Selection of Star Wars games reduced in the Mac App Store, grab them quick!

Posted: 06 May 2013 02:59 AM PDT

If it passed you by, this past Saturday was Star Wars day -- May the 4th be with you. To celebrate, all Star Wars games published by Aspyr Media were slashed in price in the Mac App Store. This is a limited time offer, but those of you who didn't see this over the weekend still have a chance to grab them.

The games are still reduced as it stands at the moment, but they won't be around at this price for long. The cheapest games to be had are the Star Wars Jedi Knight titles, both of which are reduced down to $3.99. There's a good chance that some point today will see the prices return to normal, but we've got your download links to all the reduced titles below.

Editor's desk: Escape from New York!

Editor's desk: Escape from New York

I did it, I escaped from New York! After spending three of the last four weeks at the temporary Mobile Nations HQ in NYC, trying my best to get all the #TM13 prep work done, as well as keeping up with the daily iMore grind of news, views, and podcasts, I'm home at last. Luckily, in addition to our already rock-solid (and rock-star!) cast, we had Peter Cohen join us full-time last week, and Richard Devine starts full-time this week. The timing couldn't be any better, because, frankly, it's going to be one hell of a summer.

Next Sunday I'm off again, this time to Orlando to help Kevin Michaluk and crew produce CrackBerry Live from the show floor of BlackBerry Live. Yeah, only Nixon could go to China...

After that, I'll be back for a couple of weeks, then returning briefly to New York City, and then it's on to the main event -- WWDC 2013. That's where we should all of us our first look at iOS 7 and OS X 10.9. I can't wait. I doubt Apple is on full-on Snow Leopard mode with iOS, at least not yet, but with a new team in place comes new thinking, and it seems like going into year seven, that's just the kind of thinking everyone who loves iOS wants to see.

That's the broad strokes, here are the bullet points.

  • This whole "Tim Cook should be fired" meme is the dumbest Apple thing I've seen in the long history of dumb Apple things. I don't care who you are, what degree you have, or who pays your salary, if you're writing "Tim Cook should be fired" you're either stupid, corrupt, or stupidly corrupt, and you should be fired by any editor with any ounce of self-respect left. Sadly, that's fewer and farther between these days. Makes me wonder who's agenda those articles are really servicing?

  • I shot a lot with my DSLR over the last couple of weeks, and every time I lament the lack of cellular wireless and all the terrific processing and sharing apps I have on my iPhone. There's a Galaxy Camera, of course, which is basically a lens grafted to a Galaxy S3, but that's Android. I don't see Apple licensing out iOS any time soon-as-in-ever, or iPhone cameras getting support for discreet lenses, or any rumors of an iCamera any time soon, but damn if I don't want one. Questions is, would it have any mainstream appeal?

  • I saw Google Glass a few times over the last week. I even experienced being filmed by it. It was as awkward watching it as I presume people feel wearing it, but every new thing is awkward at first. I don't know if the future is filled with visors for everyone, but I do like the promise of wearable technology. I'd be delighted to try Google Glass, but I'm not sure I'd be delighted by Google Glass, at least not yet. I'm not sure Google's nailed the implementation -- this could be more Lisa than Mac, more Treo than iPhone -- but that's why early days are early. Imagine a better looking, more mainstream version made by, dare I say it, a company we can better trust?

  • Iron Man 3 was good. I liked it more than I thought I would. The humor I feared gone was plentiful, the set pieces outstanding, and while a couple of the choices were potentially off-putting enough that I'm still undecided on them, overall Shane Black delivered in Lethal Weapon-like fashion. Now all they need to do is sign Downey Jr. for Avengers 2 and Iron Man 4...

House party's over. Time to clean the slate!

Vine is so compelling it gets CrackBerry Kevin back on iPhone!

Posted: 05 May 2013 11:29 AM PDT

Vine is the Harry Potter-esque short moving picture app for iPhone acquired and launched by Twitter. Kevin Michaluk is the founder of Blackberry-focused website CrackBerry, and the chief media officer of Mobile Nations. The universe seemed to have ordained that never the two should meet. But someone found Kevin's iPhone, charged it, installed Vine, forced it into his BlackBerry Q10-cold, clawed hand, and somehow showed Kevin how to use it.

Turns out he's pretty damn good at it too. Here's what he's been up to.

And that just goes to show you, there are still iPhone-only apps so compelling they can get pretty much anyone back on the platform, at least for a while, at least until the novelty wears off, or the app gets ported.

I'm not sure how long Vine stays interesting for him, or for anyone right now. I've played with it a bit, but haven't used it much lately. We'll see how long Kevin lasts. As much as I just poked fun at the still app-starved other platforms, when (not if) Vine lands on Android, BlackBerry, and Windows Phone, like Twitter itself, usage will likely skyrocket. Communications thrives when it's accessible by everyone.

Let me know if you're using Vine, how much, and what if anything could make it even more useful to you?

Incredible iPad Paintings

Flamenco Brushes 2

I've been fascinated with the incredible paintings being created on iPads and iPhones for years now. There is more and more fantastic art being created on iPads by digital artists and also by established and acclaimed traditional artists – like Britain's David Hockney, just to cite one quick example.

I even run a little baby site devoted to just iPad and iPhone art. I rarely get time to update it lately though and I think I'm going to start sharing some iPad art here on iPad Insight on a regular basis. I am hoping some of you will share my admiration for the wonderful images being created on our favorite tablet device.

As a start, I'll share some favorite iPad paintings each weekend, either instead of or in addition to a weekend iPad wallpapers post.  This week's picks start with the image shown above – 'Flamenco' by Woon Tien David Chong, created with the Brushes 2...

Penultimate iPad App Updated: Smart Titles, New Sync Options & More, But Also Causes Problems

Posted: 05 May 2013 06:59 AM PDT

Penultimate

The popular Penultimate handwriting app for iPad and iPhone was updated a few days ago, to Version 4.1. The update adds handful of new features related to notebooks, sync and sign-in – but it has also caused some problems. The developers are aware of the issue and have acknowledged it in the update notes:

NOTE: This version contains an issue that either requires too-frequent sign in, or sometimes a hang. A fixed update is coming shortly. Our apologies.

The app was recently acquired by Evernote and the new features in this update are all about connections to Evernote. There are suggested (or smart) notebook titles, based on location and calendar events – just as the Evernote app does with notes; and notebook covers now display the location for when they were last edited.

New sync options allow users a little control over how Penultimate syncs with Evernote. You can pause sync...

Here are your WWDC 2013 iPhone and iPad wallpapers in full on Retina splendor!

Here are your WWDC 2013 iPhone and iPad wallpapers in full Retina splendor!

WWDC 2013 has been announced, and that means there's a logo and a lot of people trying desperately to read its tea leaves. Jokes on them -- logos don't steep well at all. What they do do, however, is look awesome on iPhones and iPads. So rather than try to measure the exact flatness of any of the gradients contained therein, I'm content to do what we usually do when these kinds of things come out -- make them into wallpapers.

Here's the WWDC 2013 logo sized for Retina iPad and iPhone 5. If you have a non-retina iPad 2 or iPad mini, or a 2:3 aspect ratio iPhone 4 or 4S, no worries, they'll scale and crop just fine. To get them on your device, just save them to your Camera Roll, go to the built in Photos app, tap on them, and choose them as your Lock screen wallpaper, Home screen wallpaper, or both.

The white version for iPhone is below. Since bandwidth for the larger image files can get nuts, we're hosting the iPad version, as well as iPhone and iPad versions in black (my personal preference) on the iMore wallpaper forum.

If you don't already have an account, it's free, and you can log in with Twitter, Facebook, Microsoft, or Google so there's zero overhead, and zero reason not to head on over there now, grab your WWDC wallpapers, and for nostalgia buffs, a bunch of other retro Apple event wallpapers as well (like the oft-requested iPad mini event wallpaper.

Enjoy, and don't forget to post a screenshot of your iPhone or iPad sporting its new dubdub duds!
