Turn your iPad into a games console with Joypad Games Console and Controller

Turn your iPad into a games console with Joypad Games Console and ControllerIf you yearn for the days when you had a console plugged into your TV and a gamepad to play it with then this particular app combo may be for you. The guys at Joypad have released two apps that work hand in hand to deliver a console like experience to iPad and iPhone or iPod touch users. You install the Joypad Game Console on your iPad and the Joypad Game Controller on your iPhone or iPod touch.

Joypad Game Console is your dashboard for all Joypad Enabled games. Joypad Enabled games can be played on your iPad using your iPhone as the game controller. Install this app on your iPad, then install "Joypad Game Controller" on your iPhone. The two applications will find each other over WiFi and sync up. A controller will appear on your phone, which you can use to navigate the dashboard. When you launch a game, a controller specifically built for that game will appear. Plug your iPad into a TV for an even better experience.

Once you have the two free apps installed you can scroll through a number of games using your iPhone and then you will have to buy them within the app if you want to play them. The list isn't too bad at launch with a good selection of playable games. The developers of the Joypad app combo have also released an SDK to allow game other developers to offer support for the Joypad Game Console and Joypad Game Controller. This is where the success of the apps will be determined; if there is a good take up and other developers support the apps then this could be an excellent solution.

Can you see yourself using a system like this? If you try it out, let us know what you think!

Record audio like a ninja with L'il Sneaky for iPhone

Record audio like a ninja with L'il Sneaky for iPhone

If you've ever wanted to surreptitiously record audio with your iPhone, L'il Sneaky will help you do it with greater ninjary than ever before. Stealthily crafted by the crew at WhereCloud, Martin Dufort, Fred Brunel, Seb Morel, and Christine Zoltok -- you may remember them from the remarkable Twitter client, Reportage -- L'il Sneaky is an iPhone recording app made for Nick Fury, James Bond, Sarah Walker, and Sydney Bristow.

To start recording, you simply, slyly, turn your iPhone 90 degrees sideways. To stop recording, you turn it back. You can even pull down a pure black cloaking screen for the ultimate in secret recording.

I've been testing it for a couple of weeks -- legally and morally, I swear! -- and it works really well. And, of course, you don't have to be Natasha Romanov or Jason Bourne to use it. Any time the built-in iOS voice memo app would be too noisy, or require too many taps to start, stop, and otherwise use, L'il Sneaky gets the job done quietly and quickly.

The free version lets you make and store up to 10 recordings of unlimited length. For just $0.99 you can go pro and enjoy unlimited recordings and share them with anyone in your spy cell... er, social circle.

How to edit Calendar defaults, alerts, and sync settings on iPhone and iPad

How to edit Calendar defaults, alerts, and sync settings on iPhone and iPad

If you've got an iPhone or iPad, you're probably already aware that you've got a pretty excellent Calendar app built right in. If you're the kind of person that likes to have separate calendars for work, home, and other uses, organizing them efficiently is key. There are a few settings you can change around to manipulate the Calendars app to do what you want it to.

If you aren't sure how to edit your Calendar settings, no need to worry, follow along and we'll help you figure it out.

How to set a default Calendar on your iPhone and iPad

If you create a lot of events in one particular calendar on your iPhone or iPad, it can be beneficial to set that calendar as your default one. For most users, this will probably be their work calendar but regardless, the calendar you use most should be your default.

  1. Launch the Settings app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
  3. Scroll down almost to the bottom and then tap on Default Calendar.
  4. Tap on the name of the calendar that you'd like to be the default calendar when you create new events and appointments.
  5. That's it. Your iPhone or iPad will remember and always default to that calendar for newly created events.

How to change default alert times for Calendar events on iPhone and iPad

Alert times are when your calendar alerts you that you have an upcoming event or appointment. You can easily change the setting for when your Calendar app on your iPhone or iPad will alert you of an event.

  1. Launch the Settings app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
  3. Scroll down almost to the bottom and then tap on Default Alert Times.
  4. Here you can change the default alert time for birthdays, events, and all day events.
  5. Change any settings you'd like to change and they'll automatically take affect.

How to change event sync settings for Calendar entries on iPhone and iPad

By default, your iPhone or iPad will only sync so many events. If you need to be able to access events and appointments in the past for reference at any given time, you may want your calendar to always store all your events. If you don't tend to look back at past events, a shorter time period is a better option.

  1. Launch the Settings app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
  3. Scroll down almost to the bottom and then tap on Sync.
  4. Here you can choose how many events you'd like to sync. You can choose in increments of 2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, or all events.
  5. Tap on the one you'd like to choose and that's all there is to it.

Last minute gift ideas: 2012 holiday guide

There's only few more days left before Christmas and many of you may have hit extreme stress and panic mode with the realization that you haven't finished shopping for gifts (or perhaps even started). If that's you, sit back, take a deep breath, and relax knowing that you don't even need to leave the comfort of your couch to finish up your shopping. You can check off the remaining people on your list by shopping directly from your iPhone and iPad. No time left for shipping? No problem! Our list is filled with ideas that can be delivered to your friends and loved ones electronically!

Apple Store gift card

If you're shopping for an Apple fan, there's no going wrong with a gift card to the Apple Store. The recipient can use it towards their next iPhone, iPad, or other Apple device, or for an accessory for one of their current devices. And with the Apple Store app for iPhone, you never even have to leave the house to purchase this awesome gift!

iTunes, App Store, iBooks gift certificate

If they've got all the iOS devices they need, and it's too late to look into accessories, worry not -- content is king of the last minute gifts. Your special someone can never have too many apps, games, music, movies, TV shows, or books to enjoy.

You can either gift them yourself (here are a ton of gift recommendations and best app picks), or better still -- get them a gift certificate so they can pick their own treats. What's great about the gift certificates is that you can purchase them directly from your iPhone in the App Store, iTunes, or Apple Store app.

Netflix, Hulu Plus, Slacker subscription

The real gift that keeps on giving, whether it's audio or video, a subscription can keep your special someone entertained throughout the year.

Flickr Pro account

Flickr is an excellent service for editing, storing, and sharing photos and one that many iPhone users are switching to after the recent news of changes to Instagram's terms of service. Flickr has free accounts, but a Pro account allows for unlimited uploads, full-resolution storage, and more. Any Flickr user would love an upgrade to a Pro account.

Amazon gift certificate

Amazon has a ton of digital content all there own, but they also have old school media -- paper books, plastic CDs and Blu-Rays, games that come on cartridges... Gift certificates let them pick just exactly the goods -- real or virtual -- they want, and Amazon will deliver it straight to their door or their device. Even better, you can send Amazon gift cards directly from the Amazon Mobile iPhone and iPad app!

Starbucks gift card

Almost everyone loves Starbucks and will be ecstatic to receive even just $5 to the popular coffee chain. The good news for you is that sending a friend or loved-one a virtual gift card (through email or Facebook) is as simple as downloading the Starbucks app (that you probably already have, anyway)!

Other gift cards that can be purchased from iPhone

Interested in getting your loved-one a gift card from somewhere other than the one's mentioned above? Check out the apps below by some popular vendors that allow you to purchase eGiftcards directly from your iPhone.

SSL security vulnerability reported in Simple banking app

Posted: 20 Dec 2012 10:30 AM PST

Security requires eternal vigilance, and we're reminded of that once again today by Nick Arnott who went poking around the Simple banking app for iPhone and discovered what looks to be an SSL vulnerability. Arnott describes the issue on his website, Neglected Potential.

The first thing that jumps out is the request to https://api.simple.com/user-api/mobile-auth-tokens when you sign in to your account. Included in the request are your plaintext username and plaintext passphrase. The request is sent over SSL, but this doesn't gaurantee security and when dealing with such sensitive data, more security measures should be taken.

Arnott points out that Simple isn't doing anything here that many other banks aren't also guilty of, but that just makes the problem bigger, not more excusable. Read the full story on his site, linked below.

Samsung facing EU complaint, Apple patent rejected

Samsung facing EU complaint, Apple patent rejected

Samsung is facing an antitrust complaint in the EU regarding FRAND patents, and Apple had a patent rejected by the US Patent Office. Yeah, it's going to be one of those...

The European Union will soon bring an antitrust complaint against Samsung over its use of FRAND patents in legal actions against Apple. Earlier this week, Samsung announced that they would withdraw injunction attempts against Apple that were based on standards-essential patents in Europe, but the EU is still investigating them over whether the seeking such injunctions in the first place is harmful to competition.

Apple has had a patent rejected by the US Patent Office. The patent in question is the so-called pinch-to-zoom patent. For now, Apple can still use the patent in legal actions, as it as only been rejected, not invalidated. The invalidation of the patent would cause trouble for Apple in their infringement victory over Samsung earlier this year, perhaps shrinking the $1.049 billion awarded by the jury. However, a possible invalidation will have to follow the reexamination of the patent. Apple is currently talking ot the Patent Office about the patent, and will be able to fight for its validity or to change the language on the patent in order to keep it relevant to the Samsung case.

Karateka makes old school fighting new again on iPhone and iPad

Posted: 20 Dec 2012 08:25 AM PST

Karateka -- originally released for pre-Mac Apple computers back in the day when bitmap samurai and Shaolin still walked the world, solving problems with their will, their fists, and their keyboard commands -- has now been reborn in full 3D, multitouch glory on the iPhone and iPad.

From Jordan Mechner, who not only made the original side-scroller, but created Prince of Persia as well, and Jeff Matsuda of The Batman animated series fame, the all new Karateka, you get three lives, literally -- the Brute, the Monk, and the True Love -- to attempt to save Mariko from the evil warlord, Akuma. Again, with. your. fists.

They claim the combat is rhythm-based, easy to pick up but challenging to master, and there's three different endings, one for each character.

I'm looking forward to trying it out this weekend, but if you've already strapped on your black belt, kung fu slippers, and gotten your Karateka on, let me know what you think of it.

Karateka is a universal app for both iPhone and iPad. For behind-the-scenes videos on the making of the new Karateka, check out Jordan Mechner's blog.
