Tim Cook to give deposition in ebook pricing lawsuit Posted: 14 Mar 2013 07:28 PM PDT A federal judge has ordered Tim Cook to give a deposition as part of the US Justice Department's lawsuit over ebook pricing. The government has been limited to deposing Cook for four hours. Executives from the companies involved in the suit have already testified, with Cook being the sole exception. Prior to the order, Apple's lawyers had tried to argue that deposing Cook could be harmful to Apple's business.
Senior Vice President of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue was deposed on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. During the deposition, Cue apparently said that Cook had knowledge regarding Apple's ebook pricing strategy. Apple and the major publishers settled a similar case with European Union regulators towards the end of last year. Source: Bloomberg |
How to export and transfer your Google Reader feeds to another RSS service on iPhone and iPad Posted: 14 Mar 2013 02:44 PM PDT Google surprised all of us yesterday with the news that Google Reader is getting canned this summer. That means if you use Google Reader for your RSS news feeds, you'll need to export your feeds to a new service before the service shuts down. Luckily, if you've got an iPhone or iPad, the task should be pretty easy. Here's a few options for transferring your RSS feeds to a new service.
How to export your RSS feeds from Google Reader
How to import your RSS feeds from Google ReaderAll RSS apps are a bit different on the desktop but the general is that somewhere in settings or in a menu, you should have an import button.
How to import your Google Reader feeds to Flipboard for iPhone and iPadFlipboard is one of the most popular RSS apps for both iPhone and iPad. It not only has a beautiful interface, but has Google Reader support built right in. This means once you import your Google Reader feeds, you're done. Best of all Flipboard is free.
Other RSS app suggestionsThere are lots of RSS feed apps available in the App Store. Whether you just want to make a clean break and import your feeds over again or want to find a desktop client with a mobile client attached, here are some iOS and Mac RSS apps that aren't dependent upon Google Reader.
These are just a few of our recommendations but there are, of course, tons more in both the iOS App Store and Mac App Store. Let us know your suggestions in the comments! |

Elixr is a social network that helps you find a drink Posted: 14 Mar 2013 01:04 PM PDT Elixr is a new app and social network for the iPhone that helps you find a good place for a drink. Elixr lets you share your potent potable discoveries with your wider social sphere through pictures and ratings. After signing up, you can import friends into Elixr by either connecting to Facebook or allowing access to your iPhone's contacts. Elixr lets you rate the different drinks available at a particular venue. Each drink's rating contributes to the establishment's overall rating. Other Elixr members will then be able to inspect the list to see what to get when they visit the venue. Elixr will use your location to find nearby bars. If your looking for somewhere new, just open the map to venues rated by fellow Elixr users. Finally, Elixr allows you to share your posts with friends not only on Elixr itself, but also on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Foursquare, and Instagram. For those who love to share and talk about what they're drinking, Elixr allows you to connect with others who share that passion. It's available now for free on the App Store, so be sure to give it a try.

Healthy Desserts by Green Kitchen for iPhone and iPad review Posted: 14 Mar 2013 11:24 AM PDT Healthy Desserts by Green Kitchen is an iPhone and iPad app that features 48 desserts that use only natural sweeteners, healthy fats, and whole grains and fruits. The app is gorgeously designed and features mouthwatering photography that will make you dying to get in the kitchen to whip one of these up. All of the recipes are displayed as photography in a grid. Tapping on one will bring up a gorgeous, full-screen, retina photograph and access to info about the item, the ingredients, and a step-by-step recipe. The summary gives a description of the recipe, how long it will take, the number of portions, and mark whether it's raw, gluten free, began, whole grain, or uses natural sweeteners. In the ingredients lists, ingredient names are highlighted and when you tap them, a dictionary will appear with its definition. Healthy Desserts is a universal app for iPhone and iPad and takes advantage of iCloud sync by keeping your favorites synced up between devices. The good
The bad
The bottom lineHealthy Desserts is a gorgeous cookbook filled with not-so-bad-for-you dessert choices. The mouthwatering photos do a great job of convincing you that these healthier options are still a delicious choice over something worse for you.

YouTube Capture updates with support for iPad Posted: 14 Mar 2013 11:15 AM PDT YouTube Capture has been updated to add support for the iPad. Now universal, YouTube Capture allows you to take videos and directly upload them to YouTube. Just like the iPhone version, YouTube Capture on the iPad is capable of uploading videos at 1080p. While this won't have as much utility as the iPhone version, it's good that Google is trying to accommodate multiple use cases. Hopefully, Google Maps will be the next Google app to get the iPad treatment. Do you take video with your iPad? Is the arrival of YouTube Capture for iPad good news? Let us know!

Samsung gets ready to counter-program the iPhone with the Galaxy S4 Posted: 14 Mar 2013 10:17 AM PDT I'm in New York with our Windows Phone editor, Daniel Rubino and our videographer, Martin Reisch, to help Android Central's Phil Nickinson cover the ever-loving stuffing out of the Samsung Galaxy S4 event at Radio City Music Hall tonight. (Yeah, all of us can work cross-platform, go figure?) What we're expecting is a bigger, badder-asser Galaxy S phone. So much has leaked already that there may not be too many surprises. The screen will likely be bigger (somewhere between the Galaxy S3 and the Note II?), processor will likely be more advanced (big.LITTLE dual quadcore), and Samsung will do what they do best -- throw a dizzying array of software features at us to see what sticks. Rumors range from eye-tracking to make sure we're paying attention to videos, to hover-mode for the touch sensor so you can gesture above, not just on the display, for even more options. What's real and what's wishful blogging, we won't know until tonight. I'll be in Times Square with Martin if you're there and want to say hi, and get your picture in the Android Central feed. Otherwise we'll tweet what we can -- @reneritchie and @safesolvent -- but if you're at all interested in Apple's biggest competition to date, keep it locked on Android Central and the Samsung Galaxy S3 The iPhone 5 is almost 6 months old. The iPhone 5S is still months away. Samsung's picked the perfect time to counter-program Apple. It's their turn in the spotlight. While we wait on the next iPhone, let's see what Samsung can do. |
BlackBerry Secure Work Space coming to iOS and Android Posted: 14 Mar 2013 09:48 AM PDT Blackberry recently previewed a service called Secure Work Space which aims to bring a BlackBerry Balance like feature to iOS and Android. Basically, you'll have secure applications for productivity apps such as email, calendar, and tasks. Employees that are part of a BYOD initiative would be able to have separate personal and business apps on one device if using Secure Work Space. According to CrackBerry, the service will be managed through BlackBerry Enterprise Services 10. BlackBerry has long been praised for their security features and bringing it to 3rd party devices makes it easy for IT companies who are already familiar with BES to implement it on almost any device an employee may have even if it isn't an actual BlackBerry device. CBS Launches Free Full Episodes Streaming App, But No Full Episodes for Big Bang Theory Posted: 14 Mar 2013 09:00 AM PDT CBS is a new free iPad app from the TV network of the same name, which offers full episodes streaming of many of the network's most popular shows. These include Criminal Minds, NCIS, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, How I Met Your Mother, Survivor, Elementary, and more. But .. full episodes of The Big Bang Theory are not available – instead there are just a series of 1 to 2 minute clips available for what many of us would say is easily the best show on CBS. This seems an odd decision, to put it mildly. Yet another example of TV networks just not 'getting it' when it comes to access to their content I guess. Here's a bit of the App Store intro for the new CBS app:

CBS launches app for streaming full episodes of shows Posted: 14 Mar 2013 08:54 AM PDT CBS has launched a new app for iOS that streams full episodes of several primetime, daytime, and late night shows. Programs such as NCIS, The Big Bang Theory, and The Late Show with David Letterman are all available. CBS says that episodes of daytime and late night shows will be available within 24 hours of their initial airing, while primetime episodes will be available after eight days. The CBS app also has "second-screen" experiences for select shows. CBS is the last of the major US broadcast networks to offer its own streaming app. NBC and ABC have each had an app for years, and FOX launched theirs last fall. CBS has historically been slow to embrace the internet, but this offering is a step in the right direction. While the eight-day delay is less than ideal, CBS is finally providing users with content on a more flexible viewing options than in the past. The CBS app is available for free right now on the App Store as a universal app for both iPhone and iPad.
