New iPhone commercial focuses on Photos Every Day

Posted: 25 Apr 2013 08:20 PM PDT

Apple has aired a new iPhone commercial, Photos Every Day, which unlike previous, recent commercials, eschews cheery music, chanting, and a rapid fire parade of apps to focus on the camera and camera apps, and on capturing those special moments, at a variety of times, in a variety of places, under a variety of conditions.

It's an interesting change. At first glance, it might seem like a reaction to something like the Nokia Lumia 920 or the HTC One, both of which boast optical image stabilization (OIS), among other technologies, that help improve photos under low-light when subjects are relatively stationary.

However, neither of those phones will likely sell in any meaningful numbers compared to the iPhone. The just-launched Samsung Galaxy S4, on the other hands, is just as mass-market, and aimed just as much at "everyday" photography as the iPhone.

I spent much of the last week shooting photos with Alex Dobie as he prepared for his Galaxy S4 review, and while he called it the best all-around Android camera to date, to my eyes the iPhone 5 still out-shot it under a wider range of conditions, including and especially in low-light. Like the phone itself, it came off as spec-heavy but ultimately scattered and soul-less.

Opinions on that can and will vary, however, which is likely why we're getting this commercial now, and in this way. Apple's taking the competition seriously, and they're putting out a serious ad to address it.

And once again, they're doing it very, very well.

Little Red Riding Hood by Nosy Crow for iPhone and iPad review: Help Little Red Riding Hood fight off the Big Bad Wolf

Posted: 25 Apr 2013 06:41 PM PDT

Nosy Crow has released an interactive story book of their version of the Little Red Riding Hood featuring fully-animated illustrations multiple paths that let you take control of the story.

Little Red Riding Hood by Nosy Crow is the same story we all know and love, but instead the gruesome part where the Huntsman rescues Grandma and Red by cutting them out of Wolf's stomach, Little Red Riding Hood collects items on her way to Grandma's house and uses them to fend off the Wolf herself. And Grandma is simply locked in a wardrobe, unharmed. Much more appropriate for children!

One of the great features of Little Red Riding Hood is that you get to have control over some of the story. Three different times, Red encounters a fork in the rode and much choose which direction to go. The choice you make for her determines what you end up helping her collect along the way.

In my version, Little Red Riding hood picked flowers that she used to make the Wolf sneeze, scooped water into a jar that she threw in the Wolf's face, and rescued a spider that ultimately scared the Wolf away.

The good

  • Great graphics, animations, and artwork
  • Very interactive
  • Nine different games and activities embedded in the story
  • Hundreds of interactive touch points
  • Text highlighting to help young readers
  • Universal for iPhone and iPad

The bad

  • Not a fan of the little highlights that show you where to tap. I prefer kids discovering where to tap on their own.
  • If you choose the spider path, you have to tilt the screen to help the spider through the web maze, but it doesn't work very well. After struggling for a bit, I was informed I could use my finger, so that's good.

The bottom line

I love this book. My daughter loves this book. If you have kids, Little Red Riding Hood by Nosy Crow is a keeper.

Instapaper sold to Betaworks

Instapaper sold to Betaworks

Marco Arment, creator of popular read-it-later service Instapaper, has sold a majority stake in the service to Betaworks. Arment was concerned that he alone was not able to give Instapaper the attention that it needed going forward, determining that to remain healthy, it would need a full team of developers.

Instapaper is much bigger today than I could have predicted in 2008, and it has simply grown far beyond what one person can do. To really shine, it needs a full-time staff of at least a few people. But I wouldn't be very good at hiring and leading a staff, and after more than five years, I'd like an opportunity to try other apps and creative projects. Instapaper needs a new home where it can be staffed and grown, but I didn't want to give it to a big company that would probably just shut it down in six months.

Betaworks is also the owner of the Digg brand, which they purchased last July. Arment has said that he will continue to advise the development of Instapaper indefinitely, while Betaworks takes over the day-to-day operations and workload. He says that Betaworks will be a good home for Instapaper, and they will be able to give it the attention that it deserves.

Save Gotham City in Lego Batman: DC Super Heroes for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch

Posted: 25 Apr 2013 04:01 PM PDT

The DC Comics universe has come together on iOS in the newly released Lego Batman: DC Super Heroes, now available in the App Store for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. The iOS version is based on the 2012 videogame of the same name, and brings the same great experience to the touchscreen.

The Caped Crusader and Boy Wonder are joined in their quest to save Gotham City this time by a bunch of other characters from the DC universe. Superman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, all join the fight against the likes of Lex Luthor, The Joker, Harley Quinn and The Riddler. All in all 80 different playable characters are available either by way of in-app purchases or by playing through the games numerous levels. The control system comes with a 'classic' and a 'touchscreen' mode, and it's a pretty fine playing experience in the touchscreen environment.

The Lego series of games offers a lighter side to many different franchises, and Batman is no different. There's just something about playing it Lego form that makes beating on the bad guys less violent. We've only been playing it a short time, but if you're into comic books, super heroes, or just like great looking, great playing mobile games, you'll want to take a look at this. It's a huge download, but if you give it a try be sure to jump into the comments and let us know what you think.

How to sort podcasts in the Podcasts app for iPhone and iPad

The Podcasts app for iPhone and iPad can aggregate all your favorite podcasts in one place for you to enjoy whenever you'd like. However, if you subscribe to quite a few, sorting them the way you'd like may be important. Luckily, you have a few options.

Here's where to find them:

How to sort podcasts in the My Podcasts section

  1. Launch the Podcasts app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on the My Podcasts tab if it isn't already selected.
  3. Scroll to the very top of the list if you aren't already there.
  4. Now pull down a little further just like you would in Mail or any other app that has a rubber band effect to reveal a search menu.
  5. Next to the search bar, tap on the Edit button.
  6. You may now drag podcasts in any order you'd like. Just tap Done when you're finished sorting.

How to change the sort order of a particular podcast playlist

  1. Launch the Podcasts app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on the My Podcasts tab if it isn't already selected.
  3. Tap on the name of the podcast you'd like to change the sort order for.
  4. Now top on the Settings button.
  5. Here you can change the sort order for how you'd like podcast episodes to appear within the episodes list and how you'd like them to play.

Prototype Siemens connected lifestyle application shows off their vision of the connected kitchen

Posted: 25 Apr 2013 02:45 PM PDT

One thing that stood out at the recent IFA Global Press Conference in Sardinia, was that connected home appliances are definitely headed our way. We've seen such things as an Android powered oven, but Siemens looks set to connect the whole kitchen in the next couple of years.

What they had to show was a prototype of a future connected lifestyle app, which will offer the facility to control all of your household appliances from your iOS device. On the face of it, it seems such a simple idea, but it's still pretty interesting to see. Within one app, you'll be able to control your washing machine, dishwasher, coffee machine, oven, pretty much the whole kitchen.

For example, their connected refrigerator will take a photograph of the main shelves and of the door every time the door closes. The contents are then viewable from within the iOS app, and it's even smart enough to help decide upon recipes based on what's in your fridge. If you're short on something for that recipe, it'll tell you what you need to pick up from the store. When you're ready to cook, it'll help you set the oven to cook for the right amount of time at the right temperature.

It also works for diagnostics and customer care too. Video calling is built in, so should one of your appliances develop a fault, you can call through to customer care from within the app. They then access your appliance remotely, determine the fault, and if possible action it from their end.

The video above gives a quick rundown, although as this is a prototype we're not looking at seeing this come to life any time soon. Siemens told us that they expect to be shipping the connected appliances within 2 years, by which time things may get yet more advanced. The kitchen may not be the most glamorous application for mobile tech, but it's a room we all use daily. It makes perfect sense that it, too, should become part of our mobile connected lifestyles.

Pangea's iOS games free until Friday morning

Looking for some fun games for your iOS device, but don't want to pony up any cash for them? Pangea Software has you covered. They've released all of their iOS games for free, but act fast, because on Friday morning they go back to their usual prices, anywhere from $1 to $4 each.

Pangea Software has been making games for Apple devices for decades, but they jumped on the iOS development bandwagon early on, bringing forth iOS versions of their Mac games like the flying action game Nanosaur 2, the 50s-era sci fi 3D platformer Otto Matic, and the cart racer Cro-Mag Rally. Since then, they've added plenty of iOS originals to the mix.

Recently the company has focused on "freemium" fare that's free to download but unlocked with additional features using In App Purchases. Still, the company's back catalog of games includes a number of fun titles that still cost money to download and play.

The complete list of free games includes:

  • Monkey Bongo
  • Billy Frontier
  • Jive Turkey Shoot
  • Cro-Mag Rally
  • Warheads
  • Enigmo
  • Enigmo 2
  • Enigmo Deluxe
  • Nucleus
  • Air Wings
  • Air Wings Intergalactic
  • Nanosaur 2
  • Bugdom 2
  • Otto Matic
  • Quarters!!
  • Antimatter

Twitter for Mac finally goes Retina, upgrades Tweet composer on the way

Posted: 25 Apr 2013 01:18 PM PDT

Twitter for Mac

The official Twitter for Mac application hasn't seen an update in a while, but the one that dropped today brings something that has been long overdue. The headline feature upgrade is that now, Twitter for Mac is finally Retina Display ready, meaning it looks oh so much better on the Retina MacBook Pro range. And it really does.

Beautifying the app isn't all that's gone on though. In addition, the app icon and iconography has been updated, and the Tweet Composer has been given some love with a new design and the ability to post pictures to Twitter's own picture service.

And, for folks that need certain languages, Twitter for Mac now supports an additional 14 of them. To grab yourselves a copy and to check out the list in full head on into the Mac App Store. If you're a Twitter for Mac user on a Retina Mac, be sure to let us know how you like it in the comments below.

WWDC tickets go on sale, sell out in two minutes

WWDC tickets go on sale, sell out in two minutes

The tickets for this WWDC 2013 have come and gone in record time, with passes for this year's event selling out in an astounding two minutes, after going on sale at 10 AM Pacific. The speed at which the tickets sold out can at least be partially attributed to the fact that Apple pre-announced when they woud go on sale, something that they haven't done in past years.

The time that it has taken for WWDC tickets to sell out every year has decreased steadily for a number of years. Last year's tickets sold out in two hours, and while many expected them to move even faster this year, it's doubtful that anyone expected them to go quite this quickly.

Did you plan on buying a ticket? Did you manage to get one, or did you just miss it?

Tim Cook auctions off coffee with himself for charity

Tim Cook is holding an auction for coffee and conversation with himself on Apple's campus for charity. The terms of the deal state that the meeting will last between thirty minutes and an hour, and will cover two people. The auction is being run through Charitybuzz.

Bid now on this unique opportunity to have coffee with Apple CEO Tim Cook at Apple headquarters.

The bidding at this time stands at $190,000, well above the $50,000 estimated by the auction site. It's a rare opportunity to sit down with CEO of the world's most valuable technology company. Tim Cook often donates to charitable causes, and encourages others at Apple to do the same. The proceeds of the auction will go to benefit the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights.

Apple celebrates ten years of the iTunes Store with special iTunes section

The iTunes Store turns 10 this Sunday, April 28, and Apple is celebrating with a new area in the store chronicling a decade of selling music, movies, TV, and apps. "A Decade of iTunes" commemorates the store's milestones in a separate section for each year.

Celebrate 10 years of iTunes-a decade marked by stunning musical and technological evolution. From the historic iPod releases to the debut of groundbreaking artists, our timeline captures key moments in our history. Plus, take a look back at the defining albums and songs that hit the top of the charts each year.

The iTunes Music Store debuted at a time when music piracy was rampant, and it gave people a safe, reliable, and legal way of purchasing music for a reasonable price. Overtime, Apples has added movies and TV shows, along with the App Store. While subscription services like Spotify and Rdio have proven popular with many, iTunes still remains the top music retailer in the world, and its importance to the current age of digital music can't be overstated.

AltWWDC planned for same time as the "real" WWDC

Posted: 25 Apr 2013 01:01 PM PDT

AltWWDC planned for same time as the "real" WWDC Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) tickets sold out in minutes, but if you're going to be in San Francisco the second week of June, there's an alternative event happening that you may be interested in. AltWWDC is scheduled to take place at the same time as WWDC, and only a block away from the Moscone Center, where WWDC is held. What's more, it's free.

WWDC is the brainchild of Rob Elkin and Judy Chen, who created the event in 2012 after WWDC tickets sold out in record time. This year they're joined by Josh Michaels and Kyle Kincaid, who created two other alternative events, Intersection and IndieDevLab.

AltWWDC runs from June 10 - 14, 2013 at the downtown campus of San Francisco State University. Talks, lunch and coworking space for developers will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. You don't need a WWDC badge to attend. So far, confirmed speakers include Mike Lee, Victor Agreda, Jr., Brett Terpstra, Brent Simmons, Saul Mora, and Steve "Scotty" Scott. More announcements are expected, so be sure to visit the site for details.

Were you disappointed with how fast WWDC tickets sold out this year? Does AltWWDC interest you?

iPad + Extreme Case: 8 Story Drop, No Worries

Posted: 25 Apr 2013 10:17 AM PDT

Holy Crazy Tough iPad case Batman. These guys at GizmoSlip dropped an iPad 3 in a G-Form Extreme case from the top of an 8 story building, screen down onto cement.

And the iPad still works. The screen is coming up just a little from the frame and there's some multitouch 'glitchiness' – but it works.

I'd say if you're after a durable iPad case you might want to give this one a look, even if you're not planning for any drops from 8 story buildings.

The 3 Fastest Ways to Get Photos from an iPad to a Mac or Windows PC

Posted: 25 Apr 2013 09:57 AM PDT

Photo Transfer App

If you've got photos and images on your iPad that you want to transfer to a Mac or Windows PC there are a number of ways you can go about it. Today I'd like to offer a quick rundown of a few methods that I find to be the easiest and the fastest by far:

Here they are:

Photo Transfer App

Photo Transfer App does just what its name would suggest. It has a easy to use interface with no extra bells and whistles – and just makes it fast and simple to transfer photos between your iPads, iPhones, and computers on a local WiFi network.

The app costs $2.99 and can be installed on both the iPad and the iPhone.

To transfer photos to your Mac or Windows PC you open Photo Transfer App, select the Send button (shown above) and then select which sort of device you want to send to – Windows computer, Mac computer, or another iOS or another device (an iOS or Android mobile device).

Fandango iPad app

The Fandango Movies app for iPad and iOS was updated yesterday, to Version 5.6.

The headline new feature in Version 5.6 for the iPad version of the app is the ability to scroll through movie photos and videos in full screen. I've tried this out and it's good fun to go through these galleries for movies you're interested in.

The remainder of the change list for this update is not terribly exciting:

• Feeling social? Sign into your Fandango account to manage Facebook sharing
• Visa Signature account holders – save your card for faster ticket purchasing & access to special offers with TIXPRESS™! (iPhone only)
• General bug fixes & usability enhancement

Fandango Movies is a best of class iPad app and one of our picks for The Best iPad Apps of 2012

Zendesk iPad App Looks Great

Posted: 25 Apr 2013 08:00 AM PDT

Zendesk iPad app

Zendesk is a leading cloud based software solution for customer service, used by over 25,000 companies. They've recently updated the Zendesk iPad and iOS apps and they were kind enough to give me a demo of the iPad app a couple weeks ago.

I came away from the demo hugely impressed with the Zendesk iPad app, both as someone who reviews a lot of iPad apps and as someone who spent years working in technical support and network management.

Th first thing that struck me about the app is how great a job the developers have done in keeping the UI clean and elegant while packing in a slew of useful features that are all accessible with just a few taps.

Here are some of the more notable features of the app:

  • Access to all support ticket views
  • View all support ticket events and notifications
  • Real-time list of activity on tickets
  • Search support tickets and knowledge base...
