Apple acquires eighteen user interface patents from Maya-Systems

Posted: 01 Feb 2013 12:31 AM PST

Apple acquires eighteenuser interface patents from Maya-SystemsApple has acquired eighteen user interface patents from Canadian company Maya-Systems. The patents are all related to its axis-based interface where documents and files can be stored and grouped in the cloud. A searchable timeline can then be created based on a files tags or attributes; it all sounds very similar to an Evernote type of system for notes and storage.

In the third quarter of 2012, a transaction took place between Maya-Systems Inc. and Apple Inc. (apple.com), through which Apple acquired a portion of Maya-Systems' patents relating to innovative axis-based user interface technology. The acquisition included 18 patent properties of Maya-Systems.

Maya-Systems' technology offers an intuitive way to display any virtual content in a superior manner. This transaction attests that Maya-Systems axis-based user interface is ahead of the growing demand for axis-based user interfaces. "We dealt with a significant number of sophisticated buyers," noted Mathieu Audet, founder of Maya-Systems and patent agent. "We are pleased to have secured the transaction with Apple." "Our patents have been analyzed thoroughly by many potential buyers. We are confident that they are strong assets." The negotiations with Apple were carried out with the assistance of Mr. Louis Carbonneau from Tangible IP LLC

As noted by MacRumors, Maya-Systems main product is called "I am Organized", it is a platform for organizing, sharing and viewing files and documents stored in the cloud. It looks like Apple wanted these patents to significantly enhance its current iCloud file sharing and document storage system; maybe we will find out much more when Apple shows off iOS 7.

Netbot updated with direct Messages on App.net, goes free in effort to spur service adoption

Netbot updated with direct Messages on App.net, goes free in effort to spur service adoption

When Netbot was launched back in October of last year, we praised it as a fine client for the fledgling App.net service. Based on the same user interface as the popular Tweetbot client by Tapbots, it's no surprise that we liked the Netbot client. Since then both the service and the app have evolved, most recently with the addition of a File API and 10GB of cloud storage. While no major apps yet seem to have taken advantage of the File API, the previous addition to App.net - a Messaging API - is seeing growing adoption.

To boot, version 1.3 of Netbot recently hit the iOS App Store with support for the Messaging API, adding a button to the bottom toolbar to get you into your App.net messages (in the process pushing the dedicated profile button to the user-selectable fourth place slot). For those familiar with Tweetbot, Netbot's implementation of the Messaging API should be quite familiar. In fact, it's practically identical, save for the 256-character limit that App.net allows. Since Netbot gained push notifications in late October with version 1.1, if so enabled (instructions here) you'll get them for your App.net messages too.

Messaging support isn't the only thing that's happening with Netbot - it's also now free in the App Store, though for "an unspecified period of time", according to developer Paul Haddad of Tapbots. Netbot debuted at $4.99 for both the iPhone and iPad versions. Tapbots lowered the price to literally nothing with the hope of spurring more users to look at App.net. As Haddad said from his own App.net account, the move does appear to have driven a bump of new users to the service. If that will be sustained is another question, though App.net does seem to be on a slow-but-steady rise. It doesn't hurt Tapbots too much, as Haddad pointed out, they're making more from App.net's Developer Incentive Program than they are from App Store sales of Netbot.

So if you've been waiting for a reason to try out App.net's pay service, the barrier to entry just dropped by five bucks.

Apple's request for import ban on Samsung Galaxy Nexus rejected

Apple again fails to get import ban on Galaxy Nexus

Apple failed in its effort to get an import ban on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. A U.S. appeals court rejected Apple's request after revisiting an October decision by the same court. Apple had been hoping that the new panel of judges would overturn the earlier ruling. The Galaxy Nexus isn't completely same yet, however, as a trial surrounding that device will begin in March 2014. According to Reuters, Samung is now in a stronger position because of this ruling:

In its October ruling against Apple, the appeals court raised the bar for potentially market-crippling injunctions on product sales based on narrow patents for phone features. The legal precedent puts Samsung in a much stronger position by allowing its products to remain on store shelves while it fights a global patent battle against Apple over smartphone technology.

Apple had wanted the full, nine-judge panel to rule on their request, but the court did not feel that the issue was controversial enough to warrent such action. While Apple could still appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, it is unlikely that they would find success. The fate of the Galaxy Nexus isn't completely decided however as a patent trial surrounding that device will begin in March 2014.

iPad Losing Market Share to Rivals with Make-Believe Numbers

Posted: 31 Jan 2013 10:26 AM PST

Q$ 2012 Tablets Market Share

According to the latest figures from IDC, the iPad is still the leader in the tablets market, but its market share is falling for the second quarter in a row. Their numbers for the final quarter of 2012 show the tablet market overall growing very nicely, with 52.5 million units shipped – growth of 75% over the previous year.

iPad still holds the biggest market share at 43.6% – but the loss of market share is attributed mostly to two rivals: Samsung who are #2 on the chart with 15.1% market share, and Amazon with 11.5%. The thing is though, the iPad share is based on Apple's actual reported *sales* of 22.9 million iPads during the quarter. Samsung reports only shipment numbers, which may differ significantly from actual sales. Amazon reports no sales numbers at all – they just come out with statements about how great sales have been for their devices on Amazon and how they've...

Twelvesouth introduces the SurfacePad, a luxury leather cover for your iPhone

Twelvesouth introduces the SurfacePad, a luxury leather cover for your iPhoneWell known high end Apple accessory manufacturer Twelvesouth has announced its latest accessory for the iPhone and it is something just that little bit different. Say hello to the "SurfacePad" which Twelvesouth is calling an ultra-slimluxury leather cover for the iPhone. Yep, it is not a case according to Twelvesouth, it's a cover for those that like to keep their iPhone safe from life's daily dangers while still allowing its beautiful design to shine through.

Made from luxury Napa leather, SurfacePad dresses up iPhone unlike any other cover. At less than 1/10th an inch thick and weighing less than one ounce, this thin leather jacket does not interfere with the buttons, ports or camera on iPhone. Since the cover wraps around and protects the front and back surfaces, the tell-tale profile of the iPhone remains on display. At a glance there's never any doubt what phone you've chosen to run your world.

SurfacePad is thin, light and shows off your iPhone - but it also makes a design statement all its own. It adds a pop of color to your iPhone. It makes your phone distinctive and sophisticated in a sea of silly plastic. With its razor thin profile and supple touch, SurfacePad is the first cover worthy of your iPhone, and shares the same design sensibilities as well. Sleek, modern, minimal - both device and cover are cut from the same cloth

The SurfacePad for iPhone is available for the iPhone 4, 4s and 5 and comes in three different colors too. You can have it in Jet Black, Modern White or Red Pop. The SurfacePad also has a built in stand sewn into the back cover which lets you watch videos or even set your iPhone down in a position suitable for use as a bedside clock radio. If you fancy getting your hands on one of these rather innovative covers for your iPhone they are available right now from Twelvesouth and will cost you $34.99.

What do you think about the Twelvesouth SurfacePad for iPhone?

How to download and delete individual songs on your iPhone and iPad with iTunes Match

How to download and delete individual songs on your iPhone and iPad with iTunes Match

iTunes Match, Apple's streaming service for music, matches your entire music library and allows you to stream music directly to your iPhone or iPad wherever you have a data connection. There may come times where you don't have a data connection and would like to download certain music to your iPhone or iPad for use when you don't have service. As of iOS 6.1, you can now download and delete individual songs, instead of whole albums, right on your iPhone and iPad.

Here's how...

Before proceeding any further, you'll need to make sure you're subscribed to iTunes Match. It's a paid service that Apple offers for $24.99 per year. If you aren't already signed up, here's a guide to get you started before you continue any further.

Once you're all signed up to iTunes Match and have your library matched, continue on.

How to download an individual song on iPhone and iPad with iTunes Match

There are many reasons you may want to physically download music to your iPhone or iPad. Whether you're planning on being on a plane or in an area that doesn't have good cell service, you can download your content from iTunes Match straight to your device for playback anytime.

  1. Launch the Music app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Find the artist name for the song you'd like to download. (You can also use album or song view, whichever you'd prefer to search with.)
  3. Drill down to the song you want to download by album.
  4. Next to the name of the song, you'll see a download button to the right. It looks like a cloud with a download icon in the middle. Tap on it.
  5. You'll notice that the song of your choice has now begun to download to your device. Give it a few seconds to finish download and that's it. It's now physically downloaded onto your device for playback whenever you'd like.

How to delete an individual song on iPhone and iPad with iTunes Match

Storage space can be precious and if you're running out, clearing out songs if you're an iTunes Match subscriber is a perfect option. You'll still be able to play the songs you delete via streaming wirelessly, they just won't be taking up actual space on your iPhone or iPad.

  1. Launch the Music app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Find the name of the artist or album for the song you'd like to delete.
  3. Drill down to the actual song. You may find the title using whatever search method you'd like.
  4. You'll notice that there is no download icon next to the song name because it's already downloaded to your device's physical storage.
  5. Swipe across the name of the song to the right.
  6. You'll notice that a Delete button has now appeared. Tap on it.
  7. You should now see a download button appear to the right of the song title. This means it was deleted from your actual iPhone or iPad and you can download it again whenever you want or stream it from wherever you have an active data connection.
  8. That's all there is to it!

Facebook iPad App Updated: Send Voice Messages, Record & Share Videos Within the App

Posted: 31 Jan 2013 09:00 AM PST

Facebook iPad App

The Facebook app for iPad and iPhone has been updated this week, to Version 5.4.

Headlining the short list of new features in the update are the ability to send voice messages and record and share video right from within the app. You send a voice message via the chat section of the app – use the + button at the bottom left of the chat window to bring up the option to record voice.

You can record and share video while doing a status update. This will let you choose an existing video from the Camera Roll or record a new one.

Both features work just as advertised. I honestly enjoy using Facebook far more on the iPad now than on the desktop.

Here's an App Store link for Facebook; it's a free app and a universal app designed for both the iPad and the iPhone.

iMore at Macworld|iWorld 2013: Cupertino

Posted: 31 Jan 2013 08:45 AM PST

Wednesday morning we high-tailed it over to Moscone West to pick up our Macworld|iWorld media badges -- the big honking necklaces that grant us access to all the events we want to cover for you. Once those were squared away, we ran back to the hotel to edit the photos and videos from the MacBreak Weekly trip.

Once all of that was uploaded and posted, we got on the road and pointed ourselves towards Cupertino. Apple headquarters is about 90 minutes south of San Francisco. Nestled in the small town of Cupertino, it occupies not only what's traditionally thought of as the Apple campus, but now spills over into adjacent buildings and parts of town. That growing lack of space is no doubt a big part of the reason Apple's building a new, spaceship-style mothership.

Visitor's parking was packed, but we caught someone leaving and managed to score a space. Then we dashed into the Company Store.

Picture an Apple Store, and then add to it Apple branded clothing -- shirts, caps, jackets, etc. -- as well as pens and pencils, mugs and umbrellas, keychains and notebooks. Some things are playful "Siri, remind me to wash this shirt", or "This is the most amazing shirt we've ever made". Most just has a single, tasteful Apple logo. The Company Store is the only place in the world where you can get them, so if you're ever in the area and want a piece of Apple-cana, make sure you stop by.

We took the scenic way back, driving along the coast so Martin could take his trademark "The Stance" self-portraits along the beaches and cliffs.

Once back we met up with some fellow bloggers and friends for drinks, then briefly checked out Macworld|iWorld's media reception, then headed off to the Smile party. Smile, who makes TextExpander and PDF Pen was celebrating 10 years as a company.

There were a ton more fellow media types there, but also some longtime fans. Meeting you guys, the people who read and listen and watch and comment and participate, is the absolute best part of Macworld|iWorld and one of the major reasons I love coming to this even in particular every year.

Today the Macworld|iWorld expo opens its doors. Martin and I will be covering it as best we can for you. I'll also be on a panel called iCloud, App Stores, and other Things To Fear: Has Apple Forgotten Power Users? hosted by Macworld's Lex Friedman, with John Gruber, Paul Kafasis, and Matthew Panzarino at 1pm.

Should be a fun day. If you're here, please do say hi. If you're following along, please let me know what you want to see.
