd like to delete.
  5. You'll now see a Delete option appear to the right of the list. Tap on it to confirm the delete.

We advise you to use caution when completely deleting lists from Reminders if they are shared lists as you will also be removing them from anyone else's devices if you are the one that created them initially.

Mobile Nations fitness month week 2: Nutrition!

Leave a comment below telling us your Fitness Month goals and be entered to win a Withings Wireless Scale!

It's February and you know what that means? Mobile Nations Fitness Month! That's when we all get together to get in shape, share tips and tricks and recipes for success, review amazing apps and accessories, give away great prizes, and have a ton of fun! This year we're doing it a little differently, though. We're doing weekly themes, and that means every week you'll have new and exciting challenges, and new chances to win!

Week 2: Nutrition!

You know the old saying, you are what you eat? It's a cliche because it's true. Food is what gets us going and makes us run. Eating the right foods can improve the way we look and feel, how we handle stress and how we make it through the day. Food is our fuel, and we want to make sure we give our bodies and minds the best fuel possible.

As part of fitness month, we'll be reviewing a bunch of great apps and accessories that can help motivate, track, and train us to eat better and smarter. We'll also be doing THREE cool contests!

Eating Clean contest

First is our Eating Clean contest. Every day this week there'll be a thread in our health and fitness forums, and all you have to do to enter is tell us what you ate during the day. The idea is to get a little community pressure going so we all eat less junk food and more healthy, tasty meals and snacks. If you have a food tracker, a Withings scale, or any other device that helps you out, you can simply share your results each day!

This is a great way to keep us all motivated and accountable, and get a little healthy peer-pressure going! Plus, every day you enter is a chance to win a $20 gift certificate!

Nutrition MY Way contest

Second is our Nutrition MY Way contest. Just head on over to Nutrition MY Way thread in the forums and tell us how you use your mobile device, your phone or tablet, to eat healthier. What are your favorite apps? What are your go to accessories? We want to know! Tell it to us in the form of a story, like a blog post. We'll post the best entries on Friday, so get them in ASAP! Need more incentive? We'll pick one winner a week and send them a $100 gift certificate!

Comment to win contest

Last but certainly not least, leave a comment below telling us about your Mobile Nations Fitness Month goals and you'll be entered to win a Withings Wireless Scale! It's a great -- and super geeky! -- way to track your weight. You want to win this, so hurry up and leave a comment NOW!

Real Racing 3 Release Date Revealed?

Posted: 11 Feb 2013 07:46 AM PST

Real Racing 3

According to a report at Portable Gaming Region, the release date for the eagerly awaited Real Racing 3 iPad and iOS game has been revealed. Apparently the game is set to hit the App Store on February 28.

The announcement was made during Donald Faison's visit to the EA Mobile's L.A. offices. The famous actor got some hands-on time with Real Racing 3 on both Android and iOS devices …

February 28 is a Thursday, which is the big new release day in the App Store – so at least piece of this report is plausible, though I still don't see any official word on a release date at the developers site.

I'm a big fan of the Real Racing series on iPad – so I'm certainly hoping this proves true. In the meantime, check out the latest Real Racing 3 Developer Diary video at the FireMonkeys site – the game really does look and sound great.

Shocker: Supposed iPhone 5S spy pics are fake

Posted: 11 Feb 2013 07:50 AM PST

Are these the first spy shots of the iPhone 5S?!?!?!?!?!

"Are these the first spy shots of the iPhone 5S?!?!?!?!?!" No. God no. And neither are those KIRF pictures posted by a bunch of sites in Asia today. If Apple follows their previous S-series pattern, iPhone 5S cases wouldn't be high order news anyway. At best, they'd be just another small signpost on the long road towards Apple's next release.

Big news would a re-designed casing, or a casing for a new device, reported by at least semi-reliable sources, and passing normal tests of reason, logic, and sanity.

If you see the photos floating around, ignore them. They're not the iPhone 5S. We now return you to your regularly scheduled, non-Archer-verse Apple coverage...

The Wally iPhone wallet arrives on Kickstarter, a new way to carry your bank cards

    Posted: 11 Feb 2013 03:27 AM PST

The Wally iPhone wallet arrives on Kickstarter, a new way to carry your bank cardsWally has arrived on Kickstarter and it claims to be a wallet for the iPhone but redesigned. We have all seen loads of cases that also include a wallet but what if you don't want a case and just want something simple to hold your bank card? Well this is where the Wally looks to help you out. It is designed to cling to the back of your iPhone and can contain up to three bank type cards securely.

Wally isn't yet another wallet case, but rather a handcrafted leather pocket that grabs onto the back of your iPhone to secretly and securely hold what you need to have close at hand. He's the handsome grab-and-go solution.

Instead of a bulky case or a wallet with a pocket for your iPhone, Wally clings to the back of your iPhone and slick, gloss-finish cases. Utilizing micro-suction instead of glue or magnets, Wally has a grip like a gentleman: strong and secure, without leaving behind any tackiness.

The cards, once inserted in the wallet will not just fall out either, in order to get them out again you will have to pull them out using the included pull-tab system. The Wally is currently a Kickstarter project however it has already blasted through its funding target which was set at just $12,000. It still has 18 days left to run and currently sits at over $43,000; it appears that the Wally could be quite a popular product.

The Wally will be available in Ninja Black and Cowboy Brown and will be suitable for the iPhone 4, 4S and iPhone 5. If you fancy getting your hands on one of these as early as possible, you can still make a pledge starting from $40.

What do you think of the Wally iPhone wallet?
