Sundance Film Festival to debut Ashton Kutcher’s portrayal of Steve Jobs

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 10:47 PM PST

Sundance Film Festival to debut Ashton Kutcher's portrayal of Steve JobsThe Sundance Film Festival will be the venue for the first ever screening of the movie "jOBS which sees Ashton Kutcher in the role of Steve Jobs. The film has been included in the line-up and will be screened in January 2013 according to The Verge

This coming January is likely to be the first time that anyone outside of a production facility will get a look at jOBS, the new biopic of Steve Jobs starring Ashton Kutcher. The movie, which was initially announced in April of this year, covers 30 years of Jobs' life from 1971 to 2000 as an entrepreneur and leader of such companies as Apple, NeXT, and Pixar. It also stars Dermot Mulroney, Josh Gad, Lukas Haas, J.K. Simmons, and Matthew Modine.

jOBS is set to be screened on January 27, 2013, the closing night of the Sundance festival. It is not yet clear when it will be released to regular theaters for those that can't attend the movie festival.

The jOBS film is not to be confused with the Sony film which is based on the recent best-selling book Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson; this is an entirely independent venture. The screening of the jOBS film was originally slated for a late fall 2012 release so it looks like it has slipped a little behind schedule. Not too much longer to wait especially if you are planning on attending the Sundance Film Festival. The 2013 Sundance Film Festival takes place between January 17-27 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah.

iTunes music goes live in 56 new countries, movies in 4 new countries

iTunes music goes live in 56 new countries, movies in 4 new countries

Apple has just expanded their already formidable lead when it comes to international, online content from the iTunes Store. In total, 56 new countries now have access to iTunes music, including several in Eastern Europe and a plethora in Africa, the Middle East, Asia Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean. New iTunes movies countries include India, Indonesia, Russia, and Turkey. Eric Slivka from MacRumors has compiled a list.

MacStories previously reported that Apple offered music in 62 countries compared to Microsoft's 8, Google's 1, and Amazon's 7. With today's additions, that brings Apple to a staggering 118 countries for iTunes music.

For movies, Apple had 62 to Microsoft's 20, Google's 8, and Amazon's 2. Apple now has 66.

Compared to Apple's growth, it's not that the competition looks like they're standing still. It looks like they're in rewind.

Curious number of new iMacs born in the USA

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 05:11 PM PST

Apple shifting more manufacturing to the US, starting with new iMacs

For some time now there have been Apple products that bore "Assembled in USA" labelling, specifically built-to-order custom-configured Macs. But standard configurations of MacBooks and iMacs universally came over from China. As noted by Fortune, some of Apple's new super-slim 21.5-inch iMacs are coming with "Assembled in USA" labels, in standard configurations available off-the-shelf at Apple's retail stores. Now, not all of the new iMacs bear USA labeling, there are a lot that also come with the China labels still. But enough to be curious.

Back in May of this year, Apple CEO Tim Cook was the opening interview for D10, offering a wide-ranging discussion about the past, present, and future of Apple. At that time, All Things D's Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg pressed Cook on a touchy subject for any multinational manufacturer of anything: why build in China instead of in the US? Cook offered a safe answer, explaining that he wants Apple products to be built in the US of A, but that the flexibility and speed of the Chinese industrial complex and availability of skilled workers in China make building iPhones and the like hard to justify manufacturing in the US. But, said Cook, Apple does purchase several components from US manufacturers; the ARM-core chips used in iOS devices are built in Texas and Gorilla Glass for the mobile screens is manufactured in Kentucky by Corning. Alas, the boxes kept coming, noting "Designed in California. Assembled in China."

That "Assembled in China" line is a standard note on many devices (with the exception of a few companys, such as Sony who tends to build in Japan, or Samsung who puts things together in South Korea), though for some time now there have been Apple products that bore "Assembled in USA", specifically built-to-order custom-configured Macs.

Why exactly these standard entry-level iMacs are coming from US assembly plants instead of China isn't clear. As 9to5Mac points out, the regulations surrounding "Assembled in the USA" are quite specific, requiring more than just a screwdriver to make it so. It could be Apple actually moving more manufacturing to the United States, or it could be a case of difficulties in the new iMac's complex production necessitating that the US-based custom-order plants pick up some of the slack in order to meet expected demand at launch time. Maybe it's a combination of both.

There's still a lot that would need to happen for Apple or any other purveyor of electronic gadgets to be able to move an entire manufacturing line for mass market products like iMacs or iPads or iPhones to the United States, but you've got to start somewhere.

Create a time capsule of your life with little memory for iPhone

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 02:52 PM PST

little memory is a an app that helps you remember the little things in your life by showing you what happened in your life exactly one year, month, or week ago. Every day, you simply make a small entry of what you'd like to remember and once you have enough entries, little memory will show you past memories. It's easy to remember big things, but little memory will help you remember small things like that trip you took to the park with your baby when she thought woods chips were simply amazing.

To help you remember to make a daily entry, little memory will send you a notification at a specific time every day. For many people, you'll probably want to choose a time at the end of the day when the kids are in bed and you're winding down before bed, as this is when you'll be most likely to actually make an entry. The beauty of little memory is that it actually restricts you to short entries (max of 210 characters) so keeping up with your journaling doesn't feel like a chore.

In addition to text, little memory also allows you to attach one photo to each entry, adding a visual element to your memories. What's great about this is that if you can't think of what you'd like to add for the day, you can simply browse through the photos you took that day since you only take photos of things you think are interesting. Then you can add a sentence or two about why you took the photo. Unfortunately, little memory only includes 7 photo credits and you must purchase a subscription to get an unlimited number of them. You are able to view your memories on the web, so I assume that's why they don't allow unlimited photos to begin with.

If you like, you can share you memories with your friends over email, messages, Facebook, or Twitter. I definitely see myself sharing past memories about my kids with my husband so that we can think back to those special moments together.

In addition to seeing old memories, little memory will also give you insights about your entires that looks for patterns like commonly used words and emotions so that you can see a snapshot of what you write about most and how you're feeling. These insights go back 3 months, but if you signup for the previously mentioned subscription, you can go back to when you first started using little memory.

A subscription to a premium little memory account is $3.99 per month, $22.99 per 6 months, or $42.00 per year. Don't let these prices scare you off, though, as little memory is very usable without a subscription plan. I wouldn't even consider signing up until I had been using the app for at least 3 months.

The good

  • see what happened in your life a year/month/week ago
  • daily reminders, so you don't miss a day
  • attach a photo to a memory
  • be inspired by your own words with a morning notification
  • all your memories are private and personal (requires password)
  • see the length of your longest streak of memories
  • see insights of words used and emotions graphed over time
  • invite your friends via email, messaging, facebook, or twitter
  • get an archive of all your memories for your own backup/safe keeping
  • easily share your memories over email, messaging, facebook, or twitter

The bad

  • Only includes 7 "photo credits". To get more, you must purchase subscription
  • Can't choose how photos get cropped

The conclusion

I just picked up little memory, today, but I look forward to using it on a daily basis. I love to blog and journal, but it's often times a bit of a chore to actually do because I feel obligated to put in at least a little bit of effort. With little memory, all I need to do is enter a sentence or two about something I want to remember about my day (good or bad) and I'm done! I have a habit of spending a few minutes on my iPhone while laying in bed every night, so this is when I plan to make my entries. I can't wait until I start seeing past memories.

Some Thoughts on the Demise of The Daily, the First iPad-only Newspaper

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 01:33 PM PST

The Daily

Well, the grand experiment of the first iPad only newspaper is soon coming to an end. The Daily, published by Rupert Murdoch's NewsCorp, will be publishing a final farewell issue on December 15 – around two months shy of two years from its launch in the iPad App Store.

The Daily has over 100,000 subscribers but appears to have fallen a long way short of its owners' financial targets – and probably far short of breaking even. Little surprise there though with the early reports that $30 million was spent on it before it even hit the App Store and of a staff of over 100 for the title.

Here's a few excerpt chunks from the press release from The Daily:

Two years ago, we set out to create a revolutionary product that people would love.  The Daily delivered great original reporting, excellent design, and custom interactivity to users every day.  Although we have over 100,000 passionate paying subscribers, unfortunately we have not been able to build a big enough audience fast enough to make our business model work. …

Our iPad app will cease publishing on Dec. 15 with a farewell issue.  The Daily has a strong social media presence and a large, engaged community of fans and we intend to continue to engage our social following with our unique take on the news.

The Daily innovated every day. We broke some great stories. We made a publication that a lot of people love. We should be proud of what we achieved.

I was fascinated with the idea of The Daily the first time I heard about it – but found it disappointing right from the off.

Travel back in Christmas time with Holiday Time Machine for iPhone

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 12:05 PM PST

Holiday Time Machine is fun little app that includes over 2,500 Holiday videos from 1898 to 2012. That's over a century of history! You get to browse by year and choose from 1-60 different videos for each year. The types of videos include famous scenes from television shows, commercials, trailers, and even sometimes entire motion pictures (for the older videos). For example, in 1990, you can watch a 2 minute trailer for Home Alone and in 1992, Mariah Carey's performance of "All I Want For Christmas Is You" is available.

Holiday Time Machine is a universal app for iPhone and iPad and supports Airplay so that you can easily share to your AppleTV or other Airplay supported device. Want to bring your friends with you on your blast to the past? Share your favorite videos to Facebook and Twitter so that they join in on the nostalgia with you.

There's also one video that we are all familiar with that can be accessed quickly at any time -- the Virtual Yule Log! Just tap the tree icon in the upper lefthand corner of the screen to get to it.

What I love about Holiday Time Machine is the memories that some of these videos remind me of that are completely unrelated to the videos themselves except for the fact that my brain associates them with the same year that something else significant happened. Holiday Time Machine is also helping me create a list of movies I want to watch this season due to all the trailers. Unfortunately, there isn't a way to mark videos as favorites, so I have to keep track of this list elsewhere.

If you pick this one up, let us know what you think!

How To Manage Newspaper & Magazine Subscriptions in iOS 6 on the iPad

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 08:28 AM PST

Newsstand

The Newsstand section of the iPad App Store now has a good range of leading newspapers and magazines for the iPad, an these iPad editions offer subscription plans. Generally, just as with print publications, subscriptions offer savings as compared to buying individual issues.

When you sign-up for an iPad newspaper or magazine subscription it is set to auto-renew unless you manually change it. It's easy to keep track of your subscriptions, modify them, or cancel them right on the iPad itself. Before iOS 6 there were a couple of ways to do this – now under iOS 6 there's just one way. Here's how you manage your subscriptions:

– Open the App Store app on your iPad and tap on the Featured button in the bottom nav bar

– Scroll down to the bottom of the Featured page – below the Quick Links section – and tap on the button that says 'Apple ID' and your username

– That will bring up a popup dialog – tap the top choice on there that say 'View Apple ID'. Then sign in with your Apple ID password when prompted.

Chris’s gift picks: 2012 holiday guide

Posted: 03 Dec 2012 07:37 AM PST

Chris's gift picks: 2012 holiday guideThis season we're asking everyone here at iMore to share some of their favorite gift ideas. Sure, there'll be iPhone, iPad, and Mac apps and accessories included on everyones' lists, just as you'd expect, but there'll also be other stuff, great, geeky, gorgeous other stuff that's as multi-facted and fun as the people themselves. It's my turn and I've found a couple must-haves for the gadget fanatics you'll be shopping for this year.

iPad 2

iPad 2 I didn't upgrade my trusty iPad 2 to the new iPad or the iPad 4th generation and I am still glad I didn't. The iPad 2 does everything I need it to do in a lighter form factor and it has saved me a fortune too. I would still recommend (and have for that matter) the iPad 2 to people who don't really care about a razor sharp screen or have any need for it either.

For me, it is the best iPad made so far, lighter and cheaper than the newer models out there now. I have had it for nearly two years now and it still makes me smile every time I use it. If you don't want to pay the extra for the Retina display, don't be put off by the iPad 2. It is still the best tablet out there in my opinion and should not be dismissed as yesterday's technology. The fact that it can be easily jailbroken and used as an XBMC client is the icing on the cake!

Soundwave SW50 Bluetooth Speaker (UK)

Soundwave SW50 Bluetooth Speaker I have been on the lookout for a reasonable priced good quality Bluetooth speaker that I can use in my bathroom and bedroom. Sure the Jambox is a lovely solution but the price is just a bit too tasty for me. Instead I decided to go for the Soundwave SW50 Bluetooth speaker and I am really glad I did.

I ordered it from Amazon here in the UK and it cost in total with free shipping, just £20 or $32 and to say I am impressed is an understatement. Once I paired it with my iPhone 5 (which was very straight forward) I started to play some music through it and the quality was excellent. The most impressive part is the bass reproduction for a speaker that fits in the palm of your hand; it is really loud, more than good enough to fill a reasonably sized room. It even comes with a rechargeable battery which uses micro-USB to charge it and it can even be used as a Bluetooth speaker-phone.

The Soundwave SW50 is a real bargain and is now sitting in my bathroom. It is compatible with any phone, mp3 player, tablet or laptop that supports the Bluetooth A2DP profile. It's available from Amazon in the UK.

If you're not in the UK, check out the Jambox.

TuneLink Auto

TuneLink Auto This accessory was an absolute must after I upgraded my iPhone 4S to the iPhone 5. I listen to music and podcasts all of the time when I am driving around and my iPhone 4S had a kit that allowed the audio from the dock connector to be piped straight into my car stereo. Due to Apple' change in dock connector from the 30 pin to the Lightning connector, I could no longer use this when I switched to the iPhone 5; this is where the TuneLink Auto comes in.

The TuneLink Auto is a Bluetooth stereo audio interface that plugs into your car's 12-volt power socket and then into your cars AUX 3.5mm input. Your iPhone can then connect to the TuneLink via Bluetooth and it plays your music through your stereo all without wires. It also comes with a USB port so you can plug in your Lightning cable and charge your iPhone 5 if needed. The sound quality is fantastic and as soon as you start your car the iPhone pairs to the TuneLink and your music or Podcasts start playing without any interaction needed. It works perfectly every time.

If your car doesn't have an AUX input, fear not, the TuneLink also has an inbuilt FM transmitter included too so you can tune it to a free radio station and listen to your music that way; the sound quality using the FM transmitter is nowhere near as good as with the wired solution. The TuneLink is a top piece of technology and I love it!

If you want something that can be used both in the car and around the house, check out the BlackBerry Music Gateway:

Tweetbot

Tweetbot If you love know someone who just getting started using Twitter, then you must give them Tweetbot. It is quite simply the most elegant and functional Twitter client for iPhone. It has been designed from the ground up to take advantage of the buttery smooth animations found when developing for the iOS platform. Not only does this app look the best it performs the best and has the best features too.

From multiple timelines to smart gestures, push notifications to mute filters, this app has them all and so much more.

Pocket Casts

Pocketcasts I love listening to podcasts, I subscribe to loads of them and need an app that helps me stay organized and tells me when new episodes are available. Thankfully I discovered Pocket Casts which fits into my life perfectly.

Pocket Casts has a fantastic clean user interface and features in abundance. It can download new episodes in the background; notify you when new episodes have been released and so much more. It is an excellent app and one I use on a daily basis. If you know someone who needs a good podcast app, gift them Pocket Casts.

The Daily going dark: News Corp stopping the digital presses on December 15

The Daily going dark: News Corp stopping the digital presses on December 15

The Daily, the flagship magazine launched at a special event on February 2, 2011, is closing down on December 15, 2012, just shy of its second birthday. A bold attempt at embracing tablet-centric publishing with the support of Rupert Murdoch and Apple, News Corps announced the shut down as part of a large overall restructuring that will involve their news division keeping the name News Corps, their entertainment division splitting off under the name Fox Group, and Jesse Angelo, who was editor-in-chief of the Daily, will become published of the New York post. Here's what Murdoch had to say in the News Corps press release:

As part of a digital restructuring initiative, the company will cease standalone publication of The Daily iPad app on December 15, 2012, though the brand will live on in other channels. Technology and other assets from The Daily, including some staff, will be folded into The Post.

"From its launch, The Daily was a bold experiment in digital publishing and an amazing vehicle for innovation. Unfortunately, our experience was that we could not find a large enough audience quickly enough to convince us the business model was sustainable in the long-term. Therefore we will take the very best of what we have learned at The Daily and apply it to all our properties. Under the editorial leadership of Editor-in-Chief Col Allan and the business and digital leadership of Jesse, I know The New York Post will continue to grow and become stronger on the web, on mobile, and not least, the paper itself. I want to thank all of the journalists, digital and business professionals for the hard work they put into The Daily."

News Corps also says some technology, staff, and other assets will get folded into the New York Post.

The Daily has been an interesting ride. Traditional publishers have been reticent to do digital-first publications in the past, and it was great to see News Corps try to blaze a trail into that new frontier. However, they did it in a very traditional way, and their analog strategies and business models never seemed to mesh with the realities of digital content gathering and distribution.

It doesn't feel like a great news magazine can't be made exclusively for tablets, it feels like News Corps realized their weren't making the right one, the right way.

Marco Arment's The Magazine does a great job re-inventing short-form articles for mobile in general, and Newsstand in specific. Perhaps it will likewise take a new person or organization to figure out news-gathering and reporting.

iTunes Store looks set for Russian launch, small event to be held in Moscow on December 4At long last, the iTunes Store looks like it will be officially launching in Russia. For a few weeks now, we have heard rumblings that it may be launching very soon, some users have already seen songs for sale in music searches at extremely competitive prices. Now Apple has supposedly sent out invitations to a small number of people to attend an event in Moscow tomorrow; the news comes from a report by TechCrunch

A tipster has forwarded us an email, in Russian, inviting a small group of people to an iTunes event in Moscow on the evening of December 4. The email does not give much away, simply noting that team iTunes will be holding a musical evening, and that it's a small, invitation-only affair, at one of the city's swanky shopping centers, GUM, located on Moscow's Red Square.

The email was sent out by one of Apple's PR people in the country, Irina Efremova. We have contacted Apple to ask about the event and will update this post as we learn more. People have been anticipating a launch of iTunes in Russia for some time now. It was originally planned for the October of this year, and then delayed to November, according to sources cited by the RIA Novosti Russian news agency from November 20. That report had also said the launch was now "delayed indefinitely."

The news that the iTunes Store will be launching in Russia will be welcome news, not only to the Russian public but to Apple too. Android phones dominate the market in Russia with iPhones having just 2% market share. If Apple could offer its iTunes music services, that would surely open the door to an increase in device sales as well as an increase in revenue from music sales.
