Cellular versions of iPad 4 and iPad mini launching in China this Friday Posted: 14 Jan 2013 05:31 PM PST Apple has just announced that the Wi-Fi + cellular versions of the iPad mini and iPad 4 will be launching in China this Friday, January 18. According to Apple
The iPad line is currently available in more than 100 countries, but the Chinese market has become increasingly important for Apple, perhaps second only to the U.S. in short-term potential. Source: Apple |
Posted: 14 Jan 2013 05:13 PM PST I love Domeskin. They're like standard film skins but are thicker, giving them an almost 3D look and feel. I have been using them for a week and, at first, I put them on because of the beautiful look and matching wallpaper. Almost immediately after that, I came to appreciate Domeskin for the wonderful feel and extra grip they provide for my iPhone. With Domeskin, when I place my iphone on a surface, it will stay in place and I don't have to worry as much about it sliding to its doom, or being nudged into oblivion. It just stays. Also, the two Domeskin appliqués on the front of the iPhone make sure that your glass will be protected from scratches. That makes Domeskin not only much more fun than a regular skin, but more protective as well. The downside to Domeskin is that they are not able to be used in conjunction with most cases. If you have a loose fitting or stretchable case then you may be able to fit it over the Domeskin, but it still might be tight, and you'd still likely have trouble removing it. Think of a Domeskin in lieu of a case. (You can, however, remove a Domeskin and then reuse it later.) The good
The bad
ConclusionDomeskin are great for anyone who wants to liven up their iPhone, and get better grip, with more substance that a standard skin but nowhere near the bulk of most cases. Love them. More: Domeskin |

Facebook holding special event tomorrow, spurs rumors of Messenger for iPad, Facebook phone Posted: 14 Jan 2013 02:20 PM PST Facebook is holding an Apple-esque special event tomorrow, complete with mysterious "Come see what we're building" tag lines and rumors that run the gamut from a full on Facebook phone, either built on Android or as some new, budget smart-ish phone to let emerging markets share all their data, to new search engine to compete with Google, to a version of Facebook Messenger for iPad. Which means it could be nothing, a simple extension of what Facebook is already doing, or it could be something transformative, taking this planet's biggest social network into whole new orbits. There's no real way to tell until Zuckerberg et al. take the stage and show us what they've got. The event kicks off at 10am PT, 1pm ET. No word on a stream yet, but we'll be keeping an eye on things -- two, as often as we can spare them -- and will bring word on anything that impacts your iPhones, iPads, or social graphs. In the meantime, feel free to speculate. Any interest in Facebook Messenger for iPad? What would a Facebook phone have to offer to you to leave Apple and the iPhone? |
Cool Things: High Rez Nebula Wallpapers from NASA Posted: 14 Jan 2013 01:11 PM PST OK, I don't usually post about iPad wallpapers here except in regular weekend iPad wallpapers posts – but this is well worthy of an exception. The lovely folks at OS X Daily have highlighted a set of high resolution images of nebulas from NASA that are just spectacular. Quento for iPhone and iPad review Posted: 14 Jan 2013 01:13 PM PST Quento is a fun little math game that is a great challenge for all levels and ages. The objective is simple: use the available numbers and operations to get the indicated result with the indicated amount of numbers. However, not only are you restricted to the available numbers and operations, but you have to be able to create the expression by dragging your finger over them in one swipe -- and order of operations matters! Each puzzle is displayed as a 3x3 grid with five numbers and four operations. The operations are always addition or subtraction. Above the puzzle, you'll see the objectives, like to get an 8 with three numbers. Each level (number of numbers) has three goals and you get a star for each one you accomplish. Once you complete the level, you advance to the next one. After you complete a few rounds, a new "Free Play" mode will unlock. In Free Play, you are simply given a number and your goal is to get the number with any number of numbers that you wish. There are no stars to earn or levels to complete -- you simply try to get the indicated number with no pressure. Quento is a free game to download, but only includes levels for using 2 or 3 numbers in your expressions (about medium difficulty). To unlock puzzles using 4 or 5 numbers, you must make an in-app purchase of $0.99. If you get stuck on a puzzle, you can simply shake to give-up and start a new puzzle. The good
The bad
The bottom lineQuento is an excellent math puzzle game for all ages. Both young kids who are just learning to add and subtract and experienced mathematicians will enjoy Quento. Puzzle games like this are some of my favorite because, well, I'm a math nerd, and because they are great for your brain.

Updates to iOS and iCloud: More Important than New iPads This Year Posted: 14 Jan 2013 11:30 AM PST I love a shiny new device as much as the next guy. Probably a heck of a lot more than the next guy when it comes to a new iPad. So I'm as enthusiastic as anyone about the possibility of Apple change their release cycle for the iPad to twice a year and bringing us [...] This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Get your iMore, Iterate, and Debug t-shirts here Posted: 14 Jan 2013 10:01 AM PST We made some special edition iMore (gray), Iterate, and Debug t-shirts over the holidays as thank-yous for the hosts and staff, but enough of you asked about them that we decided to make them available for anyone and everyone who wants one. Since we don't want to get into the t-shirt business (at least not yet), we simply uploaded the designs to CafePress and are letting them do the heavy print-on-demand-and-ship lifting. We're also offering them at cost. That's right, no markup. We don't make a dime off of them. Our shows and sites are successful because of you, and if you enjoy them enough to want shirt, we're honored to provide them. They're all black, available in both men's and women's sizes. iMore features a gray version of our iconic logo in its new, 16:9 style. Debug and Iterate feature the podcast artwork in "worn"-looking blue and red respectively. I've received mine already, and they're terrific. I'll be wearing them at Macworld|iWorld. |
iPad Tips: How To Find Out How Much Storage Space Is Being Used by Photos Posted: 14 Jan 2013 09:14 AM PST Storage space is often at a premium on our computing devices, and especially on our mobile devices. The iPad is no exception and if you own one for long enough you'll likely have at least one occasion where you need to look at managing and freeing up storage space. PC Sales Continue to Shrink at the Hands of Tablets Posted: 14 Jan 2013 05:50 AM PST You don't need a table like the one above (courtesy of Gartner via Engadget) to see what's happening in tech sales today. You simply need to look around. More and more people are discovering that tablets – especially the iPad – are not only sufficient for the vast majority of their "computing" needs, they are in many cases superior. You see it on planes, in offices, coffee shops, homes, buses…everywhere. And the result is that PC sales are shrinking outright. Shrinking. Not growing more slowly, but shrinking. The incursion of tablets has offloaded so many activities from PCs that the reasons to upgrade a PC (or even a Mac…) are shrinking. On the hardware side, what most have is still good enough. On the software side it's been a while since Microsoft put any compelling new features into Windows. Windows 8 however marks a large shift in that OS, at least on the surface (ha). Its live-tile interface bears no resemblance to Windows 7 (even if the standard interface is a click away). And its in-built touch features are also a departure from prior desktop OS's. But so far it hasn't made a compelling case for itself in the marketplace. That could change soon. Once Windows 8 tablets (running full blown Windows, not RT) start shipping en masse sales will likely start to take off. I predict a rather large PC hardware upgrade cycle as people and corporations ditch XP-era hardware for Windows 8 units in the tablet form they've come to love in the iPad. Microsoft Surface isn't a bad piece of hardware, and running full blown Windows 8 should give it and its clones a strong footing in the marketplace. However, at 2 pounds and with a 4-5 hour battery life (and yes, those are the likely specs for the Surface Pro running full Windows 8) these things aren't going to dislodge the iPad overnight. In fact if anything I think they'll serve to push an explosion in sales of smaller and lighter tablets like the iPad mini, for use as companion devices, as people have come to want and expect as small and light a footprint as possible.
