Facebook rumored to be launching a ‘Find My Friends’ type app next month

Posted: 05 Feb 2013 12:58 AM PST

Facebook rumored to be launching a 'Find My Friends' type app next monthFacebook is rumored to be releasing an app that will help you keep an eye on where your Facebook friends are at any given time. The app which is being compared to Apple's "Find My Friends" is said to be able to run in the background and can automatically update with a user's location so friends can easily find them. The news comes from Bloomberg who had been speaking with two anonymous people with knowledge of the matter.

The app, scheduled for release by mid-March, is designed to help users find nearby friends and would run even when the program isn't open on a handset, said one of the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans aren't public.

The team developing Facebook's location software is being led by Peter Deng, a product director who joined from Google in 2007, one person said. The group also includes engineers from Glancee, a location-tracking startup Facebook acquired in May, and Gowalla, a location-based social network whose assets were purchased in December 2011, the person said.

It is thought that the new app will help Facebook to sell more ads based on a user's location and daily routines. While it is not uncommon for current Facebook users to check in and tell the world where they are at any chosen time, the thought of the app automatically updating that information for you and reporting your whereabouts to your friends at all times is something quite different. Of course if true, this will be an optional service and will only be activated if you choose to do so.

Would you be happy to allow Facebook to know where you are at all times?

Taking the Vader-black iPhone to full-on Blackout!

Posted: 04 Feb 2013 08:30 PM PST

The Vader black iPhone goes Blackout

When Apple first showed off the new, unibody slate and black iPhone 5, I referred to it as Vader black. I liked the look so much, I escalated it by going retro-black with my Lock screen and Home screen wallpapers. Then, when AnoStyle was announced, I immediately wanted to take it one step further. I wanted the Blackout look you see on high-end watches and cars. Problem was, AnoStyle didn't offer black anodization. Not yet, at least...

So I bugged Ally and her Ano-Ninja accomplice, Rob, and volunteered to be test subject zero for their first-ever Blackout iPhone 5. They agreed, I bought a new phone for them to try it out on, and as you can see from the results above and below, they did not fail to delight.

If you turn it into the sun or bright light, it looks like a normal black and slate iPhone 5, only several shades deeper and darker. If you turn it away from the sun, it's matte black as the emptiness of space. It's so black, only the slight difference in refraction of the Apple logo and iPhone lettering can be seen, darker or brighter, shadowed or gleaming across its back.

If you hold the the blacker-than-Vader black iPhone next to a regular black and slate iPhone 5, the difference is immediately apparent. Above is a shot I took with a 5D Mark III and f/1.4 lens under Hue LED lighting. However, in normal use it's understated and subtle and almost no one will notice anything different about it all alone and at a glance. I love that, and more than one friend I showed it off to at Macworld|iWorld could only smile and mumble "damn" as well. Others may prefer being loud and colorful and shiny in red or blue or gold. I wanted something simple and pure and authentic and utterly capable of getting lost any and every time I leave it on a dark surface.

I wanted stealth. And that's what I got.

Blue Microphone Nessie at Macworld|iWorld 2013

Posted: 04 Feb 2013 05:42 PM PST

Blue makes legendary mics. That's according to Hillary Money, who spoke to us at Macworld|iWorld 2013. Their Yeti are frequently used by podcasters amateur and professional alike, and due to both those markets, Blue is amping things up yet again with the Nessie. Take everything you like about the Yeti, give is a sexy, serpentine new body, and add a ton of automagic-ness, and that's what you get.

If you're new to microphones, the Nessie will do all the heavy-lifting for you. It's got a built-in shock mount to prevent rumbling trucks, appliances, or machines from introducing noise, and a built-in pop-filter to cancel out p-p-puffs of expiration. Nessie also automatically applies audio processing that's smart enough to adjust to what you're trying to record, giving your audio the same treatment auto-focus, auto-exposure video's been enjoying for years.

There's also a raw audio option for pros, who know what they're putting in, and want complete control over what they're getting out. Combine that with a zero-latency headphone out for direct monitoring, volume, and an easy to get to mute button, and you have all the power of a supercar, with all the amenities of a luxury ride.

It even has an articulated "neck" so you can position it just where you like it.

It'll work with your iPad via USB to Lightning or USB to 30-pin Dock connector, or with your Mac or Windows PC.

And it should be available sometime in the next few months.

How to jailbreak your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch on iOS 6.0 or 6.1 with evasi0n

How to jailbreak your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch on iOS 6.0 or 6.1 with evasi0n

It's that time of year again, jailbreak time! The new evasi0n jailbreak is compatible with any device running iOS 6 or higher, including the just released iOS 6.1. Yep, even the iPhone 5 and iPad mini are supported and completely untethered.

If you aren't sure how to jailbreak using evasi0n, follow along and we'll guide you through!

Before starting, you'll need to download the evasi0n jailbreak software to your Mac, PC, or Linux desktop. Make sure you save it somewhere that you can easily access it.

Once you've downloaded evasi0n from the site, you can proceed on...

  1. Mac users will need to right click and then click open if you're running OS X Mountain Lion to bypass the built-in software security.
  2. Next Mac users will see another popup asking if they'd like to confirm they'd like to open the software from an unknown developer. Simply click on Open.
  3. evasi0n will now ask you to plug in your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch if you haven't already.
  4. It will now recognize your device. Now click on the Jailbreak button.
  5. Let evasi0n do it's thing. It'll then ask you to unlock your device and tap on the Jailbreak icon. Make sure you only do this one time. You'll find it somewhere on your Home screen.
  6. Give evasi0n a few more seconds and you're jailbreak should now be complete. Just click on the Exit button or close out evasi0n on your computer.

Remember, after a large release jailbreak like this, you may experience issues with Cydia running slow. This is very typical of a new jailbreak since the servers get hit hard. If you can't update Cydia or access everything right away, it'll pass as soon as the initial rush is over, which will leave you to enjoy your jailbreak once again!

Skype for iPad

Skype for iPad, the iPad app for the hugely popular VOIP service, has been updated today, to Version 4.5. Here's the change list for this latest update:

✓ Skype automatically reconnects a dropped call when your wifi or mobile network reception is poor
✓ Add money to your Skype account directly from the app to send SMS or call mobiles and landlines worldwide. Currently available in United States, United Kingdom, France, Sweden and Estonia.
✓ A simple swipe from the left of the screen opens your recent conversations in a new sidebar
✓ General fixes
One-to-one chats now appear in the correct order

Those first three new features all sound very good to me. Dropped calls are a relatively common event on Skype so automatic reconnects should hopefully help make them less painful. Being able to add money to a Skype account is handy too – as you always tend to see your...

Mobile Nations fitness month week 1: Exercise!

Posted: 04 Feb 2013 08:51 AM PST

It's February and you know what that means? Mobile Nations Fitness Month! That's when we all get together to get in shape, share tips and tricks and recipes for success, review amazing apps and accessories, give away great prizes, and have a ton of fun! This year we're doing it a little differently, though. We're doing weekly themes, and that means every week you'll have new and exciting challenges, and new chances to win!

Week 1: Exercise!

We want to get in shape and feel great! Exercise helps us in so many ways. It helps us lose weight, reduce stress, feel energized, and improve our self-image. Getting moving reduces the likelihood of diseases, and keeps us healthy and as we get older.

As part of fitness month, we'll be reviewing a bunch of great apps and accessories that can help motivate, track, and train us to exercise better and smarter. We'll also be doing a couple of cool contests.

Stepping up contest

First is our Mobile Nations Stepping Up contest. Every day this week there'll be a thread in the iMore health and fitness forums, and all you have to do to enter is tell us what exercise or activity you did that day. It can be walking or running, playing soccer or doing yoga, swimming or dancing -- anything that makes you move. If you have a Fitbit, Nike Fuelband, JAWBONE UP, or any gadget with a pedometer, you can simply share your results each day.

This is a great way to keep us all motivated and accountable, and get a little healthy peer-pressure going! Plus, every day you enter is a chance to win a $20 gift certificate!

Exercise MY way contest

Second is our Exercise MY Way contest. Just head on over to the Exercise MY Way thread in the forums and tell us how you use your mobile device, your iPhone or iPad, to stay in shape. What are your favorite apps? What are your go to accessories for keeping fit? How does your device fit your active lifestyle? We want to know! We'll post the best entries on Friday, so get them in ASAP! Need more incentive? We'll pick one winner a week and send them a $100 gift certificate!

So what are you waiting for? Mobile Nations Fitness Month starts NOW!

Three UK to offer LTE as standard when available later this year, no premium price plan needed

    Posted: 04 Feb 2013 02:12 AM PST

Three UK to offer LTE as standard when available later this year, no premium price plan neededUK network Three has announced that it will offer LTE on its network later this year and unlike other operators, there will be no premium for the service. Three UK announced that it plans to roll out LTE later this year on its 1800MHz spectrum which it acquired as part of the deal which gave EE (Everything Everywhere) a head start in the launch of LTE in the UK. Because EE has an exclusive, its deals are less than favourable to consumers with small data allowances at a premium price.

LTE, otherwise known as 4G, will be added to Three's Ultrafast network later this year. Unlike some other UK mobile operators, it will be available across all existing and new price plans without customers needing to pay a premium fee to 'upgrade'.

"Our customers choose Three because they love the internet and know they can get great speeds and great value on our award-winning network," said Three UK chief executive Dave Dyson. "As we add the next wave of technology to our Ultrafast network, we've listened to our customers and thought long and hard about the right way to do it. We don't want to limit Ultrafast services to a select few based on a premium price and we've decided our customers will get this service as standard.

So if you are planning on switching to EE to get some of that LTE action, you may want to think again. Three will offer true unlimited access to its LTE services at prices that are way more competitive too. The only downside is when Three will be in a position to turn on LTE. The only information they're giving out is sometime this year; let's hope it is sooner rather than later. I personally can't wait, I have been a Three subscriber for a couple of years now and find their unlimited data offers excellent value for money and have no complaints on service either.
