CruxSKUNK iPad keyboard seeks Kickstarter funding, thinnest iPad keyboard yet

Posted: 26 Aug 2012 12:42 AM PDT

CruxSKUNK iPad keyboard seeks Kickstarter funding, thinnest iPad keyboard yetThe CruxSKUNK keyboard for iPad has appeared on Kickstarter and is looking for backing to fund its development and eventual manufacture. Forget the name, as it doesn't do this iPad accessory any justice at all and take a look at this amazingly thin keyboard that could take typing on your iPad to the next level. The CruxSKUNK keyboard is only 6mm thick which is the thinnest keyboard available for any iPad. When you put the iPad into the keyboard case, the whole package is only 19mm thick which sounds very exciting.

The CruxSKUNK maintains the simplicity of the iPad while staying true to Apple's design aesthetic. It perfectly complements the style of the iPad. In fact, most of the people we've shown the CruxSKUNK to have mistaken it for a Macbook Pro. We of course take this as a compliment since we want to give our users an experience that is seamless between the iPad and the CruxSKUNK.

The CruxSKUNK features a full-sized QWERTY keyboard. The keyboard is raised above the plane of the surrounding aluminum—which makes it extremely easy to type on. In addition, you'll be typing on a full-sized keyboard with full-sized keys. You won't have to compromise on this keyboard since all of the keys are exactly where your fingers remember. Last but not least, we've added special function keys to the top for those functions you use most often.

The CruxSKUNK connects to the iPad through Bluetooth; so once the first pairing has been done, it will always connect automatically in the future. It is powered by an inbuilt rechargeable 350mAH battery which should only need to be recharged once a month. Another innovative feature is a 360 degree hinge which allows you to swivel the iPad into a tablet like form factor without having to remove it from the keyboard case.

If you like the idea of the CruxSKUNK, you can become an early adopter with a pledge of $135 or more to secure one should they make it into production. The CruxSKUNK currently has around $61,000 of pledges and it needs to hit over $90,000 to gain enough to be funded; it still has 38 days to go. As with all of these Kickstarter projects, just because a particular item reaches its funding total doesn't guarantee it will go into production so be careful with your money.

Do you like the look of the CruxSKUNK keyboard for iPad or does the name put you of a bit?

Here comes Hurricane Isaac: Get your iPhone and iPad ready!

Posted: 25 Aug 2012 09:17 PM PDT

Some 364 days ago, we talked a little bit about how your iPhone or iPad can help you prepare for natural disasters. (At least for the ones that you have time to prepare for.) That was Hurricane Irene. Now, we've got another I-storm (excuse the pun) headed for United States, with Isaac. (And, yes, more specifically, the Gulf Coast and your's truly.)

Here are some of the tips we brought you last year, updated with some new ones.

  • Charge your iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads. Now. Keep them charged. And once the storm starts, keep them off. You'll likely lose power at some point, and there's a good chance your local cell network will go down for a bit, even with generator backups.
  • Spare batteries. You can't swap batteries in Apple products, but you can get external batteries. If you got 'em, make sure they're charged, too. If you still have time to get some, do it.
  • Car charger. Get one. Get a couple, actually.
  • After the storm, text messages may work best. If the network's up, it's going to be clogged, and calls might not go through. iMessage might not go through. Text messages have a much better chance.
  • If you're worried about damage and don't have a traditional camera, use your phone to take a few pictures of your home and your belongings. It'll make insurance claims much easier, should it come to that.
  • While you still have power and internet access, be it on your phone or broadbad, take advantage of features like instant uploading on Photo Stream, Google+, or Dropbox to make sure those pictures get somewhere that can't be destroyed by the storm. Better to be safe than sorry in that case.
  • If you just have to use Instagram during a storm, don't use a damn filter. Folks wanna see what's happening, and filters don't help that.
  • Use apps like Evernote to help keep track of your emergency supplies.
  • Before the storm, use those gas-finder apps to track down the cheapest petrol. That won't help you with the lines, but it may save you a few bucks.
  • Apps from FEMA and the Red Cross can help you find shelters and other emergency information.

Those are but a few ways your iPhone or iPad can get you through this. Have a tip you'd like to share? Let's hear 'em in the comments! And good luck, everyone. Stay safe.

Tim Cook: Year One

Tim Cook: Year One

Tim Cook became CEO of Apple one year ago yesterday, following the retirement of Steve Jobs. A soft-spoken, measured, methodical gentleman from the South, he'd been Apple's COO for years, and ran the company on several occasions during Steve Jobs' medical leaves of absence. A logistical and supply-chain genius, he took Apple from being better if more expensive, to much better at prices the competition couldn't begin to match. He helped take Apple from a computer company with a small if premium market share to a consumer electronic juggernaut that could launch products across the world at an unbelievable pace.

As CEO, over the course of the last year, Tim Cook's Apple launched the iPhone 4S, the new iPad, and the Retina MacBook Pro. They released OS X Mountain Lion and previewed iOS 6. They held the Lets Talk iPhone, the Education event, the See and Touch event, and WWDC 2012.

Cook was named one of Time's 100 most influential people. He went to Washington and to China. He spoke to Goldman Sachs and spoke at and the D10 Conference. He announced Apple would begin a new charitable matching program for employees.

He dealt with accusations over Chinese working conditions, and the odd attention of the New York Times.

They lost Steve Jobs, who co-founded the company and, through single act of will, made Apple and a part of our culture what it is today. But they've kept his legacy very much alive.

Apple's had record breaking quarter after record breaking quarter and won a $1 billion dollar verdict against Samsung.

It was a momentous year by any standards, and it was only Tim Cook's first.

Here's to year two.

iPad mini rumored to be called iPad mini, iPod nano rumored to get Wi-Fi

iPad mini rumored to be called iPad mini, iPod nano rumored to get Wi-Fi

Apple's rumored 7.85-inch iPad is colloquially referred to as the iPad mini could end up being called just that, and the iPod nano could end up getting Wi-Fi so it can access iTunes in the Cloud and the subscription iTunes Match service. This according to Macotakara

According to Asian source, the name of Apple's new product, which are expected to have 7"85' and called as iPad mini, will be named as "iPad mini" officially. This source expects that "iPad" logo will be printed on back of case same as "iPod" is printed on iPod nano and iPod touch, and it means one new product will be added on iPad's product brand genre.

iPad mini does fit with Apple's former iPod mini and current Mac mini brands. However, a lot of people are just calling it iPad mini for lack of an official name, so it's hard to tell if it's just fallen into usage, or actually been decided on. John Gruber of Daring Fireball has mentioned iPad Air, like MacBook Air, and we've gone over some other possibilities as well.

With regards to the iPod nano, it currently looks like iOS, with similar icons and rudimentary touch controls, but it doesn't run iOS. Adding Wi-Fi and hooking it into iCloud might require more than the hybrid OS it's running now. If it's getting a new design, complete with a Hone button, could it be getting an operating system overhaul as well? I have no specific information on this, but it feels like that's what would be required for significant new functionality to be added. And if they're building in a network stack and text entry, what else could it do? Wi-Fi Sync? AirPlay?

Otherwise, why not just stick with Bluetooth and make it a tethered peripheral?

Why an LTE iPhone 5 won’t be a very attractive proposition for UK consumers

Posted: 25 Aug 2012 12:22 PM PDT

Why an LTE iPhone 5 won't be a very attractive proposition for UK consumersThere has been a lot of talk over how the iPhone 5 will be a major upgrade from the current iPhone 4S. Consistent rumors point to not only a taller screen but most importantly an LTE radio.

LTE (Long Term Evolution) in very basic terms is a mobile data technology that offers very fast data. Imagine if you will, downloading data onto your iPhone at a something like 50Mbit/s in real world situations and you're getting the gist. It is probably the catalyst for iCloud and iTunes Match to really take off and on device storage to become of minor importance when you can access cloud data at those sorts of speeds. Unfortunately those of us who live in the UK look like having to wait a whole lot longer and more likely for the iPhone 6 launch before any of this will matter.

In the UK, LTE is years behind the US and most parts of Europe too, a country that usually leads in technology uptake has certainly taken a back seat with this one. The reasons why it is so far behind are very unclear and complicated. LTE in the UK is slated to operate on 800Mhz and 2.6GHz frequencies and is set to be auctioned off by the end of this year by regulator Ofcom. The auction has been delayed and delayed as carriers and Ofcom argued over the auction and now bids aren't expected until early 2013. In the meantime the rest of the world gets new handsets with super-fast downloads and we are stuck on slow 3G and GPRS is lots of areas.. After the auction has ended, you may see a bit of LTE by the end of 2013 if you are lucky and of course by then you will have an iPhone 6 too.

It's not all bad news though if you are a customer of Everything Everywhere, a merger between Orange and T-Mobile.It announced earlier this week that Ofcom had approved its license application to start deploying LTE on its current 1800MHz network from this September. It could just be a coincidence but that is also the rumored announcement time frame for the iPhone 5. If the iPhone 5 does support LTE on the 1800MHz network, Everything Everywhere could have pulled off a shrewd bit of business and stolen a significant advantage over Vodafone, O2 and 3; they will be smarting.

So that is the current dismal situation with LTE in the UK. On iPhone 5 launch day, the US and parts of Europe will be enjoying streaming without stuttering and backups that take seconds not days; the UK will look on with great jealousy. The rumored bigger screen of the iPhone 5 will ease the pain a little but data speeds are where it matters most for me.

If you're in the UK, are you disappointed with the slow progression of LTE? Would you consider leaving your current provider to join Everything Everywhere to get LTE a bit earlier?

Apple vs. Samsung juror: Knew after first day that Samsung had wronged Apple

Apple vs. Samsung juror: Knew after first day that Samsung had wronged Apple

Manuel Ilagan, one of the jurors in the landmark U.S. Apple vs. Samsung trial, which resulted in a sweeping $1 billion victory for Apple yesterday, has revealed that they, the jury, knew after the first day that Samsung had wronged Apple. The revelation comes as Ilagan began speaking to CNET's Greg Sandoval about what was going through the jury's mind during the trial and the deliberation that followed.

Well, there were several [pieces of compelling evidence]. The e-mails that went back and forth from Samsung execs about the Apple features that they should incorporate into their devices was pretty damning to me. And also on the last day they showed the pictures of the phones that Samsung made before the iPhone came out and ones that they made after iPhone came out. Some of the Samsung executives they presented on video from Korea, I thought they were dodging the questions. They didn't answer one of them. They didn't help their cause.

The jury not only found Samsung in violation of several Apple patents, but in willful violation, which could potential increase damages in the post-trial phase that follows. Samsung will try to get the decision reversed or the damages lowered, Apple will try to get Samsung devices banned and the damages as much as trebled in some areas.

While a jury in one case, in one jurisdiction can't be extrapolated into the larger, world wide Apple vs. Samsung patent dispute, the narrative Apple was able to tell, the momentum given to them by the victory, and what Ilagan is revealing about this jury's take on the strength of Apple's case should be carefully considered by all parties going forward.

CNET's interview with Manuel Ilagan is ongoing. You can follow along via the link below.

Looks Like iPad Mini Announcement & Launch Coming Later than Expected

Posted: 25 Aug 2012 10:34 AM PDT

iPad Mini

Just when I was getting all giddy about buying a lovely new iPad Mini or iPad Air or whatever Apple's smaller iPad ends up being called in the next few weeks, along comes word from those who are generally in the know that we won't be seeing an iPad Mini announcement in September.

Up until recently all the usual signs pointed to the iPad Mini being announced alongside the new iPhone at a widely expected though not yet confirmed Apple event on September 12 – with the new iPhone release following within 10 days.

In the last few days several reliable and extremely well connected sources have weighed in suggesting that's not the case – and that the iPad Mini will not share the stage or steal any thunder from the iPhone launch, but instead will be announced at Apple's traditional music + iPod event in early October. John Gruber at Daring Fireball first suggested this approach would be the most likely, then Jim Dalrymple at Loop Insight gave his nod of confirmation by quoting the salient excerpt of Gruber's piece and saying "Oh that Gruber is a smart fellow".

The rational, semi grown-up side of me thinks this all makes perfect sense. The new iPhone and the iPad Mini don't compete for center stage at a single announcement event and don't compete quite so strongly with each other for customer dollars with at least a number of weeks between their respective release dates – and both still come out well in time to get the most out of the holiday season.

Expert: Quick verdict in Apple trial doesn't mean jury shirked its duty It may have been surprising that the jury in the Samsung-Apple trial returned a verdict after just three days of deliberations, but Roy Futterman, director at DOAR Litigation Consulting and a clinical psychologist who works on trial strategies and the mindset of jurors, says it appeared that the nine-person panel did its job.

TED Talks App Updated – Adds More Talks & Radio Feeds

Posted: 25 Aug 2012 08:23 AM PDT

TED Talks iPad app

The TED Talks app for iPad and iOS has been updated this week, to Version 1.8.1. This is the official app for the wonderful series of TED Talks, which are described as Riveting talks by remarkable people, free to the world.

The highlight of this update is more great content, in the form of new and previously unavailable TED Ed and TEDx talks and also new TED Radio Hour audio feeds.

This is one app where more content is always better, because it's just great quality content. The new audio feeds are easily accessible via a single tap on the Listen button at the top right of the app's main screen.

Here's the remainder of the change list for this update:

• Fixes a launch-time crash on certain configurations
• Direct links into TED talks from Facebook
• Performance and stability improvements

TED is one of my all-time favorite iPad apps and one of the selections in our list of the Top 25 Best Free iPad Apps. It's great to see adding more content and features.

Here's an App Store link for TED; it remains a free app and a universal app designed for both iPad and iPhone.
