iPad mini already installed in a car dashboard, could be the perfect in-car entertainment device

iPad mini already installed in a car dashboard, could be the perfect in-car entertainment deviceThe iPad mini was only available to buy yesterday but it has already found its way into a car dashboard. The guys from Soundwaves in Tampa, Florida were really on the ball with this one by pre-fabricating the necessary dashboard mods all ready for the iPad mini's launch.

Once they got their hands on an iPad mini yesterday morning, it was all systems go. To make this project even more interesting, the guy's filmed the install and testing for your viewing pleasure. The iPad mini is fully removable too so no need to worry about leaving it behind when you leave your car.

The prospect of having an iPad mini as your in car entertainment system is certainly one that whets my appetite. It would probably be better to wait for the iPad mini with LTE to enable the GPS features as well as the possibility to access streaming services as well all as everything else an iPad mini can do. Looking at this set up, using an iPad mini as an in-car entertainment system seems like the perfect solution.

Would you fancy having an iPad mini as your in car entertainment system?

Apple airs iPad mini ad 'Piano'

Posted: 02 Nov 2012 10:20 PM PDT

To coincided with the launch of the iPad mini, Apple has started airing a new television ad called "Piano" that focuses on this new device. The ad actually begins with an iPad 4 running GarageBand and a hand comes in to play the intro to the popular piano duet Heart and Soul. When it's time for the second pianist would join the song, an iPad mini slides in and a hand begins to play the melody of the song. As the song is played, the camera slowly pans and zooms into the iPad mini so that it's the only featured device. There is no voiceover for this ad, just music being played by iPads.

What do you think of the new ad?

Editors desk: The Future of Star Wars podcast

Posted: 02 Nov 2012 07:36 PM PDT

Earlier this week, Disney announced they were buying Lucasfilm, including Industrial Lights & Magic, Skywalker Sound, Indiana Jones, and Star Wars from George Lucas, for $4 billion and change in cash and stock. That's roughly Disney paid for Marvel a few years ago (and have since spun off into the Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hulk, and the Avengers film franchises), which pretty much sets shows the price tag has been set for large slices of my childhood.

In the wake of the announcement, Guy English of Kicking Bear and Dave Wiskus of Better Elevation, Matt Drance of Apple Outsider, Dan Moren of the forthcoming Dan Shot First, and I stumbled from Twitter onto Skype to record our thoughts, fears, hopes, concerns, fantasies, and lamentations about the future of a Disney owned Star Wars.

Directors, cast, crew, stories, traps, heroes' journeys, timelines, themes, theatrics, dramatics, and dreams, no topic is safe when a bunch of tech nerds get their Force talk on. Listen in:

Evernote 5 for iOS revealed, coming soon

Posted: 02 Nov 2012 03:37 PM PDT

Evernote has announced version 5 of its iOS app. The update includes several new and improved features, including a new home screen, a more streamlined interface for accessing your notes, a Places map, and an improved Page Camera. This update also focuses on speed. Evernote states in their blog post:

We've learned a lot over the years about how people use Evernote on mobile devices. It's all about speed. Whether you're creating a note or browsing to one, everything needs to happen fast. Also, you want the app to easily support your preferred organization scheme. If you're a tagger, then tags must be front-and-center. If you put everything into notebooks, then those need to be quickly accessible.

The iPad also sees the addition of a Recent Notes list to facilitate easier multitasking within the Evernote. The update is not yet available, but is said to be coming "very soon".

iPad 4 unboxing and hardware hands-on

Posted: 02 Nov 2012 03:25 PM PDT

Half a year later and a generation ahead, the iPad 4 is here and while it's the same in almost every discernible way to the previous iPad 3, there are a few things absolutely worth discerning. First, it's got the new Lightning connector. Second, it's got a 720p FaceTime HD camera on the front. Third, it's got an all new, all powerful Apple A6X processor inside (and the forthcoming LTE version will have an all new, all international LTE chipset to boot). But can you judge that particular book by this cover? Watch!

iPad Mini. Want.

Posted: 02 Nov 2012 02:39 PM PDT

I still have no power (NYSEG now estimates restoration at 11 p.m. Sunday night) but I managed to get my mitts on an iPad mini today at the Apple store in Stamford, CT. As it happens, the store had no mini's on display; several employees were carrying them around instead. They were more than happy to show them off and allowed extensive in hand demos.

Bottom line: I want one.

Yup, I'd read the reviews, made a cutout, and used other devices to get a sense for its size and weight. But in the hand….wow. To say that it weighs 1/2 as much as the iPad doesn't quite capture it. The marginal returns from the weight loss seem greater than 2X if you follow me. And it's seriously thin. It feels like waaaaaay less in the hand, in a less is more kind of way. Wonderful.

I focused on iBooks and Safari. Those are the apps I could envision allowing a mini to suck usage time away from my iPad. My concerns about the keyboard were more or less validated – no extensive text entry in landscape is likely for me, though using two thumbs in portrait wasn't bad. A quick tweet and an email bore that out.

Safari was fine though not as luxuriant as on the iPad. iBooks otoh is an entirely different animal. I enjoy reading on my iPad but the weight is definitely fatiguing over time. I still do it but I would happily do it more, and more comfortably, on a mini.

As for the screen, it was fine. It worked fine for me on an iPad 1 and 2, so shrunken down was a marginal improvement over that (admittedly out of date) experience. I'll happily get a mini with a retina display when they ultimately make one. In the meantime, they'd sold out of the 16GB model or I might've grabbed one on impulse. Instead, this goes on my Christmas list.

Go check one out in person. You will want one.

‘New to iPad? Start Here’ – Featured Section in iPad App Store This Week

Posted: 02 Nov 2012 11:01 AM PDT

NewToiPadFeaturedSection

A new featured section in the iPad App Store this week is titled 'New to iPad? Start Here' – to go alongside the launch of the iPad mini and the iPad 4th gen, or iPad 4. It gets near top billing in the iPad App Store too – positioned just below the rotating Editors' Choice block, and above even the New and Noteworthy section.

The section offers up an eclectic mix of popular and notable apps across a broad range of categories, with a good sprinkling of some of Apple's own leading titles. For productivity there are the apps that make up the iWork suite: Keynote (presentations), Numbers (spreadsheets), and Pages (word processing); as well as the excellent Evernote app. For those who like the idea of getting their news on the iPad, there are the CNN and Flipboard apps. For those looking to get social on the iPad there's Facebook and Pinterest. Entertainment apps in the selection include Netflix and Vimeo.

Of course the selection also includes some critically acclaimed and high-profile iPad games – such as Sky Gamblers: Air Supremacy, which is said to be one of the most stunning games on retina display iPads, The Room, and the recently released Letterpress word game.

One notable family / education app that's included is Star Walk – 5 Stars Astronomy Guide.

There are now over 275,000 apps designed specifically for the iPad and a great number of stellar ones for nearly any category you're interested in – but this featured section should do well as a jumping off point for new iPad users.

Apple may be ordered to discontinue iPhone sales in Mexico

Posted: 02 Nov 2012 09:34 AM PDT

Apple may be ordered to stop selling iPhones in Mexico

Apple just lost a court battle to use the iPhone name in Mexico due to another company already owning the trademark to the name iFone, which they say is similar enough to argue a ban. This could mean that Apple will be ordered to cease sales of the iPhone in Mexico.

Back in 2009, Apple filed suit for the company to discontinue use of the iFone brand arguing that it was too simliar to their own brand. The problem lies in the fact that the company had owned the trademark as far back as 2003. The Mexican company then decided to countersue Apple for damages, and they won. The damages could end up totaling over 40% of Apple sales of the iPhone in Mexico.

The decision could have a considerable impact on the Mexican smartphone market. Telcel and Movistar, numbers one and two among Mexican carriers, are scheduled to begin selling the iPhone 5 on Friday. It is not certain how quickly the sales ban will go into effect or if the two companies will come to some sort of financial settlement.

Basically, if Apple and the Mexican company can't come up with an arrangement or agree on terms, Apple could be ordered to stop selling the iPhone in Mexico. Apple has long been known to use its financial influence to acquire patents, branding, and many other license types. Considering the firm's initial demands for damages amounted to almost 40% of iPhone sales in Mexico, the price to settle may be much more.

It's still unclear how soon Apple would be ordered to stop sales in Mexico and whether or not an agreement will be reached before that time comes.

This iPad mini Has a New Home

Posted: 02 Nov 2012 09:22 AM PDT

iPad mini and box

As I mentioned earlier, the line for the iPad mini this morning at my local Apple store in Austin was very short. There were around 15 people by the time the Apple store opened at 8AM.

That may not be a great omen for Apple and the initial demand for the iPad mini, but it was just fine with me. I had my new 32GB black model fired up to ensure it connected OK to a WiFi network, grabbed a smart cover for it and a Lightning to 30-pin adapter, and was out the door at 8:05. I was back home by about 8:20. For me, that makes getting up in the middle of the night and standing round for several hours worthwhile – and a balmy 60 degree night was helpful too.

I've spent most of my time this morning getting a number of my favorite and most used apps installed on the iPad mini, as I had to set it up fresh – since there's no way my roughly 30GB of apps will fit onto it.

I'll post some first impressions on the iPad mini over the weekend.

For any of you who have been out getting the iPad mini or iPad 4 this morning, I hope your experience was as smooth and fast as mine.

iPad 4 gets a teardown, reveals that not much has changed

iPad 4 gets a teardown, reveals that not much has changed

The iPad 4 has been given the same teardown treatment the iPad mini received by the guys over at iFixIt. In terms of repairability, it earned the same 2 out of 10 score that the 3rd generation iPad received. Other than a new dock connector and a few minor internal differences, much of the iPad 4's design remained unchanged from its predecessor.

Users that were a little upset about purchasing the 3rd generation iPad only to have Apple release an updated model 6 months later will be glad to know that in terms of design, you aren't getting much more. Sure, you've got the Apple A6X processor replacing the A5X in the iPad 3 and the Lightning connector but outside of that, the changes are very minimal.

If you're kicking yourself because you just bought an iPad 3, we've got some welcome news: not too much has changed in the iPad 4. The most striking addition to the fourth generation is the Lightning connector. The iPad 4 also features a slightly thicker, upgraded 1.2 MP Facetime camera, and the upgraded A6X processor. Other than those differences, the iPad 4 remains the same in terms of design and repairability, earning a 2/10 on our repairability scale -- the same score as the iPad 3.

Basically, unless you really desire a speed increase and really just despise carrying two different cables for different devices, then your iPad 3 is still very much relevant. Even the battery from the iPad 3 transferred over to the newer version so battery life won't be any different. It is, of course, still glued to the casing so when it comes to DIY repair, it's still the same annoying process.

Following with what we've heard about Apple dropping Samsung for displays, the display in the iPad 4 is manufactured by LG. It may just be a coincidence at this point considering Apple typically relies on many suppliers for displays. It doesn't mean some units don't have Samsung displays in them this time around. But it's probably a change we can expect to see as of next year if not sooner.

The Lightning connector is on its own assembly and ribbon cable which should drive down the cost of replacing the dock connector once parts are readily available. The dock connector in previous generations of iPads weren't too terrible to replace but it's nice to see that it's still replaceable.

iPad mini is here, and some thoughts on non-Retina

Posted: 02 Nov 2012 05:59 AM PDT

iPad mini launch day, did you get yours yet?

Apple has begun selling the iPad 4 and iPad mini around the world, and while crowds have been much, much smaller than iPhone launches, which stands to reason, they've also been smaller than previous iPad launches. This is Apple's second full-size iPad launch of the year, however, and pre-orders have taken a lot of wind out of in-store, launch day crowds.

I lined up in the middle of the cold (39 degree F), rainy, Montreal night anyway, because that's what I do. There were 2 of us until about 7:30am, when the line had grown to about 20 people. The Apple Store staff handed out vouchers. Only the Wi-Fi models were available (cellular will follow in a few weeks). There were also no 32GB iPad mini in white, but all the other models were in stock. They didn't even bother handing out vouchers for the iPad 4; they had plenty of stock.

Starbucks coffee was served, the store opened at 8am, and most of us were done by 8:20.

I'll be following up with the prerequisite unboxing and hardware tour videos soon. Based on trying the iPad mini out in the store, however, said hardware is almost certainly going to impress.

And to answer the inevitable question -- yes, I'm bothered by the lack of Retina display. It irks my eyes. However, even Apple is bound by the laws of physics and shrinking a 2048x1536 display down to 7.9-inches, hitting 326 ppi, for an iPad mini would require so much backlight and power that it would make the iPad mini much thicker and heavier, and that would defeat the entire purpose. It would likely also increase cost. Miniaturization isn't cheap.

The Retina 4-inch Retina display in the iPod touch and iPhone 5 are "only" 1136x640 pixels by comparison, and the Retina iPad 4 is 48% thicker.

Apple will get Retina on the iPad mini one day, but it's absolutely better to start with thinner and lighter and work their way there.

I’m in the Mini Line for the iPad mini

Posted: 02 Nov 2012 05:00 AM PDT

I'm Number 3 in line in a very mini line for the iPad mini here in Austin. Right now, approaching 7AM, there are only about 8 of us in line at the Barton Creek Mall in Austin – by far the shortest line I've seen for any of the iPad launches.

The Apple staff look pumped up as usual but more than a little surprised at the very small number of people here.

This should be a very quick in and out affair once the store opens at 8.

Are any of you in lines this morning at Apple stores or other retailers?

Apple rewrites its apology to Samsung, now appearing in UK newspapers

Posted: 02 Nov 2012 04:17 AM PDT

Apple has rewritten its apology to Samsung following its previous version which was labelled as "non-compliant" by the court that made the initial ruling. Apple was told by Lord Justice Longmore, Lord Justice Kitchin and Sir Robin Jacob that it had to change the wording of the statement and that it should be carried on its home page with at least an 11-point font. The new statement is now appearing in UK newspapers but has not yet appeared on Apple.com. The news comes from The Next web.

When Apple placed the apology on its website on October 26, it ran part of the order but also included references in its UK lawsuits that Samsung products were "not as cool" as its iPad and iPhone devices. The link to the apology was also tucked away in a hard to view section of its website. Apple representatives apparently told the court that it would take up to 14 days to change the statement, but one of the judges refused to believe it.

So 24-hours later, Apple has published the necessary apology in UK newspapers but it remains to be seen how long it will take to update on its website. Currently the original unsatisfactory statement has been removed so we would expect the revised statement to appear sooner rather than later.
