iPad By Davis: “Apple kicks off AppStore vanity URL” plus 6 more

iPad By Davis: “Apple kicks off AppStore vanity URL” plus 6 more

Apple kicks off AppStore vanity URL

Posted: 03 Feb 2013 07:56 PM PST

In the midst of the Super Bowl advertising frenzy, Apple quietly started introducing AppStore.com as a URL shortener for a trailer of the upcoming Star Trek movie. The official App Store Twitter account has been using tw.AppStore.com since it started, so this will shave off a few characters there once they fully switch over. It's a subtle change and one most iOS fans will barely notice, but those extra characters allow developers a bit more wriggle room with how they use the second half of that URL or the description they use in the tweet. It's also one less tidbit for folks to remember when manually punching the address. Apparently the AppStore.com URL was a gift from Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff to Steve Jobs back in 2008.

Editor's desk: Goodbye Macworld|iWorld, hello fitness month!

Posted: 03 Feb 2013 11:48 AM PST

I'm sitting at San Francisco airport, staring out over runways and mountains untouched by the cold or snow that await me at home, remembering with fondness the sights and sounds, products and people of Macworld|iWorld 2013, and already looking forward to next year. But that's then and this is now. And right now, it's February and that means it's fitness month, Mobile Nations post-CES, iMore's post-Macworld-iWorld tradition. And it's all shades of kick-in-your-ass awesome.

The core idea is this: After the holidays, we all have the best of intentions and hit January with more activity, cleaner eating, better rest, and overall healthier lifestyles than any other time of the year. Then life smacks us in the face. Hard. And we go right back to the same bad habits we chided ourselves about for the entirety of the year before.

That's why we chose February for fitness month. January is done. Win, lose, or draw, we get a second chance. And thanks to the iPhone and iPad, and all the apps and accessories that have come out, all the new technologies that have let us improve our exercise, improve our nutrition, maximize our rest and recovery, and make ourselves healthy, we get a really, really good chance. Especially when you factor in the power of our communities.

So, starting tomorrow, we'll be posting a bunch of app reviews, accessory reviews, contests, podcasts, and other great content. Starting tomorrow, we'll be working together to make fitness month the best, most fun, most successful event of the mobile year.

We'd love for you to join us, so check back tomorrow morning and get ready to get it in gear.

Green Shapes iPad wallpaper

Today's iPad wallpaper choices are a few more created shapes and patterns created with the excellent Deko app. I've only had this app for a couple weeks, but I love it and I'm getting lots of good use out of it. It's just so easy to create new wallpapers for your iPad with this app.

First up this week is the image shown above, which I'm calling Green Shapes.

Next is Blue Green Sections. I think this one feels both subtle and somehow a bit striking on the iPad home screen:

Finally, here's Subtle Blues & Greens, which I think is a very nice subtle, soft background for the iPad:

I've added these three to our iPad Insight Flickr group. The group has grown tremendously over the last 6 months or so and now features lots of great iPad wallpapers and also a lot of incredible artwork created on iPads. Give it a look when you have some time, and share some of your...

Oopsmark USB Wrist Cuffs at Macworld|iWorld 2013

Posted: 03 Feb 2013 09:43 AM PST

Jesse Herbert of oopsmark was making leather wine carriers you could sling from a bicycle when an idea struck him -- he could use the leftover bits of leather to make accessories. But not just any accessories -- smart accessories. Somewhere between steampunk and cyberpunk, came a set of wrist cuffs with USB keys stowed on them.

At Macworld|iWorld 2013 Jesse showed us his work and told us his story.

No iMore show tonight, but tons of videos to come!

No iMore show tonight, but tons of videos to come!

No iMore show tonight, as I'll be on a plane jetting back to the east coast. However, I shot a goodbye to Macworld|iWorld video last night just as the show was ending, and we'll get that into the show feed asap. We also have a dozen or more videos to finish uploading and posting for you, so while our trip here is ending, sharing it has only just begun.

Show's back as normal next week.

Real Racing 3 shows off its unique Time Shifted Multiplayer gaming feature

Posted: 03 Feb 2013 06:26 AM PST

Firemonkeys, the development team behind the Real Racing franchise have just updated fans with another of their Developer Diaries. The third Developer Diary takes a detailed look at Time Shifted Multiplayer gaming which is a unique feature of this particular game. Not only can you see it in action, you also get a nice feel for how impressive this title is going to be when it finally arrives.

The Firemonkeys discuss a revolutionary new way to play with friends using Time Shifted Multiplayer technology in the third developer diary for Real Racing 3.

With Real Racing 3's Time Shifted Multiplayer (TSM) you can race anyone, anytime, even if they're offline! Every single career event is filled with the fully interactive AI controlled time shift doubles of your Game Center or Facebook friends, as well as other players from around the world.

The last we heard, Real Racing 3 was due to hit the App Store sometime in February. If that is still the case we won't have to wait much longer to get our hands on it. I am sure you will agree Real Racing 3 looks like becoming the best racing game for iPhone and iPad. I can't wait to get hold of it.
