In-app purchases now account for a staggering 76% of App Store revenue according to report

In-app purchases now account for a staggering 76% of App Store revenue according to reportLove them or hate them, in-app purchases look here to stay. According to a report from Distimo, in-app purchases now account for a staggering 76% of App Store revenue as of February 2013. This has seen a huge increase since January 2012, where in-app purchases accounted for just 53% of revenue.

In-app purchases (IAP) now generate the majority of the revenue in the app stores. This has been the case for some time now, and it continues to rise. In-app purchases generated only 53% of revenue in the Apple App Store for iPhone in January 2012 in the U.S., but generated a record 76% in February 2013 clearly demonstrating the success of this monetization method.

The report goes on to examine ARP (average revenue per download) and it makes interesting reading too. The average for free apps that offer in-app purchase came in at $0.93 per app, straight forward paid apps came in at $2.25 but taking the prize, paid apps with in-app purchases with an ARP of around $2.40. The average cost of all apps for the iPhone is just $0.99.

Another interesting point to note from the report is that Japan is way out in front when it comes to in-app purchases. The United States, United Kingdom and Germany are all reasonably level but Japan shows more than double the amount of in-app purchases compared to the others.

You can read the full report over at Distimo and also view graphs showing all of the information that it has collated. Love them or hate them, in-app purchases look set to play a major part in apps now and in the future.

How do you feel about the in-app purrchase model?

Haunted Hollow makes spooking competitive

Posted: 30 Mar 2013 05:09 PM PDT

Firaxis, best known for their work on the popular XCOM and Civilization games, are jumping into mobile with their first iPad title, Haunted Hollow. We checked it out at GDC 2013 with their publisher 2K, and it's shaping up to be really interesting. Two players face off at opposite ends of an unsuspecting village in large haunted mansions. Each player takes turns summoning monsters, sending them to the town, and scaring its hapless inhabitants. In the process, players gather fear points which are used to expand their mansion and create bigger baddies, and in turn control new neighborhoods of the village. Players also have to create some more aggressive monsters to fend off the opposing player's and the town's angry mob which invariably rises up against the haunted houses. The player which controls the whole town with fear wins.

Haunted Hollow is free to play, but players can pay to unlock new families of haunted houses, each with their own unique flavor and abilities. That set-up, along with the asynchronous multiplayer, reminded me an awful lot of Hero Academy, and that's generally a good thing. It helps that the game is very family-friendly, so you can pass-and-play in the living room.

Haunted Hollow is currently enjoying a soft launch in Canada, and expanding internationally this spring. Any takers?

iMore Editors' Choice: Magicka, Pokémon TV, Llumino, and more

iMore Editors' Choice: Magicka, Pokémon TV, Llumino, and more

Every week, the editors and writers at iMore carefully select some of our favorite, most useful, most extraordinary apps, accessories, gadgets, and websites. This week's selections include a few games, a Mac app for developers, a companion app for Apple TV, a calculator, and an app for Pokémon fans.

Kami Retro - Chris Oldroyd

This week, as it's my final ever Pick of the Week, I have gone for a fun retro game. Kami Retro is a hugely entertaining platform game with vivid colors awesome music and fun game play.

The game combines the normal platform type running and jumping with a line drawing strategy that keeps the game interesting as well as challenging. The game reminds me a bit of Mario but it is also very different too.

If you fancy a game with 8 bit graphics mixed in with some classic platform type entertainment then Kami Reto may be right up your street. For the forty something audience among us, this game is sure to hit the spot and bring that old school gaming feel to your iPhone.

Magicka - Joseph Keller

Magicka is fun fantasy-action game with a sense of humor. The game sees you take control of a Master Wizard battling against monsters out of Norse mythology. This take on the original Magicka, released for PC in 2011, keeps the spellcasting and four-player co-op of the original. Gameplay consists of casting spells of various type, such as fire, lightning, water, and ice. These spells can be combined to form more powerful spells. For instance, hitting fire once, then lightning twice, then fire once again produces a very powerful thunderbolt. You can buy a new staff or robe for your wizard using coins that you earn from completing levels. You can enter multiplayer mode with three other players through Paradox's own multiplayer system, rather than Game Center. If you're looking for a solid action game with a sense of humor, check Magicka for iPad out.

Deploymate for Xcode - Rene Ritchie

Allow me to hand this pick of the week over to Luc Vandal of Edovia for a moment:

Any developer serious about his work is using Deploymate.

And now a word from Jury, former developer evangelist at Apple:

At $19.99, Deploymate is an absolute steal. It would be money well spent at 5 times that price. Think about it. Is $20, $40, or even $100 worth it to you to avoid a failed launch or being at the mercy of an expedited app review? I'm pretty sure it is.

Here's why: There are multiple generations of iOS devices out there, not all of which are compatible with the latest version of iOS. Instead of accidentally using a new API when targeting an older device or OS version, and risking bugs, crashes, or rejection by Apple, Deploymate will ingest your code and spit out warning flags for anything problematic. You fix it in Xcode, run it through Deploymate again, repeat until clean, and then submit to the App Store.

There's even a free demo.

Remote - Ally Kazmucha

If there is one product that Apple released that I absolutely detest, it's the stupid little silver remotes that came with Macs for the longest time and that still come standard with Apple TV. They get lost easily in couch cushions, underneath beds, and anywhere else they make their way to. I can't tell you how many times while watching the Apple TV in bed, it's gotten tangled in sheets or under blankets making it impossible to find without ripping apart the entire bed, even for a ninja.

That being said, there are numerous times that if I don't see that stupid little remote immediately, I reach for my iPhone or iPad and launch the remote app. Not only can it control one Apple TV, but all the ones we own in our home. I can change tracks on the living room TV from any room, anytime. Not to mention entering text with the physical remote is painful. The virtual Remote app makes it a breeze when searching for media and browsing YouTube or Hulu.

If you own an Apple TV, it's a must have.

Pokémon TV - Chris Parsons

If you happened to grow up in the 90's then you no doubt have heard of Pokémon. Many years after their first appearance in 1996, people are still crazy over Pokémon and that's moved through several generations now as new fans are tuned into Pokémon. My 9-year-old son loves the cartoons and that brings me to my choice for this week. Pokémon TV is free to download, powered by the Cartoon Network and it allows you to view full length Pokémon episodes plus, it also contains some video content not found elsewhere. If you're a Pokémon fan or have kids who enjoy Pokémon, this is a simple pick.

Llumino - Leanna Lofte

I'm a mathematician and love bright, colorful things, so it's only natural that I adore the new iPhone calculator Llumino. This gorgeous piece of software is basic calculator with style. It features 6 button effects and three color schemes that make your eyes dance when making simple calculations. You can also create your own color schemes to make this calculator fit you and your style.

Not only are the button effects and colors a lot of fun, but so are the subtle movements in the display. As you make calculations, the digits slide into place, fade out of view, and just emanate elegance and style. For example, when hitting the percent button, the decimal point stays visible as it slides two places to the left.

Llumino may not be a full-feature scientific or graphing calculator, but since most of the calculations I need to do in everyday life are basic, Llumino is the prefect replacement for Apple's built-in Calculator.

Your choice?

Now that we've chosen our favorites for the week, we want to hear yours! Did you pick up a killer app, accessory, or game this week? Let us know in the comments below!

iPad at Work: in a Tesla Showroom

Posted: 30 Mar 2013 02:34 PM PDT

iPad Tesla point of sale

Today I saw an iPad at work in a Tesla showroom here in Austin. The iPad is being used as a sort of point-of-sale device – even though the showroom can't actually sell you a Tesla in the state of Texas.

My father-in-law (Dan) and I spent quite a while in the Tesla showroom today. I'm not generally a person who gets very excited about cars, but even I have to say the Tesla model we saw was nothing short of awesome. Dan sat in the car and we both ended up thoroughly impressed with it.

I was also impressed with seeing the iPad in use of course. Hit the break for a couple more shots of the iPad and the showroom …

Tesla Showroom

The showroom itself is a very nicely designed space that shows the cars off well.

Here's a look at some Tesla iPad wallpaper:

Thanks to Lauren and all the friendly staff at Tesla today.

Editor's desk: Thank you Chris!

Editor's desk: Thank you Chris!

Chris Oldroyd joined iMore in October of 2010, coming to us from a place in the UK that looked more like old BBC dramas than the hustle-and-bustle of modern-day London. Since then he's been getting up at the break of dawn -- Eastern Time, I think that translates into sometime after elevensies, UK time -- and posting whatever interesting news, apps, or accessories had come across the wire over night. (Literally -- his internet was so bad for so long we had to string an actual wire to his castle.)

Funny, classy, and the soul of stability, Chris has made iMore a better, more enjoyable, and more memorable place ever since. And, sadly, tomorrow will be his last day with us. Chris' work and his family has gotten to the point where they need his attention more than we do, and gentleman that he is he knows where his priorities lie.

We'll miss Chris. I'll miss Chris.

For everything you've done for us, and for everything you mean to us, thank you and farewell!

Going forward, you can still follow and reach Chris via @chrisoldroyd. Be sure to tease him about his football soccer picks!

Dungeon Hunter 4 hacking and slashing its way onto iOS this April

Posted: 30 Mar 2013 12:09 PM PDT

Iron Man 3 wasn't the only title Gameloft was showing off at GDC 2013; they also had Dungeon Hunter 4, which promises to be a great addition to their fantasy action-RPG family. Though the game remains free-to-play with optional in-app purchases for some items, Dungeon Hunter 4 has a greater focus single player campaign (while DH3 was more about quick-and-dirty arena matches). DH4 has clearly upped the ante in terms of graphics, too. Character models are more detailed, lighting effects are dramatic, and overall, the whole thing plays very smoothly.

Players work their way through a linear storyline, slaying all manner of monsters using one of four different character classes and their unique special abilities. As they progress, new powers are unlocked and new gear is picked up and upgraded. Players can hook up online for co-operative of competitive multiplayer. Sure, the hack-and-slash gameplay might not be a massive departure from what you're used to, but you know what they say: if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Keep an eye out for Dungeon Hunter 4 when it hits the App Store this April.

Third Eye Crime - a unique mix of pathfinding gameplay and film noir

Posted: 30 Mar 2013 10:17 AM PDT

Third Eye Crime is a promising puzzle game for iOS that we got to spend some time playing at GDC 2013. Players have to guide a thief through a maze filled with security guards without getting caught. Sounds simple, right? Wait until you see how many guards there are later on in the game and how big their guns are. Luckily, your character can read minds, so you can see where guards have visibility, and around which corners they think you are. To keep things interesting, each level has a comic book style interstitial which tells the game's chilling tale of intrigue.

Though the premise of a psychic art burglar in a film noir graphic novel setting is a little out there, the developer explained that it really came from a common artificial intelligence mechanic. Basically, when you play any game with AI opponents, these visibility cones and pathfinding maps already exist in some capacity, except they're typically hidden in the background. By explicitly showing these regions, levels can be made much more difficult, and some might say interesting.

I'm pretty excited to try out Third Eye Crime when it comes out in early June. 80 - 90 levels should be plenty to chew on for awhile.  What do you guys think?

Best Free iPad App of the Week: Reuters

Reuters iPad app

Who doesn't like free? And who doesn't like great iPad apps? When the two come together it's great stuff. With that in mind, we offer up a quick review of an excellent free iPad app each week.

This week's pick is Reuters, a superb new iPad app from one of the world's leading news agencies.

The App Store description for Reuters is about as short and sweet as you can get:

Reuters' iOS app brings you the latest reporting and market data from the world's most trusted news organization.

I'm not sure why but I expected a Reuters news app to be quite drab, and boy was I wrong. This app has one of the cleanest, most elegant user interfaces for an iPad news app that I've ever seen. It's a real pleasure to use, and I'm finding that the more I use it the more I love enjoy the UI.

Reuters iPad app

The app's main home page, and the home pages for each of its main sections, have...

How to disable lock screen notifications for specific Passbook cards

How to disable lock screen notifications for specific Passbook cards

If you use Passbook frequently on your iPhone, you may have noticed that certain passes use your location in order to give you easy access on your lock screen to a specific pass when you're within the vicinity. Some of those passes may contain personal information or allow for someone to charge an item to a gift card or account.

If you'd like to prevent unauthorized access to your passes, you can easily do so within Passbook. Follow along and we'll show you how.

  1. Launch the Passbook app on the Home screen of your iPhone.
  2. Find the pass that uses location services to show on your lock screen and bring it up.
  3. Tap the Info button that is represented by a lowercase "i" in the bottom right hand corner to flip the pass over.
  4. You'll see an option for Show On Lock Screen. Turn this setting to Off.

That particular pass will no longer show up on your lock screen when you're within the vicinity. Alternately, you can always disable access to Passbook from the lock screen to take care of any concerns you may have with unauthorized use.

Dolphin Browser for iPad Updated – Support for Up to 20 Open Tabs?

Posted: 30 Mar 2013 08:30 AM PDT

Dolphin Browser for iPad

Dolphin Browser for iPad was updated yesterday, to Version 6.3. The very first listed improvement in this update is support for a maximum of 20 open tabs (on the iPad 2 and above).

Oddly, this new feature is not working for me thus far. I've installed the update on my iPad mini and my iPad 3 – and neither of them will open more than 9 tabs in Dolphin Browser for iPad. When I tap to add a 10th tab I always see the same error: 'Careful, too many tabs will slow down the performance of the browser'. There's nothing I can see in the app's settings to get past this. I've tried rebooting my iPads and manually quitting all other apps, but I still get the same result. Maybe I'm missing something, but for right now I can't make this feature work.

Here's the full change list for this update:

1. Support a maximum of 20 open tabs on iPad 2 and above devices
2. Improved...
