Grand Theft Auto: Vice City teaser trailer released, game coming next week

Posted: 02 Dec 2012 12:33 AM PST

Rockstar Games has released a short teaser trailer for its soon to be released remake of the hugely popular Grand Theft Auto: Vice City game which will be available for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The game will be released to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the games original release on the Sony Playstation 2 back in 2002. It will feature native high resolution graphics including Retina enhancements, lighting effects, new firing and targeting options and much more.

To commemorate the anniversary of Vice City and its mobile release on December 6th for select iOS and Android devices, please enjoy this new nostalgia-filled Anniversary Video celebrating a decade since the original game's launch.

The trailer should whet your appetite, if it actually needs whetting for a big release like this one. Personally I can't wait to get my hands on this and if it is done as well as the previous version of GTA on iPad it will be another special game. Thankfully we won't have to wait much longer for its release. The magic date is December 6th, that's right, just four more days to go. The pricing has already been set at $4.99; so it's going to be well worth that price. Who else is excited about this one?

iMore Editors' Choice for December 1, 2012

iMore Editors' Choice for December 1, 2012

Every week, the editors and writers at iMore carefully select some of our favorite, most useful, most extraordinary apps, accessories, gadgets, and websites. This week's selections include package delivery tracker, a Twitter client for iPhone, a news aggregator, a fighting game, and an app that helps you keep track of your Holiday wish list.

Twittelator Neue - Ally Kazmucha

While I'm a hardcore Tweetbot fan, I still tend to get bored using the same Twitter client day in and day out. It's just how I've always been when it comes to Twitter. My trusty standby has been Twittelator Neue for quite a while now. It's got one of the most gorgeous interfaces that I've ever seen in a Twitter client. Not only that, it isn't your standard timeline and highlighting, it's got a style all of its own.

Whether you are actively looking for a new Twitter client or just want to switch things up for a change, Twittelator Neue should definitely be on your list to check out.

Wavii - Joseph Keller

Wavii is a news aggregation app that came about last year, but it received an big update earlier this week, and if you haven't taken a look at it before, now is a good time. Wavii feeds you articles based on a combination of stories you have liked in the past, topics and people you have decided to follow, as well as your friends that are also using the service. Previously, Wavii required a Facebook account to use, but as of the 2.0 update, it now allows for signup via Twitter as well as email registration. Wavii is a free download.

Delivery Status touch - Rene Ritchie

Over a month ago I ordered an iPad mini + LTE from Apple. This week it finally shipped. Immediately I went to Delivery Status touch, chose Apple, entered my order ID and email address, and now tracking that package is only ever a few taps away.

Good looking, functional, but not fussy, Delivery Status touch is a utility for me in the best sense of the word. It gets things done without getting in the way. I don't order a lot any more (would that I lived in a country with Amazon Prime, or, you know, decent Amazon service of any kind…), but when I do, as soon as it ships, it's out of my inbox, off my mind, and in Delivery Status touch.

Street Fighter X Tekken Mobile - Chris Parsons

For fighting game fans, the mashup of franchises is always fun to see. Recently, I've dug into Street Fighter X Tekken considering it's on sale for $.99 and was pleasantly surprised with the game. It's your typical button masher but it's graphically done well and offers some great ways to play. You can have 2-on-2 tag battles and even go online to play against others who are matched with your skill. With recent updates that added new characters and improvements to how the game controls are handled, it's a pretty great time waster. I must warn though, there is no iPhone 5 support as of yet.

I Want Wish List - Leanna Lofte

Christmas is right around the corner which means you may be hearing the "what do you want for Christmas?" question from your friends and family. If you're like me, the only things you can think of off the top of your head are ridiculously expensive items that you wouldn't dare ask for as a gift. I Want Wish List is an app to help you keep track of all the different items that you want and share with whoever you want.

For parents, this is an awesome app to have your kids download on their iPhone or iPod touch because they'll have a lot of fun adding stuff to their list and then you can keep their list with you wherever you go.

If you aren't the type to give a list to your family and friends, I Want Wish List is also great for keeping private. I always forget the different little things that I want, so I Want Wish List is great for me to reference when I may have a little extra money to spend (like with gift cards I might get for Christmas).

Your choice?

Now that we've chosen our favorites for the week, we want to hear yours! Did you pick up a killer app, accessory, or game this week? Let us know in the comments below!

Get a free kids app every day until Christmas with WeWantApps! for iPhone and iPad

Posted: 01 Dec 2012 03:14 PM PST

WeWantApps!, the app that helps you find great apps for your kids, was recently updated in preparation for today, December 1, and the beginning of its advent calendar that offers a normally paid app for free every day until Christmas Day.

If you have kids, there's no reason not to pick up WeWantApps. It's one of my go to apps when looking for something for my daughter as it does a great job of curating the App Store and finding great deals. The advent calendar is just the cherry on top.

Today's deal is Nighty Night! HD - Winter Edition, an app that I highly recommend. In fact, I recently chose Nighty Night! as my pick of the week in a recent Editors' Choice column because of how much my daughter loves it and how much I love it as a bedtime story. It's normally $2.99, so you definitely want to grab this one while it's free.

Ally's gift picks: 2012 holiday guide

Ally's gift picks: 2012 holiday guide

This season we're asking everyone here at iMore to share some of their favorite gift ideas. Sure, there'll be iPhone, iPad, and Mac apps and accessories included on everyones' lists, just as you'd expect, but there'll also be other stuff, great, geeky, gorgeous other stuff that's as multi-facted and fun as the people themselves. It's my turn and I've found a couple must-haves for the gadget fanatics you'll be shopping for this year.

Apple TV

Out of all the Apple devices that we've got floating around in our home, our Apple TV probably gets just as much use as our iPhones. It makes everything from streaming Netflix and Hulu to accessing your purchased content super simple. When we have friends and family over it's simple to share YouTube videos from our iPhones, iPads, and other devices straight to the larger screen.

This year's Apple TV offers full 1080p making the viewing experience even better. There isn't a day that goes by that we don't use our Apple TV whether it's to stream music, access purchased movies, rent content, browse YouTube, or stream our favorite shows on Netflix and Hulu. At only $99, it's a no brainer if you've got a friend or relative that already utilizes other Apple products in their home. It'll make the perfect add-on companion and they'll love you for it.

Mophie Powerstation

I've never been a fan of battery cases since they add so much bulk. Other solutions like the Mophie Powerstation not only give you a portable way to charge your iPhone (or any smartphone for that matter), but other devices as well. Since the input is simply USB, you can use your existing cables and charge whatever you'd like. Share it with friends, and pass it around.

If you know someone who is always complaining about battery life, the Mophie Powerstation makes a great gift regardless what smartphone or tablet they have. They also pack a lot more power than a standard battery case backup can which means more charges.

Lifeproof for iPhone

Running a business that specializes in iPhone, iPad, and iPod repair means I see a lot of water damaged devices. Lifeproof cases, if installed correctly, can eliminate water damage 100% of the time. If you have a friend or family member who is particularly clumsy with their iPhone, a Lifeproof case can make a great gift.

Parents can also rest assured that if they're buying an iPhone for a child this Christmas that their investment will be protected. Not only does Lifeproof protect against liquid damage, it also provides a fair amount of protection against drops.

iPad mini

When I first purchased my iPad mini I honestly did not think I'd ever use it. I figured I'd leave it at the office for work use but continue to use my iPad 3 like always. Boy was I wrong.

I've never found a way to actually integrate the iPad into my daily life other than writing on it while out of the office and I only ever did that when a computer wasn't within reach. While I still prefer the standard size iPad with my keyboard case for writing, literally everything else is better on the iPad mini. I've actually found myself browsing on it a lot more than I ever did on any other iPad I've owned. The size is perfect for reading in bed or in a car and casually surfing the web on the couch.

The iPad mini has become my go-to device for browsing, reading, playing games, and reading emails while my iPad 3 has remained at the office for heavier stuff. If you have a loved one who desperately wants an iPad for personal use, you can't go wrong with the iPad mini.

Nokia Lumia 920

I've never been a huge fan of the Android platform and the first few iterations of Windows Phone didn't really pique my interest but I've always been a fan of Nokia hardware back to the N95. It is still one of my favorite phones I've ever owned to date. It was amazing for its time.

Windows Phone has come a long way in my opinion and Nokia makes some of the best hardware and mobile cameras in the industry and the Nokia Lumia 920 is no exception. Everything from the screen to the camera to wireless charging makes it one of the best Windows Phone offerings to date.

While I have no intention of giving up my iPhone 5, there are people out there that don't want Apple products in their ecosystem. If you've got someone in your life that's really hoping for a new phone this holiday season but they don't want an iPhone, I'm positive they'd be glad to receive a Lumia 920. You can pick one up unlocked and contract free for $599 or on contract with AT&T for as little as $99.

Samsung spending ludicrous amounts of money to advertise Galaxy phones against Apple and the iPhone

Samsung spending ludicrously amounts of money to advertise Galaxy phones against Apple and the iPhone

What does it take to try and push more Samsung Galaxy devices than Apple iPhones and iPads? An incredible amount of advertising and marketing money, apparently. When compared not only to Apple and Microsoft, but even ad-heavy companies like Coca Cola, Samsung's run rate looks even more ludicrously large. Horace Dediu of Asymco put together the following chart:

While Apple isn't spending anything close to what Samsung is in advertising, Apple has an iconic brand and enormous mind-share. What's more interesting is wondering how other Android manufacturers, ones that don't have the ancillary businesses Samsung has, and can't spend as much on advertising as Samsung can, will keep up?

What happens when Samsung becomes synonymous with Android? Is that better or worse, competitively, for Apple?

Check out the rest of Dediu's article for more charts and analysis.

Angry Birds Seasons updates for 2012 Holiday season

Posted: 01 Dec 2012 12:05 PM PST

It's December 1, which means the new Angry Birds Seasons update is out with a new level every day until Christmas Day -- like an advent calendar.

It's a snowy winter night, the northern lights are ablaze, and it seems like peace on earth… until the bad piggies show up! The Angry Birds didn't realize that they're walking in a winter wonderham!

The 25 new levels will take place in a snowy winter landscape under the aurora borealis and there is also a new ice element that will surely make you slip and slide. In addition to the 25 levels in the advent calendar, there are also three secret levels that can be unlocked for some special wintry treats. Lastly, there is a special Harbin level in honor of the upcoming Angry Birds area in the Ice and Snow World in Harbin, China.

It's important to note that in order to access each new daily level, you need to have an internet connection enabled.

We are receiving many reports of the new update only causing the game to crash at launch. I am not experiencing this issue on my iPad 3, so it isn't affecting everyone. If you've updated to the latest version of Angry Birds Seasons and are experiencing constant crashing, please let us know in the comments below as well as which device you are using to play.

If the game is running great for you, let us know what you think! Personally, I love the advent calendar style of Angry Birds Seasons because I'm not tempted to advance to the next level and instead take time to get three stars on them all. Now excuse me while I continue playing the first level as I have only earned 2 stars so far.

Ad hoc 2: Skyfall

Take a bunch of Apple and tech geeks who also happen to enjoy a shaken -- not stirred! -- Bond flick, put them in front of mics, hit the record button, and what do you get? Another impromptu episode of Her Majesty's secret podcast, that's what.

Join Georgia, Dieter Bohn, Serenity Caldwell, Guy English, Dave Wiskus, and me to talk some Skyfall. From Aston Martins to ass-kickings, cinematography to sex, meta to misogyny, gadgets to gaffs, we're nerding out over, and nitpicking, Bond. James Bond.

How to use Up Next in iTunes 11

Posted: 01 Dec 2012 09:46 AM PST

How to use Up Next in iTunes 11

Up Next is a great new feature in iTunes 11 that lets you quickly and easily stage songs you want to listen to shortly, without killing the song or playlist that's already playing. The idea is that it gives you a secondary queue where you can add songs as the mood strikes you, or remove them if you change your mind, and they'll be seamlessly inserted into the flow of you music with interruption. And you can add, edit, or clear them whenever you like.

How to add songs to Up Next

  1. Launch iTunes 11 on your Mac or PC.
  2. Find the song that you'd like iTunes to play next and right click on the title.
  3. Click on Add to Up Next.
  4. That's it. Your song has been added to Up Next. After it plays, it will disappear from the list on its own.

It's worth noting that as you add songs to Up Next, they'll be played in the order you added them. The last song you added will be the last song in the Up Next list. You can, however, change the order however you'd like. To find out how, keep on reading.

How to access the Up Next playlist

  1. Launch iTunes 11 on your Mac or PC.
  2. Hover over the top section where you see the Apple logo or the title of the currently playing song.
  3. You will see a list icon off to the right hand side. Click on it to drop down the Up Next playlist.

How to edit or clear out songs in Up Next

iTunes 11 also gives you the ability to edit, manage, and delete songs from your Up Next playlist as well.

  1. Launch iTunes 11 on your Mac or PC.
  2. Hover over the top section where you see the Apple logo or the title of the currently playing song.
  3. You will see a list icon off to the right hand side. Click on it to drop down the Up Next playlist.
  4. You can click on the grey x to delete songs or on the clear button to clear the entire Up playlist.
  5. You can also drag titles around to change their order in the Up Next playlist if you wish.

How to re-add previously played tracks to Up Next

If you previously added a song to Up Next and it has already played and disappeared, there's an easier way to re-add it than digging through your library again.

  1. Launch iTunes 11 on your Mac or PC.
  2. Hover over the top section where you see the Apple logo or the title of the currently playing song.
  3. You will see a list icon off to the right hand side. Click on it to drop down the Up Next playlist.
  4. Click on the Clock icon that appears next to the Clear option.
  5. Here you'll see a list of all the songs you've previously added to Up Next. Hover over any one of them with your mouse and you'll see a + sign appear to the left of the title. Click on it to add it to the Up Next playlist again.
