Microsoft announces Xbox Music iTunes competitor, coming to PC, Xbox 360, Windows Phone, Android and iOS devices

Microsoft announces Xbox Music iTunes competitor, coming to PC, Xbox 360, Windows Phone, Android and iOS devicesMicrosoft has launched a new music service which it hopes will offer significant competition to Apple's hugely successful iTunes service. The new Microsoft music offering will be called Xbox Music and will debut on its own Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 devices initially but will also be rolled out for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch a well as certain Android devices too; very soon afterwards. The news comes from Gigaom who managed to speak with Jerry Johnson, general manager of Xbox Music.

But the biggest story to me is that Xbox Music will embrace Android and iOS. Jerry Johnson, general manager of Xbox Music, wasn't able to tell me exactly when the apps for those two platforms are going to come out, but the sense that I took away from the briefing was that his team is working on making it happen sooner rather than later. Xbox Music on Android and iOS will look very much like Xbox Music on Windows Phone 8, which itself in many ways follows the style formerly known as Metro.

So why is this big news? Because Microsoft's past attempts of getting into the music space were much more territorial. The company completely reinvented its DRM for Zune Music, making sure that Zune downloads wouldn't play on anyone's hardware but Microsoft's – a move that irked countless hardware partners who had gotten their devices certified for Microsoft's previous music format.

The Xbox Music service will launch initially on Windows 8, Windows Phone 8 and Xbox 360 only and will come in two flavors. The first will be ad-supported and offered as a free service solely for playback on Windows 8 machines. The premium version will cost $10 a month and will be usable on additional platforms such as the Xbox 360 and Windows Phone 8 phones. Microsoft will also offer a digital download store and a paid cloud music storage service which will supposedly offer an iTunes Match type experience too.

There is no doubt that Microsoft has the power to build something to rival iTunes however past attempts have never been that great. The Zune hardware and software was always hindered by its lack of international availability and it remains to be seen if this service will roll out internationally either. It has often been rumored that Apple would roll out some kind of iTunes subscription service but it has never materialized, maybe this could be the thing to give it a push.

Cingleton deux: Day three

Cingleton deux: Day three

The third and final day of the second annual Cingleton Symposium -- Ç deux -- featured the closing keynote and a special double feature...

Dan Moren once again closed out the show, but this time brought Lex Friedman along for the ride. The Macworld staffers elaborated on why Apple getting HUGE sucks for developers, customers, and Apple. But also, why it sucks less than when Apple was small.

Then Guy English, Scott Morrison, and Petra Mueller officially ended the Cingleton party. And kicked off the after party.

John Gruber of Daring Fireball and special guest Brent Simmons of Sepia Labs recorded a special edition of The Talk Show covering Cingleton, Marco Arment's new The Magazine app, and app.net.

Jason Snell, Serenity Caldwell, Dan Moren, and and Lex Friedman assembled for an episode of The Incomparable. The show focused on how Lex had never seen Indiana Jones. And how everyone else had. they broke down the trilogy movie by movie, from Raiders of the Lost Ark to some fourth movie they claimed was in the franchise but, frankly, sounded like they made it up on the spot.

Cingleton duex: Day one

And that was it, except for the memories, knowledge, and community we all shared and we will each take back with us. Until next time.

Videos were all recorded by Thomas Unterberger, so if you missed the event, you'll be able to catch up on the talks. Last year's are available on Vimeo now.

iMore Editors' Choice for October 14, 2012

Posted: 14 Oct 2012 03:49 PM PDT

Every week, the editors at iMore carefully select some of our favorite, most useful, most extraordinary apps, accessories, gadgets, and websites. This week's selections include video player for jailbroken iPads, a classic board game, a lawyer game, and an ADN client.

XBMC for iPad - Chris

One of the things that I really hate about the iPad or any iOS devices is the restrictions placed on video playback formats. The iPad can handle playback of lots of different video formats however Apple will not support them for whatever reason and it drives me mad!

Thankfully if you have a jailbroken device you can take off those Apple hand cuffs and start to unleash the power that the iPad has when it comes to video playback. I store all of my vast collection of TV shows and Movies on my dedicated NAS box which then streams the content around the home over my network. The files are mostly stored in AVI or MKV formats and these are just not Apple friendly formats.

This is where XBMC come into the picture. XBMC is an open source project derived from the original XBOX games console. It is a front end to your media and with a little bit of setting up it can grab meta data for all of your movies and TV shows and present them in a fantastic way. Cover art, movie synopsis etc etc all there on your iPad screen ready for you to peruse and select. Now the best part, when you click on a movie or show, it plays it, no matter if the file is an MKV, AVI or MP4 file or something else, it just works. Streaming from my NAS is a wonderful experience and the one and only reason I will not give up my jailbreak on my iPad.

XBMC is just phenomenal!

If you have a jailbroken iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, you can grab XBMC from Cydia or follow the guide below:-

Ticket to Ride - Leanna Lofte

Ticket to Ride is an oldie but goodie. I've had this game installed on my iPad for a couple years now and went a long time without playing it. It somewhat recently received an update that included a new Legendary Asia Map, so I got hooked again. In the past few weeks, Ticket to Ride has become my goto I-need-a-minute-to-relax game.

For those who are not familiar with the classic strategy board game Ticket to Ride (I wasn't until I purchased the iPad version), the goal is to create paths with your train cars in a way that completes the routes indicated on the cards you collect. Longer, more difficult routes are worth more points and if you collect routes that you don't complete, you loose those points instead. You have to gather train cards in order to place your train cars and compete with other players for routes. It's fun, challenging, strategic, and makes you think.

Devil's Attorney - Simon Sage

Devil's Attorney is a brand new lawyer game that revolves around a skeezy lawyer in the 70s called Max McMann. With twists logic and befuddling charisma, he dismantles lawsuits against shady characters, earns a profit, and decks out his apartment in the gaudiest things you could imagine. The game has a cartoony, colorful art style, and excellent voice acting that fully conveys McMann's sleaze and depravity. The game mechanics are also solid. Every round in the court room, action points are spent on abilities like "Reverse Psychology" to reduce the credibility of evidence, lawyers, and witnesses. Home decor enhances materialism, decadence and vanity scores to unlock new abilities.

Devil's Attorney is a lot of fun, and I guarantee that you'll get at least a few chuckles out of playing it.

Felix - Ally Kazmucha

Last week I chose Netbot as my pick of the week, another ADN client. Even though Netbot is just as good as it's big brother, Tweetbot, I found myself easily confusing the two and forgetting which service I was actually posting to. While Tweetbot is a very good app, I think Netbot should have gotten an interface all its own.

While looking at the best App.net apps for iPhone, I came across Felix. The interface is gorgeous, it's well laid out, and push notifications work great. Netbot is still lacking push service as well. Not only does Felix has just as good of an interface as Netbot but it's got its own identity on my iPhone and I can easily keep the two services separate. Felix has honestly been a breath of fresh air and I actually enjoy using the client, maybe even more than I like Tweetbot.

If you're already on App.net, make sure you check out Felix. You won't regret it.

Your choice?

Now that we've chosen our favorites for the week, we want to hear yours! Did you pick up a killer app, accessory, or game this week? Let us know in the comments below!

Review — Clash of Clans for iPad

Posted: 14 Oct 2012 03:33 PM PDT

Strategy games are not easy — there, I've said it. Games such as Civilization, Starcraft 2, Age of Empires and the like require serious multitasking skills and the ability to judge a situation in various ways. You might think an iPad game couldn't compete with that kind of intense gaming experience. Well, you'd be wrong.

Clash of Clans is a game for the serious player.

Softbank reportedly will purchase a 70 percent stake of Sprint

Posted: 14 Oct 2012 03:23 PM PDT

Following up on previous reports of talks between Japan's Softbank and Sprint, numerous reports are now suggesting that Softbank will take on a 70 percent stake in Sprint.

Although nothing official has been laid down by either company at this point, CNBC and Business Insider are both reporting the deal will officially be announced as of Monday.

When it comes to the terms of the agreement, it's been suggested the deal will cost Softbank $20 billion -- $8 billion in shares directly from Sprint, and a $12 billion offer to buy shares from the public.

Overall, the deal is interesting and should buy Sprint some time to roll out their LTE network on a grander scale though it remains unknown what, exactly the deal will mean in the long-term for either company.

iPad Basics: How to Change the Apple ID on the iPad

Posted: 14 Oct 2012 10:17 AM PDT

iPad Store Settings

An Apple ID is used on the iPad, and all iOS devices, to sign in to all the built-in stores – the App Store, iTunes, and the iBookstore. You need an Apple ID in order to download and install apps, songs, movies, and books on the iPad.

One of the most common questions I see on iPad discussion forums is how to change the Apple ID on the iPad. It's a very easy thing to do. Here's how:

– Open the Settings app

– Scroll down the sections in the left sidebar and tap on 'iTunes & App Stores' (if you are running an older version of the iPad operating system than the current iOS 6, then this section will  just be labeled Store).
