Evasi0n [jailbreak](http://www.imore.com/jailbreak) will be the first untethered iOS 6.1 jailbreak, all signs again point to this SundayIt finally has an official name, the new jailbreak for iOS 6.1 will be called the Evasi0n jailbreak and again all signs point to it arriving this Sunday. The team which goes by the name of Evad3rs announced via twitter that its site is now live and it is putting the final touches to the jailbreak's GUI (Graphical User Interface).

The official evasi0n 6.1 jailbreak: http://evasi0n.com -- Check regularly for updates! #evasi0n

The new jailbreak release date was originally teased as being on Super Bowl Sunday which is this Sunday. The images displayed on the Evasi0n site all show the number 3 on the calendar app which just happens to line up nicely with this Sunday's date of February 3.

The jailbreak will require no more than five minutes of your time and will need to be done by tethering your device to a Mac or PC for one time only. Your device will need to be running a minimum of iOS 6.0. The Evasi0n jailbreak will cover all iPhone, iPod touch, iPad and iPad mini models. As usual, as soon as this is live, we will have a full how-to covering the new jailbreak.

So who is getting excited for Sunday now?

USPTO grants Apple trademark on store design

USPTO grants Apple trademark on store design

A clear glass storefront surrounded by a paneled façade. Rectangular recessed lighting units. Cantilevered shelves. Rectangular tables arranged in a line in the middle of the store parallel to the walls and extending from the storefront to the back of the store.

Yep, that's an Apple Store alright. And that's the wording that Apple included in their trademark application for the Apple Store design, inarguably as much of an icon for Apple as the patented designs of their products. The trademark was granted last week by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Apple filed the application back in 2010, but was twice rejected. In response, Apple filed a 122-page brief on how their design could be considered "inherently distinctive". This brief included customer surveys and photos of various Apple Stores, and apparently was enough to persuade the USPTO that the trademark application should be approved and appropriately registered.

We doubt Apple's going to be putting a little ™ in the corner of each Apple Store, but this does give Apple some leeway to pursue a legal offense against retailers they consider to be infringing on their trademarked design. It's worth nothing that this isn't a design patent, for Apple to pursue claims against another retailer they'd have to prove that customers are likely to be confused by the other company's allegedly similar design.

If you're thinking that Microsoft's retail stores might be the target of Apple's pursuit of a trademark on their own, that very well might be. Microsoft's first retail store opened in October 2009 in Scottsdale, Arizona, followed a week later by another store in Mission Viejo, California. Apple's trademark application was submitted seven months later. To date, Microsoft has opened thirty retail stores in the United States and Canada.

The appearance of Microsoft Stores really is quite similar to that of Apple's, with a clear glass storefront surrounded by a paneled façade, recessed rectangular lighting units, and rectangular tables - though Microsoft's tables are arranged in lines the middle of the store parallel the the storefront and extending between the walls. Numerous fake Apple Stores have been found in China (where Apple does have an official retail presence that draws massive foot traffic), though Apple's trademark from the USPTO is only valid within the borders of the United States.

What exactly Apple intends to do with their shiny new store design trademark is unknown at this point. But given Apple's aggressiveness with taking the court option when defending their patent claims, we wouldn't be surprised to see more of USPTO Registration Number 4277914 in the future…

Honda to add Siri Eyes Free to Accord, Acura RDX and ILX

Honda to add Siri Eyes Free to Accord, Acura RDX and ILX

If you're in the market for a new car, your options for Siri integration in vehicles are about to dramatically increase. And by dramatically, we mean you'll be going from two potential cars with Siri Eyes Free to five. At CES 2013, Chevy showed off Siri Eyes Free integration in the compact Sonic and subcompact Spark, and today Honda has announced that they're bringing the same to three substantially larger vehicles in the corporate stable.

Coming later this year, customers will have the option when purchasing a 2013 Honda Accord, Acura RDX, or Acura ILX to add Siri Eyes Free integration. Supposedly the connection is accomplished over Bluetooth, which is nice since all three vehicles come with Bluetooth and USB standard. Except that Honda is making Siri integration will be a "dealer-installed option", which means there's likely a hardware button swap/rewiring and/or software upgrade that needs to be performed at the dealership before you can take home your new car.

Honda's not saying where the control for triggering Siri will be in these vehicles, but out money's on steering wheel controls. Also, we wouldn't expect Siri integration to be limited to the Accord, RDX, and ILX for long when it comes to the Honda combined line-up, nor would we expect it to be a dealer add-on when it comes time to perform mid-cycle refreshes and periodic redesigns. Things move slowly in the automotive world, which is a good given the cost of these things (that base Accord will run you a minimum of $21,680.00, plus taxes, license, registration, and destination charges). But your lowly blogger's 2007 Honda Civic? That's not likely to get Siri integration any time soon.

US authorities can access foreign users' iCloud data without their consent

US authorities can access foreign users' iCloud data without their consent

If you don't live in the United States but make use of Apple's online storage system, iCloud, US authorities could technically obtain and view your information without your consent. Actually, this doesn't just affect iCloud, but any cloud storage service such as Dropbox, Google Drive, and any other service that is based in the United States.

While this isn't new news, nor reason to stop using all your cloud storage accounts, it's still interesting and worth knowing, especially if you live outside the US but have a lot of your data stored with iCloud or another service. The Independent has an intriguing story on the subject and what it means for international users -

Amendments to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, known as FISA, allow US government agencies open access to any electronic information stored by non-American citizens by US-based companies. Quietly introduced during the dying days of President George W Bush's administration in 2008, the amendments were renewed over Christmas 2012.

This basically means that if US authorities found reason, they could search your cloud storage accounts for information. Most of this was probably put into place to prevent acts of terrorism considering this rule doesn't apply for United States residents. Even so, it just goes to show that sometimes convenience comes at the price of privacy.

The Independent goes on to explain why the rule may have went into affect -

Significantly, bodies such as the National Security Agency, the FBI and the CIA can gain access to any information that potentially concerns US foreign policy for purely political reasons – with no need for any suspicion that national security is at stake – meaning that religious groups, campaigning organisations and journalists could be targeted.

Basically FISA was put into place to target any potential threats. Basically, unless you give them a reason or raise a red flag for them to follow up on, your data probably won't ever be looked at our touched. Any foreign readers out there have any input on whether this would affect your decision to use cloud storage services?

iPhone users pay higher cell phone bills than any other smartphone user

Posted: 30 Jan 2013 01:44 PM PST

iPhone users the biggest cash cows for carriers

iPhone users pay more in carrier fees on average than the users of other smartphones. New data indicates that 60% of iPhone users spend at least $100 per month on their cellular plan, with 10% spending $200 or more. Conversely, only 53% of Android users pay over $100 per month, with 7% paying $200 or more. Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP), the company that provided the data, says that this spending has little to do with usage habits, according to the Wall Street Journal:

"We think it has to do with their data plans and carriers, rather than their usage habits," CIRP co-founder Michael Levin explained. "They are all on expensive data plans, unlike Android users, some of which are on prepaid or unsubsidized plans with regional carriers."

This is not really surprising. Verizon and AT&T, the two largest wireless providers in the United States, also charge their customers the most. Plans on Verizon start at $100 per month, with $40 for line access, and $60 for 2 GB of data. By comparison, they charge $10 per month for tablet access. AT&T starts individual customers at $60 per month, with $40 for 450 minutes, $20 for 300 MB of data, and no included text messaging.

But just because the carriers are charging more for these smartphones doesn't necessarily mean that they are making more money, as the iPhone has higher subsidies than other phones in its class. Carriers use the more expensive plans to make back more of their money faster than they used to.

What is your wireless plan like? Have you found ways of saving money on these plans? Let us know below in the comments.

App Store brought in 3.5 times more revenue than Google Play in 2012

App Store brought in 3.5 times more revenue than Google Play in 2012

App Annie, a service that tracks revenue and growth for both the App Store and Google Play, has released their January 2013 index. Both marketplaces are doing very well and while Google Play saw more growth than the App Store, the App Store still managed to bring in over 3 times more than Google Play.

When comparing both app ecosystems, Google Play has grown tremendously with over 700,000 apps now available to consumers compared to the App Store's 800,000, according to App Annie and Bloomberg.

App Annie wouldn't disclose specific revenue figures because it sells that information separately to software companies that buy the data and analytics. While Apple has said the App Store has generated more than $7 billion since 2008, Google hasn't made such information public. Apple has more than 800,000 apps on its store, and Google has more than 700,000.

Apple has reported to average around $333 million a month since June to December, which is over 3 times more than Google Play. Apple also saw an increase in sales of around 20% between October and December which can probably be attributed to the release of the iPhone 5 and iPad mini.

What's interesting though is that Google Play has grown 6 times its size prior to 2012, even though Apple still pulled in higher revenue. Apple's App Store has been around a lot longer than Google Play and has a very established user base but it shows that both ecosystems are doing remarkably well as coming into a brand new year.

New Apple TV revealed by the FCC is not smaller and only includes minor component changes

New Apple TV revealed by the FCC is not smaller and only includes minor component changesYesterday, the FCC published details on a new Apple TV that appeared to be smaller than the current Apple TV third generation. This information led to widespread speculation that a new model of Apple TV was about to arrive with new features too. Unfortunately it appears that this is not the case, the dimensions will remain the same but the internal components will be subject to just minor changes. The Verge managed to get a statement from Apple to explain the confusion.

We sometimes make component changes which require an updated model number for regulatory approval. The component changes we made don't affect product features and Apple TV customers will continue to have the same great user experience.

It had been rumored that the internal component change could be the addition of the A5x processor; before we will know if this is the case, we will have to wait for someone to crack one open and take a look inside as Apple is not giving out any more details. Either way, the experience and look of this updated Apple TV will be exactly the same as it was before.

How to buy movie tickets with Siri on your iPhone and iPad

How to buy movie tickets with Siri on your iPhone and iPad

As of iOS 6, Siri has been able to help you find movie theaters and showtimes. With the iOS 6.1 update Siri can also help you purchase tickets to the movie of your choice with help from the Fandango app. All you have to do is have Fandango installed and then ask Siri to find tickets.

If you aren't sure how, follow along...

First, you must install the Fandango app on your iPhone or iPad in order for Siri to help you buy movie tickets. It's available for free in the App Store.

  1. Press and hold the Home button on your iPhone or iPad to activate Siri.
  2. Ask her something like "Find showtimes for Zero Dark Thirty." She will then pull up a list of showtimes.
  3. Siri may find the movie playing at multiple theaters with different showtimes. Simply tap on the theater that you'd like to go to.
  4. From here tap on the showing time you'd like to go to.
  5. Now tap on Buy Tickets.
  6. The Fandango app will now launch and you'll be able to complete your purchase through there.
  7. That's it. Your tickets will be purchased and you can either print them out or pick them up at the theater.

iPad Insight First Post

Three years ago yesterday I made my first post on this site – that one shown above. Back then the site was called Just Another iPad Blog, as some of you may remember. I like the current name much better and it won't be changing.

Although I know these 3 years have flown by it still feels like a long time ago that I was writing that first welcome post. I think 'technology years' are a bit like dog years – things change so quickly that a single year can feel like a much longer time.

As the 3rd anniversary of this site approached I've been reflecting a little on how truly game-changing the iPad has been, and how far this site has come over this time. So I thought I'd share a few site numbers and milestones and most popular articles of all time to help mark the occasion. Here goes:

– We've published over 3,600 posts – right around 100 a month,

– Over 11,000...

First Look: BlackBerry 10 vs. iPhone 5

Posted: 30 Jan 2013 08:42 AM PST

It's no secret to anyone interested in smartphones. For the past couple of years, BlackBerry maker Research In Motion has had some issues keeping up with the likes of iOS and Android. Now though, it's the moment BlackBerry fans have been waiting for. Today marks the release of the all new BlackBerry 10 OS and to go along with it, the announcement of two brand new devices running that OS. The first device, a full touch screen experience called the BlackBerry Z10 will soon be hitting the market followed up later this year by a full QWERTY version dubbed the BlackBerry Q10.

The fearless leader of CrackBerry Nation, Kevin Michaluk, has had a BlackBerry 10 device in his hands for the past week and just attended the launch event in NYC, bringing iMore readers back a first look at the BlackBerry Z10 device. It's still too early to say if this will be a home run for RIM, but competition in this market is good and it helps keep things balanced. Check out the video above and let us know your thoughts on it all in the comments. If you want to see more, be sure to head on over to CrackBerry and read their full review.

iPad Funnies: New iPad with Even More Storage (in a Drawer)

iPad with Storage Drwaer

Great news, via The Onion:

In what tech giant Apple is calling a "major leap forward" for one of its most beloved products, the company announced Tuesday it would begin selling a new version of its popular iPad tablet with an extra attached storage drawer… "With slick ball-bearing slides and an ultra-light frame, the 4D can easily carry photographs, pens, calculators, legal pads, iPhones, and other personal belongings. Life just got a whole lot better, iPad users."

Clearly a feature that will give the iPad a new competitive edge over all those copycat rival tablets. :)

Minecraft Pocket Edition

- Baby animals
- Signs
- Armor
- Fancy Clouds

Known bugs (fixed for next version)

I have to admit I don't play this game, butt the update caught my eye because my daughter plays the heck out of it. I'm pretty sure if I ever saw a breakdown of her usage of her iPhone and iPad Minecraft and texting would be neck and neck at the top of the list.

Here's an App Store link for Minecraft Pocket Edition; it's priced at $6.99.

BlackBerry 10 launches today, makes iOS the oldest major operating system in mobile

BlackBerry 10 launches today, makes iOS the oldest major operating system in mobile

BlackBerry is holding their BlackBerry 10 launch event today -- technically several events around the world -- and CrackBerry is live in both New York City and Toronto, and they'll be bringing you back everything you need to know. (Basically whether this'll be Rocky 3 for RIM... or Rocky 5.)

Most interesting to us, when BlackBerry 10 launches, it'll make iOS the oldest major operating system in mobile. Back in 2007 iOS was the newest, of course, and a massive leap beyond the old, instantly outdated Symbian, BBOS, PalmOS, and Windows Mobile operating systems of the time.

Then Google began to pivot Android into what eventually launched with the G1. Palm ditched PalmOS for webOS. Microsoft put down Windows Mobile in favor of Windows Phone 7. And now even RIM has replaced BBOS with BlackBerry 10.

Whether it works for everyone or not isn't the point. Whether it's ultimate successful in the market doesn't matter. Either way, triumph of tragedy, it'll bring new ideas to the table.

We're still months away from iOS 7, and hopefully Apple wowing us all over again.

But today is RIM's shot.

Keep it locked on CrackBerry for full BlackBerry 10 live event coverage and more throughout the day.
