Join in the Eurovision party with the official Eurovision app for iOS

Posted: 14 May 2013 01:41 PM PDT

This week sees Europe's annual cheese-fest, otherwise known as the annual Eurovision Song Contest. About this time every year, contenders from across Europe descend upon the nation that won the year before, and prepare to do battle in the Euro-pop arena. I'm not a fan myself, but plenty of folks are -- around 100 million people are expected to tune in to watch the contest live. And, to enhance the experience a little further, is the official Eurovision Song Contest app for iOS.

The app itself is actually a great companion to the main show. The first semi-final takes place today, and the live show tab has just come alive filled with information about all the artists taking part, and even lyrics to their songs should you want to sing along at home. And, if you really like a song, there's a handy link within the app to purchase the track from the iTunes Store. During the live show you also get the chance to cast your vote within the app, though for semi-finals this is limited to folks in countries that are participating on each night.

The main timeline acts like a social networking aggregator, bringing in photos and up to date news items relating to the show. Should you connect it to your Facebook and Twitter accounts though, you'll receive "important and interesting news updates" from the event right to your timeline.

While I'm no fan of the contest myself, the official app is actually pretty nicely done. It's well designed, smooth and snappy to use, and contains as much Eurovision goodness as you might be able to handle. Grab a copy from the App Store now, and if you're looking forward to the contest, tell us, who are you behind for the win?

ABC Player becomes Watch ABC, lets some users stream shows live

ABC Player becomes Watch ABC, lets some users stream shows live

ABC has updated its player app with a new name and live streaming capabilities, allowing a limited set of users to watch ABC programming live. While the rest of the app remains largely unchanged, still letting users stream previous episodes of ABC's shows, a new section called Live has been added to the toolbar. In most of the country, the section will simply let the user know that live streaming is not available in their area on the top half of the screen, and ABC's primetime schedule on the bottom half. For New York City and Philadelphia viewers however, live programming will be present, allowing them to watch live ABC programming on their iOS device as long as they remain within their city. ABC plans to expand the availability of live streaming in the near future.

Photo Stream, why so complicated?

Posted: 14 May 2013 11:33 AM PDT

Stuck between the Dropbox that was and the iCloud that isn't yet

Since the day I got my first Mac, I have greatly disliked iPhoto. In theory, it's an excellent application, but in practice, it's a slow unstable mess. The Mac, iPhone, and iPad are all excellent devices for viewing and editing photos in and of themselves, but why is it nearly impossible for all three of them to work together? And, more importantly, what should Apple do to improve the experience?

In theory, iPhoto for Mac is an incredible app. With it, you can organize your photos by Faces, Places, or Events and create albums. You can edit your photos with professional tools and apply effects. You can also share you photos directly to email, Facebook, and Flickr, create slideshows, and design books and cards to printed and delivered to your front door. And if you enable Photo Steam on your iPhone and iPad, all your photos will magically appear on your Mac.

Sounds amazing, right? Unfortunately, not quite.

I can go into great detail about how iPhoto for Mac always requires me to force quit upon initial launch; how Events makes my head spin; how Faces doesn't work as good as I'd like, and how I get confused about whether I need to import photos off my iPhone if I have a bunch of Photo Stream albums. Oh, and how iPhoto is the laggiest app on my Mac.

I could tell you all about these things, but instead I want to focus on iPhoto and Photo Stream in relation to all three devices: iPhone, iPad, and Mac, and how they don't work nearly as well together as they should.

On the surface, Photo Stream is awesome. All the photos I take with an iOS device automagically appear on my iPhone, iPads, and Macs. It makes sense, then, that since iPhoto is installed on all my devices, that those libraries should stay in sync through Photo Stream, right? Wrong.

Then there's the confusion of having both Camera Roll and Photo Stream. I understand that the Camera Roll stores all the photos taken locally with that device, but why do it this way? It gets confusing having the same photos in two places (or more, if you create albums), and it's even more confusing when it's time to import those photos into iPhoto on your Mac. Did Photo Stream already bring them to my Mac? And what about videos? Wait, Photo Stream doesn't stream videos. Bummer.

I believe the biggest hurdle that Apple would need to overcome to change this is the restriction of 1000 photos in Photo Stream at any given time. I already pay for more iCloud storage, so why not include iPhoto storage in that? I'd even be willing to pay an additional subscription for unlimited photo storage that worked seamlessly on all my Apple devices through iPhoto.

Developer and entrepreneur Peter Nixey shares the same sentiment as me and has come up with some great solutions for Apple. These include to store a canonical copy of iPhoto library in the cloud and and to charge for this service, to merge Camera Roll and Photo Stream into a single stream, to create an API for iCloud camera roll that can be connected to any camera, and to bring the iTunes magic to iPhoto; make it fast; make it clever; make it magical.

I completely agree.

What about you? Are you satisfied with how Photo Stream and iPhoto currently work, or do you want more? What would you like to see apple do with Photo Stream and iPhoto?

Pinterest for iPhone and iPad updated with push notifications for comments, likes, and repins

Pinterest for iPhone and iPad has been updated with a few new features including the ability to send a pin to someone (iPhone only) and push notifications for comments, likes, and repins, suggestions for search. You can also invite friends to pin with you on group boards, pin from the web, and mention your friends in comments.

Any Pinterest users out there? What do you think about this update? My favorite new feature is the ability to send a pin to someone -- been wanting to do that for awhile now, though I wish it was also supported for iPad.

Square announces Square Stand with integrated card reader and more

Square has just announced the Square Stand and made it available for pre-order which will begin shipping in July. The Square Stand now gives Square merchants the ability to not only secure their iPad to protect against theft, but has a card reader built right in along with the ability to pair with other Square hardware out of the box.

Part of the problem with using Square as a point of sale has been worrying about keeping track of an iPad you're using as a register and to prevent against theft. The Square Stand can be securely mounted to any surface and doesn't require an actual card reader to be plugged in.

The Square Stand will work with any existing Square hardware you already own including cash drawers, receipt printers, and bar code scanners. You can hit the link below to pre-order now.

Would you consider taking a look at this over your current favorite?

BlackBerry announces iOS support in enterprise service

BlackBerry announces iOS support in enterprise service

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em - that's the message from the BlackBerry Live conference in Orlando, Florida this week. The company has announced BlackBerry Enterprise Service (BES) 10.1 to extend security capabilities for iOS devices.

BES 10.1, which is now available for download, lets users manage BlackBerry smartphones as well as iOS and Android devices. But a previously announced feature, now in testing, will extend iOS support even more. "Secure Work Space" is a new function of BES 10.1 that provides a secure corporate connection for iOS and Android devices, without requiring any specific configuration changes to the device. Secure Work Space works using apps that BlackBerry plans to release through the App Store which includes secure e-mail, calendar, contacts, tasks, memos, browsing and document editing.

BlackBerry is currently testing Secure Work Space in closed beta and plans to release the feature.

You can get more details about this week's BlackBerry Live events at CrackBerry.

As of today, every major mobile competitor... also makes apps for iOS

As of today, every major mobile competitor... also makes app for iOS

A few minutes ago BlackBerry announced BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) for iOS. With that announcement, every single one of Apple's major mobile competitors now makes apps for iOS. Google, who also has Android, makes many very popular apps including Gmail, Maps, Google+, etc. Microsoft, who also has Windows Phone, makes a bunch of apps and games for iOS, including OneNote and Kinnectimals. Nokia, Microsoft's primary Windows Phone partner, also makes Here Maps.

Now, BlackBerry makes BBM.

Apple, by contrast, makes precisely nothing for Android, Windows Phone, or BlackBerry. Not even iTunes.

Interesting.

BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) coming to iOS this summer

Posted: 14 May 2013 08:06 AM PDT

BlackBerry Messaging (BBM) coming to iOS this summerBlackBerry announced Tuesday plans to release its BBM messaging service to iOS and Android devices this summer.

"You may ask, why is BlackBerry doing this now?" asked Thorsten Heims, BlackBerry CEO. "It's a statement of confidence...It's time for BlackBerry Messaging to become a platform-independent messaging solution."

BBM on iOS will feature messaging and group management first, but BlackBerry plans to roll out additional features over the rest of the year, including voice, screen sharing, video, and the newest feature, BBM Channels.

BlackBerry claims that BBM now has over 60 million monthly active users, with more than 51 million people using BBM an average of 90 minutes per day, so it's a very active messaging ecosystem.

System requirements will call for iOS devices running iOS 6 or later, and it'll be a free download - assuming Apple approves the app, of course. But given then availability of other messaging products for iOS, it seems unlikely there would be a problem.

Nokia joins the Aluminum brigade with the new Lumia 925

Posted: 14 May 2013 07:25 AM PDT

Being iPhone owners, we're suckers for beautifully designed smartphones. So, when Nokia took to the stage in London to showcase their latest and greatest, the Lumia 925, we had to go and take a look. Our buddies over at Windows Phone Central were on the ground throughout the event to bring us all the full story. So, what's the Lumia 925 all about?

The Lumia 925 is an aluminum clad device, packing an 8.7MP camera complete with Optical Image Stabilization. We know Nokia makes good cameras, and they're promising some hardware and software improvements so we'd expect the Lumia 925 to produce some pretty impressive photos. The iPhone 5 camera as we know produces some excellent photographs, so for mobile fans it's great news that camera technology is being pushed across the board.

Nokia is continuing to tie up with big name application developers too. Also announced today, Hipstamatic will be taking their new social-based photo platform, Oggl, to Lumia devices. Oggl has only just launched on iOS, and currently isn't available anywhere else.

Summing up the Lumia 925, Windows Phone Central editor-in-chief Daniel Rubino:

For those of you who dismissing this as just another 920, we'd suggest you reconsider. The phone feels like a Lumia 720 (which we love) but it has the 920 guts inside, making it a very compelling device for those who want a thinner, lighter phone. It's not an iteration of the 920, but "another expression" of it.

For the full story on the Lumia 925, be sure to pay a visit to Windows Phone Central. Let us know what you think of it in the comments below, does the Lumia 925 attract you in anyway? Could it tempt you from your iPhone?

Philips Hue smart LED bulbs just got a little smarter with latest iOS update

Posted: 14 May 2013 04:34 AM PDT

Philips Hue

Philips Hue, the smart LED light bulbs for your home, just got a little bit smarter alongside the latest update to the iOS app pushing out now through the App Store. Top of the order is the new Geofencing feature, which can activate a scene automatically when you're coming home, and turn it off when you leave.

Beyond the auto-activating scene features, they can now be turned on or off using a timer between 1 minute, and 59 minutes. And, when activating a scene, the lights will now change at exactly the same time. Pretty cool, and the LivingColors also get some attention with more vibrant colors.

To take advantage of the full new functionality, you'll want to grab a copy of the app from the App Store, but also make sure that your Hue Bridge is updated to the latest firmware. I haven't yet played with the Philips Hue set up, though it's something on the ever growing list of toys to add to my home. Hue owners should drop us a line in the comments, let us know how do you like these new features?

OneSafe password manager comes to the Mac, sync across your devices with iCloud

Posted: 14 May 2013 03:28 AM PDT

If you use a lot of passwords, a secure password manager can be indispensable. Since 2011, one such option for iOS users has been oneSafe. Keeping your passwords safe and synced across your iPhone and iPad is great, but until now oneSafe has been lacking in one area. That though changes with the launch of the brand new oneSafe app for the Mac.

Like the iOS version, oneSafe for Mac is iCloud enabled, meaning now you can sync all of your information across all of your devices. It's pretty much the missing link in the chain, for anyone who uses these apps seriously will likely need them on the desktop as well. The same 256-bit encryption is employed in the Mac version, as are all of the popular features from oneSafe for iOS.

The Mac version does come with some new goodies, though. A new drag-and-drop system has been employed allowing users the ability to pick up any file from anywhere on their Mac and just place it into oneSafe for quick and easy importing. The automatic backup feature will also come in handy, making sure you're covered if you ever lose your data.

The iOS version of oneSafe recently got updated to add support for the Mac client, so if you haven't picked that up yet you'll want to head into the App Store and pick it up. The Mac version of oneSafe is available to download via the Mac App Store priced at $12.99 for everyone running OS X 10.8.0 and above. But, we want to hear from you, oneSafe users. How do you like the new Mac client?
