Clear for Mac now available in Mac App Store, Clear for iPhone updated with iCloud support Posted: 07 Nov 2012 10:10 PM PST Clear, the incredibly beautiful task list manager for iPhone that stole our hearts with its gesture-based approach, has been updated to support iCloud sync -- to work seamlessly with the newly released Clear for Mac! The Mac version looks very similar to the iPhone version both in design and size, which is awesome because switching between the two is a seamless as ever. If you're already familiar with Clear for iPhone, Clear for Mac behaves exactly as you would expect. iCloud sync will not only keep your Clear lists in sync between iPhone and Mac, but also keep your unlocked themes stored in the cloud so that they'll be available on all your devices. You can literally just start typing to enter new items and point down a list to add something without having to switch to a mouse or trackpad to click. Some other features added to the iPhone version of Clear include the ability to share your favorite quotes on Twitter and Facebook, quick list switching by swiping from the edges of your iPhone, pasting text as lists, and sending tasks to Clear from other apps such as Launch Center Pro. Classic Karateka game coming to iOS Posted: 07 Nov 2012 08:27 PM PST As any retro gaming aficionado will tell you, Karateka is a classic even among classics. It was built on an Apple II computer by Jordan Mechner and released in 1984. And now it's coming to iOS. The goal is still to save Mariko from the evil Warlord Akuma, but instead of one hero with one life, you now get three heroes with one life each, including the True Love, the Monk, and the Brute. According to Samit Sakar at Polygon:
Art design was by Jeff Matsuda, who designed the Jackie Chan and The Batman cartoons, and worked on comic books at both Image and Marvel. The video above was made by Adam Lisagor, of course. I'm not typically a fan of remakes. It's incredibly hard to improve on the originals, especially the classics, and if not done well you get... most of what's coming out of Hollywood these days. So consider me skeptical unless and until the new Karate proves me wrong. Karateka is available on XBox Live Arcade now for $10, and is coming later this month to Steam and PlayStation Network for $9.99, and iOS for a price to be set later. Source: Polygon |
DC Comics coming soon to iBooks, Kindle, and Nook Posted: 07 Nov 2012 08:09 PM PST DC Comics has just announced a deal to bring their monthly content to Apple's iBooks as well as to the Kindle and Nook online stores. While DC Comics already has offerings in the App Store in the form of graphic novels via their own apps or apps like ComiXology, monthly content hasn't been available in iBooks natively, until now. DC Comics had the following to say in an interview with TechCrunch on the move to digital subscriptions -
DC also stated that digital comic sales climb 197% year after year which explains why it should be a really good move for them. That isn't to say their print series aren't doing well as they saw 12% growth there as well. While DC says print is still where their main focus lies from a storytelling experience standpoint, digital is still important. They plan on releasing digital only comics just as they do print. Anyone excited to be able to have DC Comic subscriptions straight through iBooks with all your other subscriptions or does having another app to consume them not bother you? Source: TechCrunch |
Apple Store iPhone app updated, claims to let you email gift cards [UPDATED] Posted: 07 Nov 2012 07:36 PM PST The Apple Store app for iPhone has been updated and supposedly allows users to buy gift cards and have them emailed to the recipients. We must be blind and clueless, because no one at iMore can actually figure out how to do this. The update notes also claim that these gift cards can be used with Passbook, but the only type of gift cards we can find are for iTunes, the App Store, and the iBookstore; it doesn't make sense to use Passbook for any of these stores. Apple Store gift cards, however, would be awesome with Passbook -- too bad they are nowhere to be found. To find the gift cards that are available, you must manually search for them. There is not a section of the Apple Store app dedicated to gift cards. This is a shame, because many people may not even realize they can buy gift cards with the app. Each gift card can be personalized with a message and mailed to you or the recipient. Again, only mailing physical cards seems to be an option even though Apple claims that you can now email the cards. In addition to the mysterious feature of emailing gift cards and integrating them with Passbook, Siri will now search the Apple Store app for you by finding products and prices. The new Siri feature is pretty cool, but has anyone figured out how to email gift cards? I was excited when I read about emailing gift cards and using Passbook in the update notes, but now I'm just left feeling scammed. What about you? UPDATE: We've found the email-able Apple Store gift cards! You can find them via one of these 4 methods:
You'd think Apple was trying to hide them! As of right now, it appears that only Apple Store gift cards can be emailed, not gift cards for iTunes, the App Store, or the iBookstore. When you receive a gift card, you can add them to Passbook to later have scanned at an Apple Store. Pretty cool! Thanks @Mriley1058 for the tip on where to find them! Free - Download Now |
Rogers, TELUS, and Bell announce new unlimited talk and text plans Posted: 07 Nov 2012 06:16 PM PST If you're doing some shopping for a new rate plan in Canada, Rogers, TELUS, and Bell have now gone ahead and introduced several new unlimited talk and text plans to choose from. Sadly, looking at the plans there is very little difference between them all in terms of pricing and included offerings. In fact, the plans are pretty much identical to each other. Let's take a look at them individually: Rogers:
TELUS:
Bell:
You'll notice TELUS has set their pricing at $5 more than Rogers and Bell. The reason for that is because included in their package is caller ID, voicemail, and unlimited family calling on all the plans. Personally speaking, with the plans offering so very little differences between them I'd be more concerned with who has better coverage and compare their other service offerings before fully deciding. It seems pretty clear they're not competing at the plan level in any sort of way, which makes the decisions even harder for Canadian wireless consumers. AT&T planning large investment to expand LTE network Posted: 07 Nov 2012 02:08 PM PST AT&T will invest $14 billion in the expansion of its LTE network. While AT&T is the second-largest cellular carrier in the US, it lags severely behind rival carrier Verizon in their deployment of LTE. While AT&T managed to sell a record-breaking number of iPhones with the launch of the iPhone 5, customers may decide to drop AT&T in favor of the more-robust Verizon network. The investment will be made over a three-year period, and would cover both wireless and wireline broadband networks. In a statement, AT&T said:
AT&T LTE is currently available in a limited number of cities, though the company plans to cover 250 million people with LTE by the end of 2013. This new plan would cover 300 million people by the end of 2014. With almost every new device, flagship or not, launching with LTE support, the expansion of these networks is critical to the long-term viability of any carrier. With AT&T lagging behind in deployment, investments like these are necessary to remain competative. The growth of AT&T's LTE network will also benefit iPhone users. Currently, the LTE capabilities of the iPhone 5 are not available to most of AT&T's customers. As LTE covers more areas, more customers will be able to take full advantage of the higher speeds, giving customers a better and more complete experience than they currently enjoy. Source: AT&T |
iPad mini Review: The Joy of Being a Lightweight Posted: 07 Nov 2012 02:03 PM PST I've had the new iPad mini for a little more than 5 days now, and I thought it was about time to share my thoughts on the smallest member of the iPad lineup. I went for the 32GB black model. I'm way too much of an apps junkie to try a 16GB model and I am hoping that 32GB on the iPad mini, backed by 64GB on my iPad 3, will be enough. I definitely plan to get a WiFi + Cellular model, but they're not available until later this month – November 23 is the expected release day I've heard for them. By then I'll have figured out whether 32GB is Ok for me and will either stick with it or go the whole hog with a 64GB WiFi + Cellular model – but I'm very confident that 32GB should be fine. So, on to some thoughts on the iPad mini: The Wonderful Lightness I knew of course that the mini was substantially lighter than the (now old) new iPad or iPad 3, and even lighter than the iPad 2. But it is just so wonderfully light. I thought the lighter weight was going to be my favorite feature, but even my high expectations in this area have been far exceeded. As soon as I took mine out of its box in the Apple store I was in love with the weight of it. I've been within the first 10 or so people into the Apple store for every iPad launch and this is the first time I have ever gushed about the iPad to the Apple staff person helping me with the purchase. I think my jaw dropped a little when I held it and I definitely shared my enthusiasm for my new little lightweight pal. How to use Remind me Later to handle inopportune calls on your iPhone Posted: 07 Nov 2012 11:18 AM PST iOS 6 brings some welcome new features to the Phone app, including Remind me Later, which lets you safely avoid answering calls when it's inconvenient without having to worry you'll forget to return them later. As the name implies, Remind me Later ties the Phone app straight into the Reminders app, so it's really quick to use. Like the new, quick text-message replies, Remind me Later is accessible right from the Lock screen, and is only a swipe away. How to set a location based alert with Remind me Later
How to set a time-based alert using Remind me Later
iOS will now set an alarm and when one hour has passed, your alert will go off, reminding you to return the missed call. Do not Disturb modeiOS 6 also comes with a new Do not Disturb mode. If you're in a situation where you don't want to be bothered by calls for an extended period of time, don't want to have to dismiss them all manual, and don't care about being reminded to return them beyond the usual missed call notifications, Do not Disturb can be the better choice. |
Delta: Fly like the 1 percent, compute like a chump with a free low-end MacBook Air Posted: 07 Nov 2012 10:27 AM PST Just got an e-mail from Delta, offering up a free MacBook Air if I buy a Delta Private Jets card for the low, low price of $100,000. You know, "perfect for those who prefer to travel light," Delta says. (Probably with a sherpa.) But you've got to read the fine print, right? Here's where it really gets insulting. You just dropped 100 large on access to private planes. The least Delta could do would be to spring for the good MBA. Instead, you're stuck with 128GB of SSD space. You might be flying like the 1 percent, but you'll computing like a chump. |
Apple fined $368 million for violating VirnetX patents in FaceTime Posted: 07 Nov 2012 10:27 AM PST Apple has been fined $368 million after their video calling feature, FaceTime, was found to infringe on patents owned by a company called VirnetX, a company that provides solutions for secure internet communications. A US court ruled that Apple's FaceTime product infringes on four patents by VirnetX. One of the patents at issue involved the ability to establish a secure communication link. Apple apparently has no option for appeal in this matter. VirnetX has also brought suit against a number of other larger companies over its patent portfolio. Natash Lomas of Techcrunch reports notes:
This is another in a recent string of legal defeats for Apple. Last week Apple was forced to amend a statement that had been ordered by a UK court that aknowledged that Samsung did not copy the iPad. A US judge also recently dismissed Apple's case against Motorola Mobility. The VirnetX case might also shed some light on why FaceTime isn't open. When introduced in 2010, it was said that FaceTime would become an open standard. Many have speculated as to why that was. It may be that Apple found that they could not legally open FaceTime when some of the technology behind it was not industry-standard and under someone else's patents. While it seemed a longshot in the first place, with the VirnetX victory, the hope of an open FaceTime, appears to be gone. Source: Techcrunch |
Notable New iPad Apps: ColorStrokes HD Posted: 07 Nov 2012 09:09 AM PST ColorStrokes HD is a brand color splashing style graphics app for the iPad, released in the iPad App Store today. The app is developed by MacPhun – creators of one of my all-time favorite photo effects apps for the iPad – FX Photo Studio HD, which was one of the picks in our Best iPad Apps of 2011 list. Here are some of the app's key features:

The Darkest Lie: the First Published Novel Written Entirely on an iPad Posted: 07 Nov 2012 07:43 AM PST Here's a big poke in the eye for all those who still claim the iPad is just a 'consumption' device: a novel written entirely on an iPad. It's called 'The Darkest Lie' and its author is Angela Day. Angela was kind enough to email me and let me know about the new book and its Kindle edition yesterday. I have to admit I was initially interested purely because of the written on an iPad angle – but once I read the first paragraph of the Prologue I was hooked by the writing and the story. I got through a couple chapters last night and I'm finding it a very exciting page-turner so far. It's also very hard not to love the backstory for this novel that Angela shared with me:

Microsoft Office once again reportedly coming to iOS, seriously Posted: 07 Nov 2012 07:12 AM PST After countless rumors, Microsoft Office is once again said to be on its way to the iPhone and iPad (and Android). Office for iOS will reportedly consist of separate apps for Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, and will require a Microsoft account to use. The basic Office apps will allow users to view their documents, but an Office 365 subscription will be required for editing. But it's not all good news according to Tom Warren of The Verge:
Despite the lack of advanced functionality, the arrival of Office on iOS will be welcomed by many. Developers have tried to fill this particular gap since the App Store first opened, but there are many customers that have held out for the true Microsoft Office experience. Whether Office for iOS proves to be enough for users, or they look to other apps, we will have to wait and see. Microsoft Office for iOS is said to be arriving in March 2013. Source: The Verge |

Sprint buying $480 million worth of midwestern U.S. Cellular spectrum and customers Posted: 07 Nov 2012 06:19 AM PST Sprint, the perennial #3 carrier in the U.S., has announced their intent to acquire spectrum and customers from regional carrier U.S. Cellular for $480 Million. The deal covers the midwest, and seems focused on Chicago and St. Louis. According to a press statement issued by Sprint CEO, Dan Hesse:
Sprint currently offers Apple's iPhone 5 and will be offering the iPad 4 and iPad mini when the cellular versions of those two devices ship later this month.
The deal still has to be approved by the appropriate regulatory agencies, namely the Department of Justice and the Federal Communications Commission. If the DoJ and FCC don't have any major issues with it, Sprint expects the transaction to close in the summer of 2013. Source: Sprint |
Apple alerting users to reserved iCloud email addresses Posted: 07 Nov 2012 05:59 AM PST Apple has begun sending out emails to inform iCloud users that @icloud.com email addresses have been reserved for them. These seem to be directed towards previous MobileMe users who had @me.com (or legacy @mac.com) addresses. I don't recall email addresses being reserved following the mac.com to me.com transition, and icloud.com, and there's no additional information or context provided. The email simply states:
Whether this has something to do with previous, additional MobileMe aliases or something else, I'm not sure. If you received an iCloud email reservation from Apple, let me know. Thanks: @ichadman |
