MObile Nations Movember Week 3 Update: I got 99 problems but my Mo ain't one! Posted: 18 Nov 2012 08:41 PM PST Mobile Nations Network Movember Funds Raised so far: $9358 (USD) Is this a new boyband, or the MO-bile Nations crew in Winnipeg? Welcome to our third Mobile Nations Movember update. We're be bringing you these updates every Sunday throughout the month of Movember (formerly known as November) as we grow out our moustaches and raise awareness and funds for prostate cancer research and men's mental health issues. When we embarked upon our Mobile Nations Movember mission I thought it would be great if we could raise $10,000, and we're almost there! There's still a lot of Movember left, and we've already raised over $9,300. Maybe it's time to up our goals to $15k? The facial lip growth is really starting to blossom now, so hopefully we'll see the 'staches and the fundraising continue to accelerate right through to the end of the month. If you haven't donated yet, we'll love you forever if you do. Donations can be made easily over the web. Simply jump over to our Mobile Nations Network page, click on the name of any of the inidividuals listed as part of the network, and hit the donate button. All funds donated to an individual will pass through to the network total. Keep reading for more on Movember and to see some great moustache photos from the team!

iMessage and FaceTime down. Are you affected? Posted: 18 Nov 2012 01:46 PM PST iMessage and FaceTime are both experiencing outages according to Apple's iCloud system status page, and numerous reports flooding into iMore's various comm channels. Apple says service will be restored asap. Online continues to be a huge challenge for Apple, and if you haven't already, I invite you to read why I think it's going to be one of Apple's biggest challenges going forward. As always, let me know if iMessage and FaceTime are working for you, where you are, and when you get your service back. |

Posted: 18 Nov 2012 01:39 PM PST Kevin Michaluk, the chief media officer of Mobile Nations, and the founder of CrackBerry.com joins me tonight to talk about his month spent using the iPhone 5 as part of his "World Tour". What he loved, what he hated, and where he thinks Apple stacks up in their battle against Android, and against Windows Phone 8 and the upcoming BlackBerry 10. It's going to be brutal. Weekend iPad Wallpapers: More Gorgeous Landscapes Posted: 18 Nov 2012 10:15 AM PST This weekend's iPad wallpaper selections are more gorgeous landscapes. All of them are taken this week from the excellent Backdrops Retina Wallpaper app from the clever folks at interfacelift.com. The first choice is called Cariad and is by FuzzyPiggy. I grew up near a boat basin in Connecticut and I find this lovely image of sailboats very soothing. Hit the break for two more great iPad wallpapers for this weekend … (...) © patrickj for iPad Insight, 2012. | Permalink | One comment | Add to del.icio.us This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Posted: 18 Nov 2012 09:57 AM PST Well here's more proof that there's really no age barrier when it comes to the iPad. This baby seems pretty fascinated by the game she's checking out. Kevin Whiting added a little set of photos of his granddaughter and her reactions to the iPad to our iPad Insight Flickr group this week. The one shown above is titled Ha, ha I love this game. Hit the break for a couple more fun shots from this set … (...) © patrickj for iPad Insight, 2012. | Permalink | No comment | Add to del.icio.us This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Nintendo launches the Wii U, anyone putting their iPad down for it? Posted: 18 Nov 2012 09:20 AM PST Nintendo is launching their next-generation video game console today, the Wii U, and just like the last one, it seems to be garnering more than its fair share of incredibly mixed reviews. The bottom line on original Wii was "best selling console collecting dust on the shelf" as hard-core and online gaming went to Xbox, and casual gaming to iOS. Now, however, Nintendo has added it's own iPad-like tablet controller to the Wii U, along with HD graphics, and perhaps even better online services. Again, however, reviews are incredibly mixed. The Wii U tablet is sometimes a mirror, sometimes a second screen, but always a resistive touchscreen like phones pre-2007, difficult to use and flummoxing to understand. Nintendo's first party titles, including Mario, of course, are great, but good third party support is as questionable as always. I bought a Wii at launch and played it quite a lot at first, but haven't touched it in over a year. I'll be waiting on the Wii U. Gone are the days I'm willing to buy Nintendo kit no questions asked. They haven't kept up with the times as well as I wish they had. Never mind not making Mario for iOS, that's their right and decision, but the Wii U just looks like the wrong solution for modern gaming, especially with the "Xbox 720" and "PlayStation 4" on the way -- and iOS encroaching on the living room with AirPlay. It looks complex and confused, and I'd rather see where it's going before I put any money into it. Here are some reviews: Anyone picking up a Nintendo Wii U today? If so, let me know what you think of it! |
The Magazine Updated – Enhancements for iPad mini & More Posted: 18 Nov 2012 09:19 AM PST The Magazine: For geeks like us, Marco Arment's superb new iPad magazine that celebrates good writing, was updated this week – to Version 1.1. At the top of the update's change list is a bit of good news for iPad mini users:
I think The Magazine was already one of the better titles to read on the iPad mini, but any improvement is always welcome. Here's the remainder of the V 1.1 change list:
The Magazine is a genuinely unique title and a very refreshing approach to what an iPad magazine can be. It's good to see it improving and adding small features that are helpful while still keeping things simple and clean. Here's an App Store link for The Magazine; it's a free app with subscription available via In-App purchase. © patrickj for iPad Insight, 2012. | Permalink | No comment | Add to del.icio.us This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Brydge, Macbook Air-like iPad Keyboard Case: Starts Shipping Tomorrow Posted: 18 Nov 2012 08:56 AM PST Good news for those of you who backed the Brydge Kickstarter project. The latest update email to project backers says that shipping starts tomorrow – Monday November 19. The initial batch of units set to ship are those without stereo speakers. The company is hoping to have an update on shipping the units with speakers by the middle of next week. The Brydge is a very promising looking MacBook Air like iPad keyboard case that was big hit on Kickstarter and way exceed its funding target. I backed the project and I'm looking forward to seeing my Brydge – but I pledged for the model with speakers, so I guess I'll be waiting a little longer. I know we have some Brydge backers here – if you receive yours sometime this week please let us know what you think of it. © patrickj for iPad Insight, 2012. | Permalink | No comment | Add to del.icio.us This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
