New Apple ad kicks competitors right in the music Posted: 23 May 2013 07:24 PM PDT Turns out that spectacular Photos Every Day ad Apple released last month was just the first in a new series, as today they've introduced Music Every Day and it's every bit as terrific. Like the previous spot, Music Every Day shows people using the iPhone to enjoy music. Many and different people in many and different ways. It's not caricatures feuding at a wedding, or acting stupidly at a pool party, or rushing to do something or be somewhere they won't even remember a week later. It's people living their lives, and those lives made better in small, constant ways by Apple. Like Every Day Photos, Every Day Music shot just as beautifully, mixed just as subtly, but this time highlights the iPhone as every bit the inheritor of the iPod, and cultural icon it's become. I might be overly predisposed to love this spot at the moment, what with all the bitter Apple-is-doomed BS of the last few months, and the cheery but forgettable ads that predated this series, but with both those things as palette cleansers, these last two ads come off especially sweet. This is an Apple returned to their marketing savvy of old, once again at the height of their commercial powers. Hopefully they keep it up. |
Jon Stewart pokes fun at Senate, Apple, over tax hearings, highlights bigger problems in tax code Posted: 23 May 2013 01:44 PM PDT On last night's Daily Show, host Jon Stewart took time to make fun the United States Senate, as well as Apple, over the testimony given by CEO Tim Cook on Tuesday with regard's to Apple's tax practices. Stewart took Senators to task for their positive treatment of Apple and pointed out the flaws in Tim Cook's call to simplify the corporate tax code, while also poking fun at Maps and the infamous iTunes End User License Agreement. As usual for The Daily Show, the segment is very funny. Check out the video below. Source: The Daily Show |
Evernote iPad App Updated: Adds Reminders & More Posted: 23 May 2013 01:02 PM PDT The Evernote app for iPad and iPhone has been updated today, to Version 5.3. This update adds Reminders as a new feature which lets you pin notes to the top of your list to help you remember those that are most important. You can also add due dates and receive notifications in the app and via email, and mark notes as Done when you've completed them. Here are the remaining items on the change list for this update:
For those who use Evernote for task and to-do tracking the new reminders features should prove hugely useful. I rarely use Evernote that way, but I... This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
How to download iTunes U assignments and course material to iBooks for iPhone and iPad Posted: 23 May 2013 12:31 PM PDT iTunes U makes it easy to download and subscribe to any courses you'd like. While not all courses come with assignments and material, some do. If you decide you'd like to complete assignments or want to download additional material, here's how to find out if any is available in iTunes U and download it directly to iBooks.
That's all there is to it. Unfortunately there isn't a way to save assignments with courses within the iTunes U app but saving them to iBooks is a means to an end and the next best thing. After you've opened the assignments and/or course material within iBooks, it'll be saved there for as long as you like and until you'd like to delete it. |
The Loop Magazine #2 hits (virtual) shelves, and you might just recognize some of the writers... Posted: 23 May 2013 12:12 PM PDT My iPhone rang. I answered. There was the laugh. The one that emanates from the beard. "Hi Jim!" I was then told I'd be writing an article for The Loop Magazine and I'd have it done by Sunday. I was and I did. And Jim and Peter were crazy enough not to reject it. So here we are. Issue 2. Lots of smarter people in this one as well -- Joe King, Matt Gemmell, Stephen Hackett, Matthew Panzarino, and the aforementioned Peter Cohen - writing smart stuff. If you've already subscribed, just dive into Newsstand, tap the Loop Magazine cover, and download the new issue. If not, there's no better time to give it a try.

Posted: 23 May 2013 12:03 PM PDT AT&T has quietly added a new administrative fee that is now appearing on the bills of postpaid customers. The fee is for $0.61 and shows up as a line item under the surcharges and other fees section. According to The Verge who spoke with AT&T, the new fee was enacted help cover expenses for items such as cell sites and maintenance. If you're a postpaid customer, you'll see the new charge on your bill starting with bills that are cut after May 1st of this year. With AT&T's subscriber base of over 70 million users, AT&T will see an increase in revenue of almost half a billion a year.
Carriers calculate fees differently with some bundling them into other categories. Compared to Verizon and Sprint, AT&T's fees are slightly lower. While $0.61 doesn't seem like a lot of money per customer, it ends up being a very healthy amount when collected from all subscribers. If you have AT&T, did you see the charge appear on your most recent bill? If you have another carrier, how much money do you currently pay in surcharges and fees? Source: The Verge |
Instapuzzle for iPhone review: Unscramble your Instagram photos in this fun puzzler Posted: 23 May 2013 11:39 AM PDT Instapuzzle for iPhone is a fun little game that cuts up Instagram photos into little square, scrambles them, and leaves it to you reassemble. The goal is to put the photo back together in as little moves and as quickly as possible. Instapuzzle lets you play with your own Instagram photos as well with those taken by your friends, ones you've liked, and ones from a featured tag (this is currently #hoops). To play the Instapuzzle, you simply slide the the tiles to the appropriate place. If you put a tile in the correct spot, the progress bar will advance, indicating that it's correct. However, there is no indication on the tile itself, so you must make a mental note when one is where it should be. You will also see a timer and ticker that keeps track of the number of moves you've made. If you get stuck, you can use a hint to see what the original photos looks like. There are 5 hints included for free, with more available as in-app purchases. Instapuzzle also includes sections where you can view your personal stats including the number of puzzles you've solved, how much time you've spent playing, and the distanced you've moved. You can also view all your high scores broken down by difficulty. Instapuzzle includes 3 different difficulty levels: easy, medium, and hard. Easy cuts the photo up into 16 square, Medium is 25 squares, and Hard is 36 squares. The good
The bad
The bottom lineIf you're looking for a fun new way use your Instagram photos, Instapuzzle is great game. It's a very simple idea for a game, but the developers did an awesome job of putting it together; Instapuzzle is very polished.

Strapped for cash? Here are the best prepaid iPhone plans in the U.S.! Posted: 23 May 2013 11:06 AM PDT iMore compares the best pre-paid iPhone plans available on AT&T, T-Mobile, H2O, Cricket, Straight Talk, and more! Taking your iPhone to a prepaid plan can save you quite a bit of cash and if you live in the United States, there are quite a few options these days. Whether you're a talker, texter, or web surfer, there's something to be had for everyone when it comes to moving to a prepaid plan. Some may require tweaking a few settings to get things like picture messaging fully up and running, but if you need to save some cash or just don't fancy signing contracts, prepaid is a great option. Let's take a closer look at some options across all the major iPhone compatible prepaid carriers in the United States. Check for coverageThe most important aspect of choosing a carrier, prepaid or not, is whether or not there's good coverage in your area. We'd suggest checking coverage maps for each respective carrier so you can eliminate ones that are sub-par or non-existent where you spend most of your time. That'll ultimately make the decision a lot easier.
Once you've decided which carriers actually have good coverage in your area and which ones you can immediately rule out, you can start looking at what plans are actually available to you. Unlimited everything prepaid plansIf you're looking for a completely unlimited plan on prepaid, there are actually quite a few options out there. T-Mobile is the most expensive option for unlimited everything but is the only one that comes with WiFi hotspot functionality. If you plan on using your iPhone to tether other devices such as your iPad or computer where WiFi isn't available, T-Mobile is the only unlimited option. Straight Talk is the cheapest option available and runs off AT&T's network, so if your area is known to have good coverage with AT&T, Straight Talk is the best option if you don't need tethering functionality. Straight Talk also offers an unlimited plus international plan that allows you to call and text to outside the United States. It'll cost you a little more but is probably worth it if you intend on calling out of the country. This obviously doesn't mean you can travel internationally, and only includes calls and texts outside the country made from within the United States. Net 10 and Cricket Wireless also have international plans available that are about on par with Straight Talk. However, Cricket only offers the feature up for text, not voice. For most people, choosing a carrier, even prepaid, should always depend on what coverage is like in your area. Coverage aside, T-Mobile is the best deal and the only option if you want tethering while Straight Talk offers the most value and makes the most sense for people who need international options. Tiered prepaid plansIf you don't need unlimited data and/or talk and text, you can get off a little cheaper yet. If Net 10 is available in your area, you can get dirt cheap unlimited data for $25 a month. You'll also get unlimited text and 720 minutes. It's a pretty good deal and if you aren't a big talker, it's a nice option. Just be aware that your data will be slowed down after a meer 1.5GB according to Net 10's terms of service. H2O doesn't have any unlimited data plans that we could find with their plans topping out at 2GB. We also couldn't find any information on whether or not they will cap speeds after using a certain amount. However, if you talk and text more than anything, H2O has some good options if you don't plan on using a lot of data. For heavy data users who don't really care about minutes at all, Virgin Mobile offers unlimited data and text on every plan they have. For as little as $35 a month you can get unlimited data and text with the tradeoff being only 300 minutes. If you're okay with watching your minutes, it's a good option. If you talk and text a lot, but don't need a ton of data, either H2O or T-Mobile are your best bets. If you're the opposite, Virgin Mobile is worth a hard look since all their plans come with unlimited data and text. The bottom lineWhen it comes to choosing a prepaid carrier, all of the above have their advantages and disadvantages. For the most part, T-Mobile and Straight Talk will have the best nationwide coverage. Cricket, H2O, and Virgin have spottier coverage but if it's strong in the areas you'll spend the most time, it doesn't mean you should rule it out if money is an issue. Net 10 also has its advantages since they own spectrum on both GSM and CDMA. This means they can take advantage of both networks which gives them pretty good coverage nationwide as well. Considering the price points they offer, it's worth a hard look if they have options available in your area. If you're looking to get the most bang for your buck with the best coverage, we'd recommend Straight Talk. Not only are their plans reasonable, there are international options to be had as well. And since you can take advantage of the AT&T network, traveling within the United States with a Straight Talk phone shouldn't be an issue. If you use your iPhone with prepaid, what carrier do you use and which ones would you recommend? |

WWDC Keynote confirmed for Monday, June 10 -- bring on iOS 7 and OS X 10.9! Posted: 23 May 2013 10:02 AM PDT While everyone's pretty much taken for granted that a Monday, June 10 WWDC 2013 kickoff would be a Monday, June 10, 10am (pacific) WWDC Keynote, it's still nice to see it confirmed. John Paczkowski of AllThingsD:
No word on the headliners, but if Apple holds to pattern, Tim Cook will lead the charge, and bring out Phil Schiller, Craig Federighi, and Eddy Cue for hardware, software, and services, respectively. This year, that could include new Haswell MacBooks, iOS 7 and OS X 10.9, and perhaps even a newer, better iCloud. The only wild card this year is whether or not Jony Ive takes the stage to show off his newer, flatter, Apple aesthetic? Source: AllThingsD |
Evernote updates brings reminders to the iPhone, iPad, and Mac Posted: 23 May 2013 09:49 AM PDT Evernote for iPhone, iPad, and Mac have all been updated today, adding a feature long requested by many users: reminders. Users can now click or tap the small alarm clock icon to add a reminder to any of their notes, which will pin those notes to the top of their note list in a new Reminders section, which can be manually reordered. Due dates can be added to reminders, and users can choose whether they want to receive notifications from the app itself, via email, or both. Mark the note as done by hitting the checkmark on the left when you are finished. Reminders work with Evernote's shared notebooks as well. There were some other, non-reminder related features added to both the Mac and iOS versions of Evernote. Both versions now boast enhanced security with XAuth, and allow users to view any application that has access to their account from Evernote Web. Additionally, Evernote for Mac has a redesigned vertical list that shows more notes, two new text styles, and the ability to edit saved searches. Both updates are available now.

Moshi introduces the new Codex case for the Retina MacBook Pro and MacBook Air Posted: 23 May 2013 09:29 AM PDT Popular accessory maker Moshi is back, with a pair of new protective cases for the Retina MacBook Pro and the MacBook Air. The cases are the second generation in Moshi's Codex line of MacBook cases and will be available for both sizes of MacBook Air, and both sizes of Retina MacBook Pro. The Codex cases are tailored to fit the MacBook, with the interiors insulated with memory foam, and the exteriors taking on a brushed metal appearance while being water resistant. The new versions come with a new new binding for added durability, and a curved design to maintain the lowest profile possible. When opened up, all ports on whichever MacBook you own are full available, so there's no need to remove it from the case to use it. Something like this would be handy to have while travelling, and the new Codex cases are fully TSA approved so the laptop doesn't need to come out of the case when going through airport security. The Codex will be available in Steel Black and Brushed Aluminum finishes for the two 13-inch MacBooks, and in Steel Black for the 11-inch Air and 15-inch Retina. Prices start at $70 for the 11-inch, to $75 for the 13-inch and $80 for the largest 15-inch case. No availability information is available at this time, but let us know what you think. Travellers in particular, does something like the new Codex appeal to you to look after your MacBook on your travels? |
Posted: 23 May 2013 08:56 AM PDT Dictation is a fantastic, Siri-like service on iPhone and iPad that, at the tap of a mic button, transforms what you say out loud into text on the screen. But sometimes that mic button ghosts over, grays out, and otherwise becomes un-tabble. That kills the natural-language interface, makes apps less accessible, and can otherwise stop your productivity dead. It rarely happens with built-in apps like Messages (though it does sometimes), but it's happening quite often with third party apps, especially Twitter clients. It, of course, should never, not ever happen. iOS should do everything it needs to to keep that button live. But it seems, based on my own tests and talking to a few developers, that when memory gets low, iOS turns off Dictation. Sigh. However, since memory does seem to be the issue, there's an easy if annoying fix: Kill all apps in the fast app switcher to free up memory. It's a waste of time but it has its uses and this is one of them. As soon as whatever's sitting in the background -- doing what it shouldn't be doing, eating up all the memory it should't be eating -- is defenestrated from the system, the Dictation button will de-gray and come roaring back to life. Hopefully Apple fixes this in iOS 7, and the Dictation button just works and keeps on working. Meanwhile, anyone found a better way to fix this? |

Mailbox for iPad available now! Posted: 23 May 2013 06:17 AM PDT We knew it was coming, but now Mailbox for iPad is here! Released today into the App Store, Mailbox for iPad provides the same great email experience as the iPhone version but optimized for the larger screen. The iPad version comes by way of an update to the main app. We've only been playing around with it for a short time, but first impressions are good. All the same great mail management features translate nicely to the larger screen, and swiping feels even more natural on the iPad. The added screen real estate gives you a 2-pane view, so you can scroll through your inbox while reading a message. Also included in the update is a bunch of bug fixes, without saying which bugs they're fixing. It is also still Gmail only for the time being folks. The download is live in the App Store now, so go get it! Then come back and tell us how you like it.

New Apple Store in Adelaide, Australia looking fantastic ahead of the grand opening! Posted: 23 May 2013 05:21 AM PDT Excitement is building in Adelaide, Australia ahead of this Saturday's opening of their first Apple Store, and judging by these photos the store is looking fantastic! iMore forums member mglivesey kindly sent us some photographs of the completed store as he eagerly awaits the big day. The interior is as we've come to know and love from an Apple Store; rows of tables adorned with the products, very clean, minimal styling. And, as mglivesey points out, that is a guard that's been hired to keep watch, and he had to snap the photos quickly while he wasn't looking! The first 1000 people through the doors after the 10am opening are set to get the now traditional commemorative t-shirts. So, to all our Australian friends, will you be joining mglivesey at the grand opening of the Adelaide Apple Store this Saturday? Shout out in the comments, and enjoy the rest of the photos while you're waiting! And if you grab any shots of the grand opening, be sure to share them with us too! Thanks mglivesey for the photos! |
