Weekly Photo Contest: Panoramas with iOS 6!

Posted: 20 Sep 2012 12:31 AM PDT

One of the huge new features of iOS 6 is the ability to take panoramic photographs with the built-in camera app and what a better excuse to use it than to enter iMore's next photo contest! The only rule for this contest is that you must use Apple's new built-in panorama feature in iOS 6 to take the photo -- the subject matter is completely up to you. Just be creative and, most importantly, have lots of fun!

The prize: $30 iTunes gift certificate

In addition to a thumbs up from the iMore crew and all of us yelling about how great of a photo star you are, the winner of this week's photography contest will receive a $30 iTunes gift certificate allowing you to stock up on some of those photography apps you've been dying to buy!

The rules

The rules of entry are very simple. The photo must have been taken with an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch (we'll check the EXIF data of the original file to verify) using the built-in panorama feature of iOS 6 and any edits must have been done with an iPhone or iPad app. No Photoshop CS6! If you have external lens accessories you are more than welcome to use them. You can submit as many photos as you'd like, but remember, this is a contest, so make sure you submit your best work!

Resources

Now, before you run off to take your photo, remember that it's not technical skill alone that will claim this prize. Even if you're not the best photographer (yet!), a great eye and a great subject can still get you the win.

However, a little help can never hurt, so make sure you check out these articles from our iPhone photography series for some tips.

How to submit

Submitting your photos is easy. just head over to the iMore Photography Forum and post your photos to the official contest thread. Don't forget to state which apps, if any, you used to edit your photo!

That's it! Now go out and shoot!

iWork apps Pages, Numbers, and Keynote for iPhone and iPad update with sharing to other apps

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 06:36 PM PDT

Apple has pushed out an update to their iWork suite consisting of Pages, Numbers, and Keynote that not only bring support for iOS 6, but also add the ability to open your documents in another app. When you go to Share and Print, "Open in Another App" is now an option. You'll be able to choose between Apple's format (Pages, Numbers, Keynote), Microsoft's format (Word, Excel, Powerpoint), or PDF and the apps that support the chosen format will be available.

Before this feature was available, users would have to use the workaround of emailing the document to themselves and then opening it in the app of their choice. It's great to see Apple prioritize the usability of their apps. Even though this was the only thing new added to Pages, Numbers, and Keynote, I'm pretty excited about this update. How about you?

iOS 6 App Updates Coming Thick & Fast Now

iOS 6 App Updates

And here they come. Looks like there's quite the torrent of iOS 6 iPad app updates today. On the day of the iOS 6 release, it looks like the App Store review team is perhaps churning out the approvals as I'm certainly seeing a good number of updates for the the new version of iOS today.

My updates badge on my iPad jumped from 40 to 59 just within the last couple hours. I know, that's a huge number of updates – but I do updates just about weekly, but when you continually have 200+ apps on the iPad they can stack up pretty quickly at times. Times like today.

Among the new iOS 6 iPad app updates I'm seeing are a number of Apple's own app, including Pages, Numbers, Keynote, Airport Utility, Podcasts, iTunes U, and iPhoto – with what looks like a massive update.

I expect the flood of iOS 6 app updates will continue for at least a few days now. Are you seeing this flurry of new app updates on your iPads?

iOS 6 for iPad Is Out Now

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 10:26 AM PDT

ios6

iOS 6 – the latest annual major update to the iPad (and all iDevices) operating system – is out now, available to download and install.

You can update to iOS 6 over the air (if you are currently running iOS 5) or when connected to a PC and iTunes.

iOS 6 brings a total of over 200 new features, including a number of notable new features for the iPad.

I imagine Apple's update servers will be getting hammered for at least the next few hours, so if you have the patience you might want to wait until this evening to update.

I've been running the developers Gold Master build for a few days now, which appears to be identical to the public release, so I'm set on the iPad – though I do need to update my iPhone later on.

Whenever you manage to get updated, let us know in the comments how it went for you and what your favorite new features are.

How to manually update to iOS 6 over-the-air (OTA)

iOS 6 is here -- read our complete iOS 6 review! -- and if you're itching to get your hands on it but your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch isn't yet alerting you that it's available, you can manually update over-the-air.

Follow along and we'll show you how!

How to manually update to iOS

iPad software update alert notification

  1. Launch the Settings app.

  8. Once it's finished downloading, you'll be prompted to instal (and restart) your device. If you don't explicitly hit Later or Install within a few seconds, it will install on your behalf.
  9. Apple will verify the install.

How to update iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch to iOS 6 via iTunes

iOS 6 is here -- read our complete iOS 6 review! -- and you'll want to make sure you update in order to take advantage of all the new features iOS 6 has to offer. While you can update over the air if you're already on iOS 5, you can also update via iTunes.

So if the update isn't showing up for you directly on your device and you just can't wait any longer to update, follow along to update the old fashioned way using iTunes.

What you need

You'll need to make sure your device is capable of running iOS 6. Features and their availability may be subject to device model but if you're device is listed below, you're good to go.

  • iPhone 3GS
  • iPhone 4
  • iPhone 4S
  • iPod touch 4th generation
  • iPad 2
  • New iPad (iPad 3)

Next you'll need to make sure you have the latest version of iTunes which will be version 10.7. You can either visit iTunes.com to snag the latest update or if you're on a Mac, just run a software update and it should come through.

Back up your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

In the event something goes wrong with your update, you'll always want to make sure you have a current backup. If you haven't made one recently via iCloud or iTunes, make sure you do before proceeding.

If you're using iCloud, you can follow our tutorial on how to backup your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iCloud.

If you aren't yet using iCloud you'll want to manually create a backup in iTunes before updating.

  1. Plug your current iPhone into your computer and open iTunes. Your phone should start to sync and backup automagically.
  2. If it doesn't start to sync automatically, click the Sync button in order to back up your device. (You can alternately right click your device name in the navigation bar and click back up as well. Either way will work just fine.)

How to update to iOS 6 via iTunes

Now that you've backed up your device you're ready to update to iOS 6.

  1. Plug your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch into your PC or Mac.
  2. Open iTunes and click on your device name in the left hand navigation pane.
  3. itunes phone backup
  4. Under the Summary tab, click on the button labeled Check for Update.
  5. itunes check for update
  6. iTunes should alert you that there is an update available for your device.
  7. If you're ready to update right now, choose the Download and Update option.
  8. ios 6 update itunes
  9. Confirm any prompts that pop up and let iTunes do its thing.

What’s on Your iPad: Wayne Schulz

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 09:24 AM PDT

Wayne Schulz iPad Home Screen

What's on Your iPad? A simple question but one that leads to some fascinating answers. This is another installment of our now-regular series of What's on Your iPad posts. I enjoy these a lot because I love seeing how people put their iPads to use – and I find them a great resource for discovering new apps.

Today's answers are provided by Wayne Schulz. I've enjoyed Wayne's online writing and his sharing of some of the most bizarre and funny wonders of the web for many years, ever since I got to know it during his stint as an editor at Gear Diary. These days I keep up with him and talk with him mainly via Facebook and Google+ – and I'm very happy he took time to do this post with me. Here's a little more Bio blurb on Wayne:

Wayne is a technology fan who lives in Glastonbury CT and provides support and implementation services for the Sage 100 ERP accounting software.  http://about.me/wayneschulz

Here are Wayne's answers – questions are in regular text, Wayne's answers are in block quotes:

Which iPad model do you use? (original or iPad 2, WiFi or WiFi + 3G, storage size) Any particular reasons for choosing this model?

I have all three models (the first two models being WiFi and having since been passed down to the kids).

My current iPad is the latest version (iPad 3) though I skipped over a WiFi only version and went with a  Verizon 64 GB LTE model.

I was a little hesitant about moving to a model with a monthly fee if I wanted data access. Here's why I ultimately chose the iPad with Verizon LTE (a decision I'm still happy with):

  • Can turn the LTE on and off at will – no contract
  • Verizon allows you to use your iPad to tether other devices (I'm using it to tether my MacBook Pro) with NO additional fee. (Note: I do NOT believe AT&T offers iPad tethering for free).
  • The concept of "I'll just connect to WiFi' so I don't need a data connected iPad is great except I use my iPad for note taking and connecting to Basecamp during visits to customers. It has been my experience that most companies don't want to leave their WiFi access open and tracking down the IT folks to obtain a WiFi password is problematic. Now I can simply power up my LTE and I'm ready to go. I'm often tethering my MacBook Pro at the same time.

Posted: 19 Sep 2012 08:57 AM PDT

Tweetbot for iPad

Tweetbot for iPad, the popular and gorgeous Twitter client for the iPad, is on sale right now at nearly 70% off its standard price. It's down from $2.99 to just 99 cents.

The sale is said to be 'for a very limited time' and is timed nicely to coincide with yesterday's update to the official Twitter app for iPad.

Tweetbot boasts a beautiful and elegant to use interface, and has been my favorite iPad Twitter app just about ever since it came out early this year.

This price drop is the first one I've seen for the app, so this is a great opportunity to grab an excellent iPad Twitter app at a bargain price.

Here's an App Store link for Tweetbot for Twitter (iPad).
