iPad mini has advanced software to detect unintended touches around the screens bezel

Posted: 24 Oct 2012 12:42 AM PDT

iPad mini has advanced software to detect unintended touches around the screens bezelApple officially announced the iPad mini at its special media event yesterday and one of the things that stands out on the iPad mini is the thinness of the bezel surrounding the screen. if you compare the new iPad with the iPad mini, you can see in portrait mode that the bezel on the left and right hand side is much slimmer on the iPad mini. One of the problems with a thin bezel is that it makes holding the device much harder without actually touching the screen and inadvertently interacting with the software on the touch screen. Thankfully Apple has taken care of the problem with some advanced software.

iPad mini is small. But when you use it, it doesn't feel small. That's because it's designed to give you the maximum amount of screen in the minimum amount of space. To achieve that, we had to rethink the relationship between the screen and the overall shape of the product. iPad has symmetrical bezels around all of its edges. But for iPad mini, we reduced the width of the bezels on two sides of the display. So although the screen is smaller, it's even more prominent. Rethinking the screen meant we also had to rethink the software behind it. iPad mini intelligently recognizes whether your thumb is simply resting on the display or whether you're intentionally interacting with it. It's the kind of detail you'll notice — by not noticing it. And it's a great example of how Apple hardware and software work together to give you the best experience possible.

So according to Apple, you don't need to worry about inadvertently touching the screen when you're holding the iPad mini. We will be interested to see how good the software is in real world situations but Apple appears confident enough to make us aware that it exists so we wouldn't be surprised if it works exactly as intended.

Weekly Photo Contest: Lens Flare!

It's time to announce this week's photo contest -- lens flare! With all the hype surrounding purple flare on the iPhone 5, we figured it'd be fun to have a photo contest dedicated to lens flare. The winning entry will not necessarily contain purple lens flare, however, so don't consider this a requirement. Just get creative with lens flare and if purple flare adds to the creativity, then by all means, try to include it!

Congrats to jamesdaly for winning last week's Instagram photo contest!

The prize: $30 iTunes gift certificate

In addition to a thumbs up from the iMore crew and all of us yelling about how great of a photo star you are, the winner of this week's photography contest will receive a $30 iTunes gift card allowing you to stock up on some of those photography apps you've been dying to buy!

The rules

The rules of entry are very simple. The photo must have been taken with an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch (we'll check the EXIF data of the original file to verify) and any edits must have been done with an iPhone or iPad app. No Photoshop CS6! If you have external lens accessories you are more than welcome to use them. You can submit as many photos as you'd like, but remember, this is a contest, so make sure you submit your best work!

Resources

Now, before you run off to take your photo, remember that it's not technical skill alone that will claim this prize. Even if you're not the best photographer (yet!), a great eye and a great subject can still get you the win.

However, a little help can never hurt, so make sure you check out our iPhone photography series for some tips.

How to submit

Submitting your photos is easy. just head over to the iMore Photography Forum and post your photos to the official contest thread. Don't forget to state which apps, if any, you used to edit your photo!

That's it! Now go out and shoot!

Sonic Jump by SEGA for iPhone and iPad review

Posted: 23 Oct 2012 11:05 PM PDT

Sonic Jump for iPhone and iPad is, in a nutshell, SEGA's version of the popular platform jumper Doodle Jump that features SEGA's iconic character Sonic the Hedgehog. There are two games modes, Story and Arcade, where you must jump and tilt your way up the levels collecting coins, defeating enemies, gaining abilities, and battleing Dr. Eggman.

Sonic Jump features two games modes: Story and Arcade. In Story Mode, you progress through different levels by jumping your way to the top. When you complete all the levels in a zone, you must defeat Dr. Eggman in a special boss level. In Arcade Mode, you simply try to get as high as you can without dying.

The first zone is fairly easy and doesn't include very many obsticals which is great for beginners because it helps you learn the controls and stategies for the game. For those who are "naturals" at this type of game, you may not find it very challenging, but just stick with it, because it gets a lot harder in the other zones. When you complete a level, you will be given a score based on your time, how many enemies you defeated, how many stars and rings you collected, and the number of power-ups you gained. If you die, you will be given a random tip on the screen that lets you start over.

The controls for Sonic Jump are very simple -- tilt your iPhone or iPad from side to side to move left and right and tap the screen to do a double-jump. I will admit that playing Sonic Jump is a little awkward on an iPad because of it's size, but I'm sure the iPad mini will be a great device for playing Sonic Jump.

Each level will feature various obsticals including enemies, moving platforms, breakable ledges, spikes, and more. To defeat an enemy, you must attack it from underneath (which is a bit counterinteritive when the enemy is a bee). If you make contact with something that causes damage, like spikes or an enemy by falling on it, then you will lose all your rings. If you don't have any rings to lose, then you die. You also die if you fall off the screen, as once your field of view goes up, there's no coming back down.

Other items you will encounter in Sonic Jump are chests that release a special power. These abilities include magnatism to help gather more rings, a protective bubble, a special ring that turns any enemy you get close to into rings, and more. If you jump on a safe, it'll deposit all your rings so that you can be sure that you won't lose them.

As you play the Sonic Jump, you are given various missions to complete that help you "level up". These missions are similar to those found in the popular arcade game Jetpack Joyride [Free - App Store link]. For example, a few of the available missions include wrapping around the screen 8 times in a Story Act, jumping on one platform 10 times, making 180 jumps, and collecting 500 rings. Some of the missions require skill, and some are just silly. At levels 17 and 20, you will be able to play as Tail and Knuckles, respectively.

As with nearly every arcade game these days, there is a store included with Sonic Jump. From here you can buy power-ups with rings that you've collected, or if you want to purchase rings with real money, you can do that too.

The good

  • Fun and addicting
  • Includes Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles (Tails and Knuckles get unlocked at levels 17 and 20)
  • Arcade and Story modes
  • 36 levels in Story mode
  • Boss levels against Dr. Eggman
  • Unlock power ups and more with rings
  • Purchase more rings as in-app purhcases
  • Universal for iPhone and iPad

The bad

  • Progress does not sync between devices

The bottom line

If you're a fan of Doodle Jump and of Sonic the Hedgehog, then you'll enjoy Sonic Jump. It's fun, addicting, challenging, and a bit nostaligic.

Apple adds iPad mini Smart Cover video to YouTube

Posted: 23 Oct 2012 06:34 PM PDT

Apple has added a short promo video for the iPad mini Smart Cover to their YouTube account. It's 36 seconds in length, features fun piano music and focuses on how it magnetically attached to the iPad and the wide selection of colors: pink, green, blue, light gray, dark gray and (PRODUCT) RED. The focus on the colors is done to the beat of the song and includes some cute tie-ins by making the Smart Covers look like piano keys and fingers tapping on the iPad mini to the beat as if playing a piano.

iPad 4 vs. Kindle Fire 8 HD vs. Nexus 7 vs. Surface RT vs. PlayBook: Spec shootout!

Posted: 23 Oct 2012 05:18 PM PDT

iPad 4 vs. Kindle Fire 8 HD vs. Nexus 7 vs. Surface RT vs. PlayBook: Spec shootout!

Apple not only released the iPad mini but also a brand new iPad 4 to sit on top of the tablet food chain. It's got the new Apple A6X processor, the new Qualcomm international LTE radio, and the new Lightning connector.

Does that chance the comparison much when it comes to the competition? Absolutely but not entirely. Google is rumored to be introducing a new Nexus 10 (made by Samsung, no less) as soon as next week. That's make for a much better comparison than the only current Nexus tablet, which is more in between an iPod touch and iPad mini in size and focus. Amazon has also just released the Kindle Fire 8 HD which now includes cellular data as an option -- though it won't be available in many countries regardless.

Microsoft's Surface RT is a wildcard here. Microsoft calls it no-compromises but that just means they punted the decision making to me, the consumer. I'm taking a wait and see attitude. It could be as great as the Xbox, or as doomed as the Zune. There's just no way to tell until it's been out for a while and the use case becomes clearer.

Likewise, while there have been rumors of a larger BlackBerry PlayBook for a while now, RIM is wisely concentrating on getting BB10 out the door, so I doubt we'll see it for a while. That leaves the 7-inch PlayBook at their only entrant in the tablet space, but you can find them for $149 and at that price, if you don't have a couple hundred dollars more, it's quite the value.

Still, Apple has sold 100,000,000 iPads to date, and that's an incredible amount for a product that launched in March of 2010. What they'll do next is a big question, but the iPad 4 is a better iPad, again, and anyone who wants to unseat it has their work cut out for them.

iBooks 3.0 brings iCloud sync, vertical scrolling, and more

Posted: 23 Oct 2012 05:39 PM PDT

Just as promised during today's iPad mini event, Apple has released the new version of iBooks with better iCloud integration, enhanced sharing options, continuous scrolling, and more.

With iBooks 3.0, now you can see all your iBookstore purchases in iCloud in a new Collection called Purchased Books. Another great new feature of iBooks is the new Scroll theme; it allows you to scroll vertically through your books as you read.

iBooks 3.0 also allows you receive free updates to your purchased books including new chapters and corrections and the ability to look up definitions for words in German, Spanish, French, Japanese and Simplified Chinese. For the social types, you can also share quotes or thoughts about your books with friends on Facebook, Twitter, Messages, or Mail.

So what do you think of the new iBooks? My favorite new feature is vertical scrolling. What about you?

Apple adds 'Introducing iPad mini' video to YouTube

Posted: 23 Oct 2012 06:26 PM PDT

Apple has added the iPad mini promo video that was shown during today's announcement to their official YouTube channel. In this video, Jony Ive describes the goals and design process behind the iPad mini and why 7.9" is the perfect size (and he of course says "aluminum" at some point!), Michael Tchao talks about why "mini" is great and some of the iPad mini's specs, Dan Ricco explains how to get all the same feature of the iPad into the smaller iPad mini, and more.

iPad mini vs. Kindle Fire 7 HD vs. Nexus 7 vs. Surface RT vs. PlayBook: Spec shootout!

Posted: 23 Oct 2012 03:29 PM PDT

Apple has just announced the iPad mini and that means they've fully entered the small tablet space. Priced starting at $329, however, they didn't obliterate it as some (including yours truly) thought they would. There's now plenty of room under Apple's umbrella for competitors to compete on price.

Right off the bat we have the new Amazon Kindle Fire 7 HD, which while more media appliance than tablet, and only available in a handful of countries, is still hugely competitive in that space and in those places.

The Nexus 7, which is transitioning from 8G/16GB to 32GB and likely getting cellular is cheaper, but runs more smartphone apps than tablet apps. Still, if that's all you need or care about, it's the best bigger iPod touch on the market right now.

Microsoft's Surface for Windows RT isn't really a small tablet but since no small Windows 8 tablets have been announced yet, we're including it here as well. Microsoft's messaging is still confusing and poorly articulated, however, so I'm waiting to see how it holds up and makes sense in the real world.

RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook, one of the original 7-inch tablets, is still one of the most interesting. It's reportedly going to be upgraded to BlackBerry 10 next year, and if you look around you can find them for as little as $149. That's a pretty good value proposition if you really don't want an iPad mini.

Apple has already sold over 100,000,00 of the 9.7-inch iPads. No one has really cracked the small tablet market though. Will the iPad mini be the first successful, mass market, small form-factor tablet, or did Apple leave enough of a price gap underneath it for a next-generation Nexus 7 or more widely marketed Amazon Kindle Fire to steal ground?

Zynga lays off employees in midst of Apple event

Posted: 23 Oct 2012 03:36 PM PDT

Zynga, in an obvious attempt to avoid bad press, laid off some 100-odd employees during Apple's iPad mini event today. A total of 5% of their full-time staff are on the way out, and many were given two hours to clear out of the office today according to inside sources. The Boston studio is shutting down completely, while the Austin studio will see significant reductions. The Japan and UK studios are on the chopping block for closure. 13 games will be shut down, with a significant reduction in investment in The Ville due to dwindling performance. Though the vast majority of these games are on Facebook, there is a fair bit of overlap on iOS. Zynga's downward spiral doesn't bode particularly well for the titles it will be maintaining on mobile.

It seems awfully skeezy to try to bury this news under all of the iPad mini noise, though if Zynga's going through a rough patch already, one could understand why they would want to minimize the publicity. Some of Zynga's more popular iOS titles include Words with Friends, Horn, Draw Something, Poker, Drop7, and FarmVille. How many Zynga games do you play? Would you be heartbroken if they were taken off the App Store?

iBooks Author 2.0 available in Mac App Store

Posted: 23 Oct 2012 03:00 PM PDT

iBooks Author 2.0 available in Mac App Store

iBooks Author, Apple book creation app for Mac, has gone 2.0 and is now available in the Mac App Store. It includes the ability to make portrait-only books, embed custom fonts, and more. As the resident math nerd, the most exciting new feature to me is support for creating mathematic expressions with LaTeX and MathML.

  • Create new gorgeous portrait-only books
  • Embed custom fonts into books for complete control over text appearance
  • Add even more interactivity with new Scrolling Sidebar and Pop-Over widgets
  • Support for mathematical expressions with new native equation editing using both LaTeX and MathML notation
  • Automatic optimization of media for iPad
  • Improved support for embedded audio, including the ability to play an audio file by tapping an image
  • Improved publishing workflow, including automatic sample book creation and pre-publish checking
  • Additional Apple-designed templates
  • Version numbering for books
  • Enhanced to take advantage of the Retina display on the new MacBook Pro
  • Performance improvements
  • Usability improvements

Have any of you written a book with iBooks Author, yet? Are you planning to? I started a math study guide a long time ago and never finished partly because of how tedious it was to add equations, but now that iBooks Author supports LaTeX, I just may finish that project soon rather than later!

LTE-enabled iPad mini and fourth-gen iPad will come to Sprint

Posted: 23 Oct 2012 02:19 PM PDT

iPad mini and fourth-gen iPad will come to Sprint

When the cellular iPad mini and 4th-generation iPad launch next month, Sprint will find itself standing next to Verizon and AT&T in offering iPads for use on their LTE network. With the launch of the 3rd-generation iPad in March of this year, Sprint was left out when LTE compatibility was announced. Sprint confirmed iPad mini and fourth-gen availability in a press release today: "Sprint (NYSE: S) today announced that in the coming weeks it will offer iPad mini and fourth generation iPad. Sprint will offer these new iPads with a range of attractive data plans that will allow customers to connect to its 4G LTE network."

Sprint and Verizon will share models of both devices that run on either carrier's CDMA and LTE networks. AT&T will have a separate GSM and LTE model. Both the CDMA and GSM models will support international 3G and LTE bands, meaning that the Sprint and Verizon iPads will still be compatible with cellular networks when traveling abroad. The price for the cellular models of iPad mini start at $459 for the 16GB model, moving up to $559 and $659 for the 32GB and 64GB models, respectively. For the 4th generation iPad, the cellular models start at $629 for the 16GB cellular model, with the 32GB costing $729, and the 64GB priced at $829. The cellular models of both the iPad mini and the 4th-generation iPad will launch mid-November.

Any takers? Which carrier are you siding with?

Swell Apple Store manager extends return period for remorseful iPad third-gen buyers

Posted: 23 Oct 2012 02:00 PM PDT

One San Francisco Apple store has extended the return period from 14 days to 30 days for those that are kicking themselves for buying a third-generation iPad so close to Apple's announcement of the iPad 4. Apparently this policy change is on a store-by-store basis however, so don't get your hopes up too high for some Apple-wide policy change for the launch of the new iPad. The Stockton Street Apple Store manager also said that the usual 14-day return stretch would stay in place if there was significant wear and tear, but seriously, how badly could you bang up an iPad 3 in under a month?

I checked in with a few Apple stores in my area. In Ottawa, it didn't sound like they were budging on the two-week return period, while the Toronto store said that they're flexible about this kind of thing at launch time, though they have made any solid changes just yet. If you do end up calling your local Apple Store, leave a comment and let us know what's up. Any third-gen iPad owners in this boat? Would you otherwise go out of your way to upgrade, or are the differences with the last iPad too slight?

iPad Mini Release Times: Pre-orders from 10/26, Launch on November 2

Posted: 23 Oct 2012 01:57 PM PDT

iPad MIni Release 11_2

Along with its unveiling of the iPad Mini today, Apple announced details for when the smaller iPad will be available to purchase. The important points and dates to note if you're in the market for an iPad Mini are these:

– Pre-orders start on October 26. Generally with big Apple releases this means that pre-orders will begin at midnight Pacific time on that date – and if this new smaller iPad proves anywhere near as popular as previous models you can expect Apple's online servers to be slammed and pre-orders to sell out relatively quickly.

– The iPad Mini launch day, when it will be available to buy at Apple stores and other approved outlets, is November 2 – for the iPad Mini WiFi models. November 2 is the release day in 34 countries: the US, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK.

– The iPad Mini WiFi + cellular models are expected to be released around two weeks later.

– The base level 16GB WiFi only iPad Mini is priced at $329. Models go up $100 for each doubling up of storage capacity (so $429 for the 32GB WiFi only for example) and $130 for the addition of cellular capability. See my earlier post for full iPad Mini pricing details.

Crazy iPad Numbers from Today’s Apple Event

Posted: 23 Oct 2012 01:10 PM PDT

iPad and PC sales

As always, during their iPad Mini special event today Apple shared a lot of impressive numbers surrounding their iOS and Mac products. Among those were some crazy numbers for the iPad mentioned by Apple CEO Tim Cook, some I've seen before and some that are new today.

Here are the big iPad numbers that caught my eye during the Apple event:

– There are now some 275,000 apps designed specifically for the iPad.

– Two weeks ago Apple sold their 100 millionth iPad, after just two and a half years and in a brand new product category.

– 94% of the Fortune 500 are deploying or testing iPads.

– iPad accounts for a ridiculous 91% of tablet web browsing share.

– iBooks textbooks are now available for 80% of the US high school core curriculum and in over 2,500 schools in the US.

Cook finished off his talk on iPad numbers by saying "We're just getting started" and "We're not taking our foot off the gas". Here's to even crazier iPad numbers soon then. :)

Apple’s new iPad Family shows they’re “just getting started”

Posted: 23 Oct 2012 01:56 PM PDT

After almost every Apple keynote I like to step back, try to see the big picture and get my bearings on where Apple is positioning itself and its products. A way to review things we saw that were surprising as opposed to things that were expected. Here are my first impressions of the Apple media event, which was already dubbed "iPad mini Launch" event by many in the tech press, but which surprised in the diversity of its additional announcements and thus turned out to be more significant, in my view.(...)
