Weekend iPad Wallpaper: Dark, Simple Grungy

Dark Simple Grungy iPad wallpaper

This weekend's iPad wallpaper pick is Dark, Simple, Grungy – shown above. I've always been a big fan of simple abstract or pattern wallpapers for my iPad – and this one absolutely fits the bill.

I'm also a sucker for deep, dark backgrounds that allow iPad app icons to really pop – and again this one definitely puts a check in that box.

I came across this one in the iWalls – wallpapers for iPad app, in the 'Simple' section – which has a very nice selection.

I've uploaded this one to our iPad Insight Flickr group – where we are seeing more and more great iPad wallpapers and incredible iPad artwork shared.

What's your favorite type of iPad wallpaper?

Apple iWatch rumors get wound up again

Apple iWatch rumors get wound up again

An Apple iWatch is back in the rumor mill today, running deep with Dick Tracy nostalgia, Bond envy, and wearable future fancy. Since we have the iPhone and the iPad, and nothing Apple has already made is ever good enough, it's only ever what's next that matters, and when that's not an iTV, it's this. Preamble done, here's Nick Bilton from the New York Times:

In its headquarters in Cupertino, Calif., Apple is experimenting with wristwatch-like devices made of curved glass, according to people familiar with the company's explorations, who spoke on the condition that they not be named because they are not allowed to publicly discuss unreleased products. Such a watch would operate Apple's iOS platform, two people said, and stand apart from competitors based on the company's understanding of how such glass can curve around the human body.

Mobile payments, proximity logins, notification projection, Siri integration, the dream list goes on and on.

It's not remotely outlandish to imagine Apple is considering just such a device in their labs. If Apple is ever to release an iWatch, beyond an Apple TV-like hobby, it would have to:

  1. Make them money, i.e., sell tons of units at margin
  2. Disrupt an existing industry and provide high value to Apple customers.
  3. Increase the overall attraction of Apple's ecosystem.

iOS on a 1.5-inch screen would be interesting, but would it be interesting and far along enough for Apple to bring it to market this year?

i.TV iPad App Messing Up Again

Posted: 10 Feb 2013 09:28 AM PST

iTV Search Result

The i.TV iPad app that serves as a TV guide has been my go-to app for checking out what's on TV for a long while. It's a really useful and nicely done app when it's working well.

Unfortunately, it has a pretty checkered track record when it comes to working well consistently. I find that it periodically 'forgets' my TV / Cable provider details – and of course when it does it becomes entirely useless. Usually it just takes a bit to re-enter the details for my local cable provider and the sort of subscription package I have to get it going again.

In the last week or so, the app is getting substantially worse. It's loading its pages far more slowly and forgetting my provider details often. And it has also developed a new party trick – it has my provider details right but it has 'lost' a bunch of available channels.

Editor's desk: Happy year of the water snake!

Editor's desk: Happy year of the water snake!

Gong Xi Fa Cai, Gong Hey Faat Choi, 恭禧發財! Happy year of the water snake! I spent most of my early twenties surrounded by Chinese culture, and spent many a Chinese New Year in China Town (or China block as it's probably better referred to in Montreal), on stage, taking part in the festivities and demonstrations. I even got to spend one in Hong Kong and Guangzhou. The people, the food, the fireworks, and lion dancing, all if it holds a special place in my heart and my memories.

This year I'm going to get some Dim Sum, give out some red envelopes (hey, the new iPod nano fits perfectly in those!), and pay lots of respect to those who came before and have taught and given me so much. Then I'll probably watch a bunch of martial hero movies and blog the day away. Meanwhile...

  • We're still not done with the Macworld|iWorld 2013 videos. Martin has edited and sent them all my way, and I'm uploading the last of the now. We'll get them all posted up by the end of the week. I don't want to flood the site with endless videos, so we'll stick to 2 a day so each gets the attention the app or accessory deserves.
  • Now that CES 2013 and Macworld|iWorld 2013 are behind me, I'm looking forward to GDC 2013 at the end of March. If you're a game developer and you're going to be there, let me know.
  • We might have something special before GDC as well. No spoilers. Stay tuned.
  • I'm looking at moving the iMore show back to Wednesday nights. I left it on Sunday because it seemed like, after talking for 2 hours about Apple stuff on MacBreak Weekly every Tuesday, Wednesday was too soon. If it does move back, though, we'll change up the format a bit. Let me know what you prefer.
  • Speaking of podcasts, we have Grant Paul (chpwn) coming up on this week's Debug, and a very special round-table on the future of Apple design, and skeuomorphism vs. digital authenticity on Iterate. We're also starting to put together the next Ad Hoc, and it's looking to have a very dark, very knighted forecast.
  • Jailbreak is back, baby! After almost a year of inactivity, and concerns that the days of jailbreak might be over, the evasi0n team delivered, and a huge percentage of you took the plunge. If you're one of the newly jailbroken, how are you liking it?
  • Fitness Month week 1 is now over, but thanks to it a lot of us are re-focused on our exercise regime. I did 90 minutes of Muay Thai yesterday followed by some Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and I'm reminded again how fickle cardio is. No matter how hard you work on it, the minute you stop paying attention, it leaves you. Only thing to do about is to keep doing.
  • Week 2 starts tomorrow, and it'll be all about nutrition. We'll have some more contests for you to enter, and lot more app and accessory reviews for you to enjoy. And, of course, a ton of forum threads for you to take part in. Eating clean may be harder than getting back into exercise, but let's bring it on!

Once again, to everyone who celebrates it, happy year of the water snake. If you have any great new year apps to recommend, please leave them in the comments! To everyone else, happy Sunday!

Evasi0n jailbreak tool updated to version 1.2, contains bug fixes and disables OTA updates

Posted: 10 Feb 2013 01:58 AM PST

Evasi0n jailbreak tool updated to version 1.2, contains bug fixes and disable OTA updatesThe evasi0n jailbreak tool has now been updated twice since its initial release on Wednesday. The latest version which sees it hit the 1.2 release mark contains some reasonably important enhancements. If you have been holding off jailbreaking and decide to do it today or in the near future, make sure you get the latest version.

Since release, the evad3rs team have fixed various issues with the jailbreak some of which include long reboot issues, timezone problems and the strangest one of all, the weather app appearing on iPads. A lot of people had been experiencing that last issue when jailbreaking your iPad all of a sudden the Apple stock weather app appears on your home screen.

Another important feature of the latest 1.2 release is the option of disabling OTA (Over The Air) software updates. This will prevent you from accidentally updating your iOS software when a new version gets released which would subsequently lose your jailbreak.

If you have already jailbroken your iOS 6.0 or 6.1 device with earlier versions of the Evasi0n jailbreak, there's really no need to do it again. Each of these updates are available through Cydia as an update on your device. The Evasi0n jailbreak has certainly proved popular; we heard a few days ago that Cydia had received visits from over 7 million devices since the evasi0n jailbreak release.
