iMore at Macworld|iWorld 2013: The arrival

Monday at 6am I woke up to the shocking sounds of marimba-as-alarm, jumped in a cab, and headed to Montreal's Trudeau International Airport so I could fly to San Francisco and Macworld|iWorld 2013. Or so I thought. Turns out mother nature had freezing rain on the menu, so the plane that was to carry me to Toronto for the first leg of my jaunt couldn't even get to Montreal. Delay the first.

By the time the plane showed up and we got underway, it was clear I wouldn't make my connection, but there was nothing I could do. Luckily, by the time I landed in Toronto, Air Canada had texted me an automagically re-booked flight. Unluckily, it meant a 6-hour layover. It was right around then that I figured out that while I'd brought 2 mophie power station duos with me, I'd forgotten the two Lightning cables to go with them... D'oh!

70% battery power remaining, and due to the shoddy Rogers reception in Toronto's Pearson International Airport, it was going fast. I put my iPhone in airplane mode and started using my iPad mini the way I normally use my iPhone. I walked around with it, checked my flight schedule with it, played Letterpress on it -- Loren Brichter totally kicked my ass, using "XEROX" for the win -- used Twitter and iMessage to keep up to date, and keep everyone else up to date. And it worked really, really well. I"m not saying I want a 7.9-inch phone, but it once again proved the utility of a tablet smaller than 9.7 inches.

After some Starbucks and a ridiculously over priced $10 turkey sammich (seriously, Starbucks at Pearson, you think you're Heathrow now?!), I found out the airplane that was supposed to take me to San Francisco was also delayed. My 6 hour layover was going to be about 8 hours. Delay the second.

The Wi-Fi at Pearson was horrible, the 3G was horrible, and there was no power at the gates. So, I ended up seated on the floor next to an outside the men's room. And there I blogged for the next 7 hours.

Because while I was stranded in frozen Toronto, Apple was releasing iOS 6.1, ADN was releasing their File API, Facebook and Google were updating apps, and I had a bunch of other stuff to trouble shoot.

My iPhone was down to 30%, thanks to my having to make some calls and the signal quality sucking. My iPad mini was at 70%. Finally, we boarded and eventually took off. I was San Francisco bound.

We made pretty good time to the gate, and thanks to the lateness of the hour, I made great time to the hotel. Tired but more hungry than tired, I met up with Martin Reisch, who'll be shooting the show for us, and we headed to Chieftain for some hardy pub grub -- just after their kitchen had closed. D'oh! Again!

Still, we got to see Moscone West decked out in its Macworld|iWorld garb, which was nice. (See the panorama up top for the inside view).

Luckily Steve Streza of Pocket fame found us and brought us over to Mel's for some late night Diner fare.

Tomorrow should be fun. We're heading up to Petaluma where I'm going to do MacBreak Weekly live with Leo Laporte and the gang. I'll blog about that later, or you can follow me on Twitter to watch it unfold in real -- sometimes comical -- time.

Purported iPad mini-like iPad 5 casings leak

Purported iPad mini-like iPad 5 casings leak

Again, it should come as no surprise to anyone that the next-generation iPad 5 may be adopting the design cues of the iPad mini. With that in mind, 9to5Mac has scored some pictures of what just might be the back casing for the black Wi-Fi + 3G model.

Today, we received an unverified image from a purported China-based iPad accessories maker, an industry that seems to frequently tip off Apple's future product designs, of the back plate for the next iPad.

I've already gone over the background for why this design makes sense, but also what technological hurdles still need to be overcome to make it a reality.

One of the pictures is up top. Check out the rest via the link below.

Google Drive for iOS updated with multi photo/video upload, Quickoffice support, and more

Google Drive has just received an update that adds some new features as well as improvements for existing ones. New features include the ability to upload multiple photos and images at once as well as the ability to open and save Quickoffice documents directly to Google Drive.

Other new features included in the update is the addition of Helvetica Neue as a supported font when creating and editing documents. Other features are simply enhancements to existing functionality such as diagonal scrolling and cell formatting when working with spreadsheets. When working with spreadsheets you'll also be able to pinch to zoom on slides. Animation for slideshows have also been tweaked to flow better.

We haven't noticed much else but if you do, give us a shout in the comments to let us know!

No, not my humble blog (nice though that would be!) We're talking revenues here, and according to this article from the Motlet Fool the iPad will soon generate more revenues than does all of Intel. Pretty cool and not at all surprising anymore.

iOS 6.1 Update Released for iPad

Posted: 28 Jan 2013 02:12 PM PST

iOS 6 update

Apple has released iOS 6.1 today – the latest update to the iPad (and iOS) operating system. Here's the change list for this update:

  • LTE support for more carriers (Apple previously announced that it would add more LTE carriers this week). 36 additional iPhone carriers. 23 additional iPad carriers.
  • Purchase movie tickets through Fandango via Siri (US only)
  • iTunes Match subscribers can now download individual songs from iCloud
  • New button to reset the Advertising Identifier.

If you're currently running iOS 5 or later on your iPad 2,3,4 or iPad mini you can download and install this update right on the iPad itself. To do so, go to Settings > General > Software Update, tap Download & Install, and follow the on-screen prompts.

The download is only around 100MB, but it still took around 15 minutes or so on my iPad 3 and iPad mini.

Happy updating.

Facebook app updated with voice messages, video recording, and more

Facebook app updated with voice messages, video recording, and more

Facebook for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad has been updated to version 5.2 and among the highlighted features are voice messages, video recording, and a new Nearby tab.

Voice messages are billed as a way to add audio to your texts for when you have "more to say".

Video recording happens right in the Facebook app, so you can get yourself, or anything you care to film, online and shared with your entire graph more conveniently than ever. What, if anything, this might have to Twitter's just-launched Vine video service, timing wise is hard to say. However, it'll be interesting to see how Facebook handles Vine-like porn content, should it start cropping up...

And, yes, the Nearby tab got a makeover to encourage you to share where you're at.

As with any Facebook update, it'll be interesting to see which old bugs (and crashes!) get fixed, and which new ones emerge. (Social is hard?).

If you've updated, let me know how it's working for you, and how the video compares to the built-in Camera App or Google Capture. If you haven't downloaded Facebook for iOS yet, here's your link.

App.net adds File API, talks "unbundling", gives members 10GB of cloud storage

App.net adds File API, expounds on

App.net, which pivoted to a Twitter-style service when Twitter began choking out third party client developers, has now taken a bold new step towards what just might be a bigger, unbundled future. And, oh yeah, that future comes with 10GB of cloud storage for members. Dalton Caldwell writes on the App.net blog:

Imagine a world in which your social data (e.g. messages, photos, videos) was easier to work with. For instance, imagine you could try out a new photo sharing service without having to move all of your photos and social graph. In this world, your photos are held in a data store controlled by you. If you want to try out a new service, you can seamlessly login and choose to give permission to that service, and the photos that you have granted access to would be immediately available.

And that storage, part of the new Files API:

App.net "member" and "developer" tier accounts now have access to a 10GB bucket of file storage. This storage can be accessed by App.net applications in order to read/write files.

10GB for $36 a year could be compelling, depending on how services tie into it and build on it. Apple's iCloud is free, Dropbox has a ton of buy-in from iOS developers, and Google and Microsoft continue to escalate size and value with Google Drive and SkyDrive.

But none of it is very social, at least not yet. Many of us probably don't need another Twitter. A surprising amount of us might need a better social web service. Something that lets us keep our stuff our stuff while we explore the migration patterns between giant corporations and hungry young upstarts.

This could be interesting.

Apple TV update lists an as-yet unreleased minor hardware variant, Apple TV 3,2

Apple TV update lists an as-yet unreleased minor hardware variant, Apple TV 3,2

Looks like the just-released Apple TV software update contains strings referencing Apple TV 3,2, an as-yet unreleased hardware variant of the Apple TV 3,1, or the 3rd generation Apple TV with 1080p support that Apple released last March. The code name, J33I, as opposed to last year's simple J33, also suggest only the most minor of differences.

MacRumors's Erik Silvka suggests the I might stand for "international", and represent a version of the current Apple TV updated for all those new countries that just got iTunes media content. That certainly sounds reasonable.

No word yet on when Apple will launch the update, but it certainly doesn't sound event-worthy all on its own.

Purported design details emerge for the less expensive iPhone

Purported design details emerge for the less expensive iPhone

A couple of weeks ago I went through some of what Apple might pursue if/when making a less expensive iPhone for emerging markets. The gist was, like the iPod mini/nano, Mac mini, and iPad mini, Apple would never build something cheap out of cheap parts, but would remove expensive, higher end elements to produce something that still had fantastic build quality, but wouldn't cost as much. Now iLounge's Jeremy Horowitz, who typically has excellent sources, has reported what he's hearing. Here are the bullet points:

  • iPhone 5-style 1136x640 Retina display
  • Plastic chassis (instead of glass and aluminum)
  • iPod classic-like curves with flat port and control surfaces
  • iPod touch 5-style button and bottom configuration

All of that certainly sounds plausible. The iPod touch 5 and iPad mini represent Apple's latest design language, and it doesn't hurt to keep the iPhone 5 -- and eventual iPhone 5S -- materially and visually distinct at the top end.

Right now Apple has free on-contract iPhones. If any of this pans out, they'll have inexpensive off-contract as well. That may matter a bit in North America, but it'll matter a lot in the rest of the developing world.

Still no solid word on the timing, though all of that might be contingent on certain carrier deals in certain very large markets.

Go read all the details:

Apple TV updated with Bluetooth keyboard support, iTunes Match improvements

In addition to releasing iOS 6.1 for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch today, Apple has also released the software for the Apple TV. This update includes improvements to iTunes Match and Up Next, along with general iCloud support enhancements.

Apple has also add the ability to connect the Apple TV with a Bluetooth keyboard (?!), which allows users to enter text for search much faster that using the four-way remote control, and likely faster than the Remote app for iOS, once you factor in connection and navigation time.

The update is available by going to Settings, General, Update Software on your Apple TV. Once you've loaded it up, let me know how it's working for you.

Apps for Apes: iPad Apps Enriching the Lives of Orangutans in Zoos

    Posted: 28 Jan 2013 09:39 AM PST

    Apps for Apes

One of the first words that springs to mind for me when thinking about the iPad is 'versatile' – and I'm continually amazed at the number of great uses for Apple's tablet.

Today's example is the 'Apps for Apes' initiative that the Smithsonian National Zoological Park (our national zoo) and 12 other zoos around the world are taking part in. As the DCist reports, the program has this admirable focus:

… leverages the touchscreen interactivity of Apple's iPad to enrich the lives of those apes in captivity

Orangutans and other great apes are highly intelligent – so it's very important to provide them with both mental and physical stimulation. iPad apps are helping to accomplish this at the zoos involved in the program. The Smithsonian's video shows that painting and music apps appear to be well-liked by their orangutans, while also pointing out that the...

Do You Want a 128GB iPad?

    Posted: 28 Jan 2013 08:32 AM PST

    128GB iPad

Would you be interested in an iPad with 128GB of storage? It looks like we may soon be seeing one if 9to5Mac and their un-named sources are correct. They say Apple is preparing to release a single additional iPad model, as an additional model in the iPad 4th gen lineup.

Here's their sum-up on what's know about this new model:

      • It is a fourth-generation iPad, not a new design.
      • It comes in both the current black and white color options.
      • It comes in both WiFi-only and WiFi + Cellular versions.
      • It is a more premium SKU that will join the current line of 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB fourth-generation iPads.
      • 10-pack deals (in both colors) for educational institutions will be offered.

In an update on their original post, 9to5Mac have said prices will be $799 for a WiFi only model and $929 for WiFi + Cellular. There is also some speculation that this new model might...

    My next reason for upgrading….kids!

    Posted: 28 Jan 2013 07:35 AM PST

I am blessed with two kids, twins as it happens. They each currently 'own' an iPad, handed down to them by my wife and me as we upgraded. Unfortunately, one is an OG iPad (the other an iPad 2), which is not able to update to iOS 6. It lacks a camera, there are several apps his sib uses on the iPad 2 which don't work on the 1, and it's also painfully slow at this point. Every time I pick it up to perform app updates on it, I want to throw it out the window and immediately order an iPad 4 (for me…) and give him my iPad 3.

But I haven't yet, mostly because I think the iPad 4 is a nice update from the 3 but not an overly compelling one. Today though, rumors are circulating about a 128GB model which got me thinking: is that enough for me to pull the trigger at this point? Maybe. I'd really prefer to wait for a fully refreshed model – rumors point to a mini-style form factor with thin side bezels and a lighter, thinner device overall. That would be a no brainer.

I just don't know how long I can hold out. The kids have become very attached to their iPads – probably too much so (there's a doctoral dissertation in here somewhere) – but it pains me to see the upset caused by crashing apps, incompatible apps, etc. And no I'm not just projecting! Trust me – the upset is very real. And it's getting worse the more they learn to hunt around the App Store for free games and such.

Another option – by far the cheapest one – is to get an iPad mini to replace the OG iPad as a sort of stop gap. Here again I'd prefer one with a retina display, but it seems like time is not on my side here. What to do…

Yes, I know – first world problems.

Apple reportedly readying 128GB "Ultimate" iPad 4 for launch

    Posted: 28 Jan 2013 04:40 AM PST

    Apple reportedly readying 128GB

No sooner was support for 128GB NAND flash storage capacities found in iOS 6 beta 5, than reports pop up saying Apple is readying 128GB "ultimate" versions of the iPad 4 for launch. The news come by way of Mark Gurman of 9to5Mac, who typically has excellent sources on imminent product releases.

We've gotten word from sources that Apple is preparing to release (in some fashion) a single, additional iPad model. This would be a new SKU for the current fourth-generation iPad with Retina display line. At this point, we do not have pricing information, so it is definitely difficult to pinpoint exactly what this new iPad model is.

The code names are listed as P101 Ultimate and P103 Ultimate. Gurman stresses that it's not a new iPad, or iPad 5, or anything like that, simply a new, higher capacity version of the current iPad 4, in both Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + Cellular, and in both white and black.

Update: Pricing looks to be $799 for Wi-Fi, $929 for Wi-Fi + cellular.

In early 2008, Apple bumped the original iPhone from 8 to 16GB, so this type of new SKU launch isn't unprecedented. While it lacks the oomph of a completely new model, given that the iPad was refreshed in both March and October of 2012, it does at least give Apple something new on the market, and at 128GB, and presumably at the pricier end of the line-up, at the top of the market.

No word yet on 128GB versions of the iPad mini, or of the iPhone 5 or iPod touch 5.

Anyone compelled enough by big storage to consider a new purchase when/if he hit stores?
